It's because the prison system is about making money and they are mostly privately owned down south. It's all about making money. They aren't paying people enough to really care.

A sheriff in a neighboring county stated that there are no requirements to be a corrections officer in Alabama. The only training is provided on the job. The pay is also low, even if compared to other jobs that require a pulse and the ability to fog a mirror.

No, he did not do his job, Vicky and the rest of the officers are not his 'family' they are people who are hired to do a job, he didn't do his, and I doubt they did theirs, because it is highly likely they were aware of what Vicky was doing with her 'husand' and nobody 'nipped it in the bud'. My mother had a Family Physcian who could be rude abrasive, and gruff, however he was an excellent clinician. She did not go to him for his social skills, or lack there of. That had nothing to do with it. He did his job exceedingly well, to her that was what mattered. Likewise, the Sheriff, may have been a kindly soul, but that has nothing to do with doing his job properly. He could easily have chosen to be both kind and do his job, but that was not what he chose. So, don't make excuses for him.
He needs to retire, get some teeth, and enjoy the rest of his days, and allow someone else to fill his boots! Hopefully, someone who is properly trained instead of being a 'wet rag' when it comes to interacting with staff, and who is capable of taking on leadership responsibilies. Being a Sheriff is not the same as being Manager of a Social Club. I would go so far as to say the job descriptions are at best totally different from each other, nice guy or not! Peoples' lives are on the line here. Either do the job as it needs to be done, or make way for someone who can. Enveloping oneself in superflous emotional fluff benefits nobody, if it did, this never would have been allowed to happen.

This is so sad to me, such a tragedy. What Vicki White did was so wrong, but she was a very vulnerable person( alone, divorced/widowed, no kids, work aholic like the sheriff said) I think she was a victim- working in a very difficult environment, manipulated by a very dangerous person. I’m sure as time goes on, we will learn more, but this whole thing troubles me. I think she was in trouble emotionally , and no one seemed to be aware of that.

We all have our challenges in this life, some far more difficult than others. That does not mean we lose our moral compass. When strength of character is eroded it leads to all sorts of problems, some as in Vicky's case, sadly cannot be reversed. Regardless of what she was missing in life. At some point made a conscious decision when she chose to go too far down the wrong path. Albeit, it is true, none of us is perfect and we all make mistakes, most of us have the ability to 'draw the line.' Vicky, obviously did not, either, because she could not, or would not, the end result was the same.

Who cares about Vicky White's angelic record. That sheriff's department was negligent for several reasons. 1. He admitted, on national television, that policy required two officers to escort inmates to court. Yet, he allowed Vicky to have free rein. 2. He's also stated that their center was a "small family." Since they were a small group, they all knew Vicky had done special favors for Casey White as in "extra food."
    3. And, they knew that those two "had a relationship for two years."
Knowing that it was a violation of policy, that sheriff and his crew allowed it to go on.
Good luck with that one Sheriff!

I don't believe that the Sheriff "let" VW break the rules. He trusted her. VW was 2nd in command at the DC. Any rules that were broken by VW are on her. What I am curious about is how often did she leave with an inmate wherein she didn't have an additional person with her? Did she do it because she felt she was better than everyone or did she do it to start a pattern? So that when VW left with CW, no one would question her leaving by herself? She certainly didn't have an qualms not being truthful to her mother, family, co-workers and especially the Sheriff. In the beginning, I had wondered about whether she had a personal vehicle or did she always drive the squad car. Turns out she did have a personal vehicle. I'm not sure where she had it parked as she call her BFF from the DC to come pick her up the morning of the escape. She told her BFF that she had locked her keys in the vehicle. So she didn't have a problem using her BFF to drive her to the DC so she had access to her squad car. While the BFF didn't do anything wrong and wasn't involved in VW's escape plans, this BFF is still officially part of the investigation because of the timeline of the morning. I would love for someone to do an in depth interview with the ex-employee that VW had previously fired. While he may have an ax to grind, I do feel he has pertinent information to help with the VW case.
Like the Sheriff said, procedures are in place. If the people you trust aren't following the rules, then what happened will happen. I do feel that procedures still need to be looked at and improved where needed. IMO, the Sheriff will retire, but his career will always have this blemish attached to it along with the fact that CW also had a failed attempt from the same DC. Did VW assist in any way that time in regards to the makeshift weapon that was found? No matter how other people sugar coat the situation and say VW was conned by an inmate, she knew what she was doing was wrong and she did it anyway. VW was totally on board whether she was conned or not. I'm sorry that she took her own life as everyone deserved answers. While I've heard that VW's family blames all of this on CW, I hope for their sake they look at the entire situation and come to terms with VW's committed involvement. VW was guilty as charged and she was responsible for putting co-workers and innocent people in danger.

You will literally run into John Paul White (The Civil Wars) at the coffee shop downtown and occasionally Jason Isbell and even Steven Tyler from Aerosmith (he doesn’t live here, but is here fairly often). It’s no big deal because we’re all used to it. Everyone knows everyone, and very few in the community will blame Rick Singleton for what happened at the end of the day. If the whole department knew of this infatuation between Vicky and Casey which seems logical then how could the Sheriff not act properly as a good administrator and do his job. The calls from Vicky to Casey at the state prison and Casey calling Vicky from prison needed to have been flagged. The Sheriff did not talk to her explaining the phone calls are not going to happen and she will be fired if she does not follow policy. When you are in the teacher ed program in college ethical boundaries are made clear by the professors and it is made clear teachers and students do not hang out ie date. In this case, since the Sheriff was made aware of this emotional affair it was his job to step up and deal with it by making boundaries clear with his employee, Vicky. This is stating the obvious and commonsense. A good administrator would have nipped this emotional affair in the bud asap.

Casey White told investigators that he & Vicky were prepared to die by a shootout with police. They had 4 handguns & a AR-15 with several rounds of ammo for all the guns in their car. I was rooting for them a little at first, as long as they didn’t hurt anyone & if it was for love. It was wrong but I kinda get it.
When the sheriff in Indiana told everyone what their plan was when caught & showed us all the firearms they had. I’m sorry this is gonna sound harsh, but anybody that prepares to shoot at to injure & kill law enforcement or any person for that matter is a P.O.S.!! That’s like Vicky shooting to kill her own people. I mean WTF? Good riddance to both of them! Sorry not sorry!

He is a wonderful human being and a wonderful sheriff. Never met him but looking at the news surrounding him, I could tell he is. And he trusted Vicky. If only if he would have figured out that Vicky and Casey were romantically involved and were thinking about the life together, he would have given her some advice about how to go about it. I have a feeling that while he would have accepted her retirement papers, he would have supported their relationship as long as him getting out of prison was done legally with lawyers showing that he didn't killed Connie. Now he's spending time in prison for the crimes he did commit as far as killing a dog, injuring a few people and robbing people, I believe he would have, for good behavior, either been paroled or had his current sentence reduced. 75 years in prison may seem to be right for the combination of crimes, but if that person shows that he's changed for the better, it'd feel too much.

Secondly, from local media here in the state Vicki wasn't sweet innocent lady that everyone made her out to be. Even former co-workers said she was very calculating and not surprised of her actions. So can we put to bed that she was innocent victim in all this and helping this murder escape from jail.

The security breach happened under his watch. If this is an American Correctional Association (ACA) jail their audits should immediately be reviewed for possible bribery! If this jail operates through Direct Supervision that should be immediately changed! The inmates obviously run the jail due to incompetence leadership! I think the sheriff should be fired for allowing Vicky to have a relationship with Casey ,they had a two year relationship outside of work which should not be allowed. It should have been made clear that jailers(employees) do not make relationships with inmates. The relationship could have been stopped a long time ago avoiding the prison escape. She was also allowed to leave the prison with an inmate, there should be a policy of no less than 3 officers escort all detainees to any appointments.
