Sobieski at Vienna 1683 / Odsiecz Wiedeńska 1683

"Bóg i Pan nasz na wieki błogosławiony dał zwycięstwo i sławę narodowi naszemu, o jakiej wieki przeszłe nigdy nie słyszały" - Jan III Sobieski.
Vienna was a strong fortress, but by the end of August 1683, the city was in mortal danger of collapsing to the Turkish attack. Food and ammunition were inadequate, The Ottoman siege cut virtually every means of food supply into Vienna, and the garrison and civilian volunteers suffered extreme casualties. Fatigue became such a problem that Ernst Rüdiger Graf von Starhemberg ordered any soldier found asleep on watch to be shot.
The siege by the Islamic Turks of the Christian city of Vienna in 1683 was a watershed incident in European history. Had the Turks been successful, there well might have been no Christian Europe to dominate the world stage for the next 300 years. Facing that magnitude of threat, European powers that were normally jealous and hostile to one another suppressed their mutual antagonisms to defeat the armies of Islam and their brutal Tartar Allies.
Before he set out, Sobieski had sent a letter to Innocent XI, in which he wrote: "When the good of the Church and Christianity is concerned I shed my blood to the last drop, together with the whole kingdom. Since my kingdom and I are two bulwarks of Christianity".
Sobieski said that his purpose for going to Vienna was "to proceed to the Holy War, and with God's help to give back the old freedom to besieged Vienna, and thereby help wavering Christendom."
Duke Charles, an outstanding commander, wrote about Sobieski that "his very presence means as much as the arrival of the whole army".
In the Battle of Vienna, the Turks lost about 25,000 men (plus another 40,000 at The Battle of Parkany that followed). These 65,000 soldiers constituted the cream of the Turkish cavalry on the field, while the allies lost less then 4000 killed and wounded.
For Poland-Lithuania, this was her last great moment on center-stage when she saved Europe from Islam.
The loot that fell into the hands of the Holy League troops and the Viennese was as huge as their relief, as King Sobieski vividly described in a letter to his wife a few days after the battle: "Ours are treasures unheard of ... tents, sheep, cattle and no small number of camels ... it is victory as nobody ever knew of, the enemy now completely ruined, everything lost for them. They must run for their sheer lives ... Commander Starhemberg hugged and kissed me and called me his savior."
Upon entering the abandonded Turkish tents, they found bags of beans - coffee beans revealing how Turks could fight day and night. Shortly thereafter, Polish General Kulczycki opened one of Viennas first coffeehouses and coffee quickly spread across Europe.
After the Battle Jan Sobieski entered Vienna in glory. The King and his Polish army had won lots of fame after their victory. Jan Sobieski III was not only looked upon as the savior of Vienna, but as a savior of the whole Europe from the Ottoman Turks.
The Holy League, created by several Christian states to fight the common Turkish enemy, is an example of how the European powers formed alliances when common traditions and values were at stake; some have commented that the situation was similar to the Crusades, but on this occasion, the "Crusade" was taking place in the very heart of Europe.
To commemorate Sobieskis victory Pope Innocent XI announced 12 September the day of glory of the Holy Name of Mary and to show his admiration for the Poles and their king the Pope accepted the sign of the Crowned Eagle into his papal coat of arms.
However, the victory over the Turks and the rescue of the Habsburgs did not bring Poland-Lithuania any advantages. The Commonwealth did not regain Kamieniec, the region of Podolia and the right-bank Ukraine (they returned to Poland after 16 year old war with Turkey). Yet, Austria was strengthened and it was one of Poland-Lithuania invaders in the 18th century. However, Sobieski could not foresee that. The posterity always remembered him with gratitude. King Jan III Sobieski has been rightly associated with the greatness of the former Commonwealth and as a defender of Christianity and vanquisher of the Turks.

Turks only respect to true enemies and true allies. By the way Poland were our true enemy. But now I think we are strong allies because of our brave histories. Like everybody said that Ottoman Empire didn't accept partition of Poland. Also victims of war came to Istanbul and founded Polonezkoy/Adampol. So this village still alive and it shows that our relations never broken. I hope it goes on...
Long live Polish and Turkish nations!

In the UK people are only just waking up to the reality of what Islam really represents. Pure evil! Despite the political pandering to Islamism by our Government and the bias of the media which they control !
Caused by the communists and their friends, the half educated liberal progressives with their stupid dreams of a 'fluffy bunny' Utopia! And others, the neo-Nazis, who see them as 'allies' in their shared agenda for world domination. Well totalitarianism of one sort or another never solved any problems!
I read the Qu'ran and it was so obvious to me that it is a political doctrine disguised as a Religion.
When I first spoke the truth I was called a 'racist' or an' Islamophobe' but people are less critical now.
We can start by closing our borders to Muslims altogether whatever the EU unelected 'Parliament' has to say about it, They don't represent the wishes of, or care for the protection of any of us and their 'Tower of Babel' is destined to crumble in any case.
I remain optimistic that we will defeat them together with the help of the Almighty!

At least Ottoman Empire/Turkey respected Poles and after Battle of Vienna we became very good friends. In 2014 there was 600 anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties between Lechistan and Ottoman Empire. And it is said that there are not known longer undisturbed ties between two countries. What is more, Ottoman Empire never recognized partitions of Poland, they kept place for polish ambassador through 125 years of polish slavery, and during audiences of diplomats from different countries, sultans was asking "where is ambassador of Lechistan?", and he was getting the reply that "ambassador of Lechistan will be late due to tough road conditions". And Turks were seeing Poles as superior to e. g. people of Prussia. Turks gave Poles shelter when they were running from Poland from prosecutions of Russia and Prussia. There is polish village called Adampol or Polonezkoy, where today 1/3 of inhabitants are polish speaking Poles. And during WWII, when Germany invaded Poland and their ambassador claimed the right to take polish embassy building, government of Turkey denied him by saying that they are our friends and will not do what Germans want. So Germans had to watch polish flag just outside their embassy windows. There are few more examples of this friendship, like Poland being first country to recognize Turkey as republic. So if i had to say who was always our ally, i would say Turkey. And Turks are not arabs, even their language is totally different.

Noshit Sherlock Turkey and Denmark were the only ones to not accept the partition of Poland respect to them... can I ask where does the word Lechistan come from in your language? I have been learning about Slavic people and where Poland came from before it was Poland it originated from groups of Slavic people the main two groups were named Polanie and Lechici (Lechy) Hungary is the oldest friend of Poland even in their language they call us Lengyel I also heard Lachy Lenku

People don't understand that for the Ottoman Sultan, this wasn't a war of religion, it was a war of expanding territories for the empire. The sultan and the Christian kings of Europe portrayed it as a religious holy war in order to attract large numbers of devout soldiers, but they knew it wasn't a war of religion (at the very least that wasn't the main goal). That is why these nations always change alliances even make alliances with the Muslim Turks if it was in the benefit of their empires.

As I heard, most of Poles think that "Turks are Arabs" But it's completely wrong. We didn't relate with Arabs. Even, we don't like Arabs and they betrayed us in WW1. However I must accept that Ottoman traditions and culture influenced by Arab's.

Polish assistance for Vienna in 1683 was a last crusade in Europe. Polish army through whole XVII century was fought with Turkey and Tatars, who attacked southern borders of Rzeczpospolita. When we won last war, Turkey was directed on west of Europe. But when Sobieski has overcome them under Vienna, Turkey has ended expansion in Europe forever.

Król polski powinien współpracować z Turcja i Francja. Turcja zajmuje południową wschodnia Europe z Wiedniem. Prusy nic nie znaczą i zostają przyłączone do Polski. Francja zajmuje zachodnia Europe.

    PIEKNE!!
My surname Sobanski comes from the Slavic personal name Sobeslaw, meaning "usurp glory." it is one of the spelling variations of Sobieski.
I was born in July by Ceasarian on the 16th which is around the time the Polish National Anthem was written in Italy where my father was born.
I have dreams of saving Europe on a white horse, I hope one day I can help Europe be Europe again.

My mieliśmy ważniejszy problem.

I'm polish and I take great pride in it. I'm proud that my country had such a decisive victory in Vienna, however I'm also thankful it happened. I found out from my grandpa that one turkish soldier taken prisoner to Poland fell in love with a polish girl. She agreed to marry him under the condition he converts to christianity. He agreed. This man, a turk, married a polish catholic girl. This man was an ancestor of mine. If it wasn't for this battle I probably would never have been born.

Clothes hussars looks like little poorly... In this movie:)
In this time period in Poland, nobles were doing this for the splendor.
They weren't doing this for the money, because to be a hussar, the guy would be really rich.
When he's going to the war,he has to provide the food for everybody in this camp around fifty people are working for him.
In this time period, all the buttons were golden or some had diamonds.
The story goers , when the nobles went to the tavern for drink most of the time they don't carry money, they just ripp off the buttons and throw it to the guy.
,, here is for whatever we drank ''
    About famous hussars horse:
,, However, it was not only the physical characteristics of these steeds that determined their combat value and usefulness on the battlefield. They could become Hussar mounts only after undergoing many years of arduous training. The training was such that the animal was allowed to enter a narrow track, at each end of which there was a small circle. Horses have been trained for years to run along this path at maximum speed, spinning around its axis at the end of it. Thanks to this, during the battle, they could turn back immediately, almost standing still. More than once they have saved their master's life in this way.
All this made Hussar horses extremely expensive, as they could even cost the equivalent of over 65 kilograms of silver! If we were looking for an analogy in the present day, it can be compared to the new Lamborghini. Let's imagine that every hussar had to have at least two or three mounts. This was due to their high mortality during the battle, as well as marches and related diseases and lack of forage. Well, as the classic used to say, you need three things to wage war: money, money, and more money.
It is not surprising then that horses that could serve the hussars and other cavalry units were treated as special war material. The state itself was interested in them. From the times of the last Jagiellons, there was an embargo on the export of our horses abroad. Whoever broke them, threatening the security of the Republic of Poland, even faced the death penalty .
