- #BMWMotorrad BMW S1000RR is a race oriented sport bike initially made by BMW Motorrad to compete in the 2009 Superbike World Championship, that is now in commercial production. It was introduced in Munich in April 2008,[2] and is powered by a 999 cc four-cylinder engine redlined at 14,200 rpm.
BMW made 1,000 S1000RRs in 2009 to satisfy World Superbike homologation requirements, but expanded production for commercial sale of the bike in 2010. It has a standard anti-lock braking system, with an optional electronic traction control. #S1000RR

I don't think you can categorize the R series of bikes in with the S series. These are completely different. Boxer vs inline. 2 vs 4 cylinder. Shaft vs chain. I swear the only similarity is the emblem.

The true ancestor of the S1K is the GSXR-1K.

In my opinion, the evolution of the S1000RR comes from the previous and discontinued K series.
The K1200S and K1300S are better predecessors.
JOLLY ROGERS your absolutely right, I own all three K1200S K1300S hp and S1000RR, it’s crazy that this list doesn’t include Bmw’s five years of research and development for the k1200S as the most technological advanced sports bike of its time with a all new 4 cylinder, 4 valve per cylinder, forged crank with 167 hp and torque that pulls like a rocket, that is absurd, boxer engines are not for performance and shouldn’t be compared. Not saying these bikes that are shown aren’t cool, just need to do better research for this video comparison.

The development of the K series was central to the birth of the S1000RR.
Comparing it to boxer motors makes no sense.
IMO the evolution of the S1K is the get a GSXR-1K and put a BMW emblem on it and your done.

The s1000 has nothing to do with any of those previous bikes. Its actual predecessor is the 2005/6 gsxr 1000

Bmw used the K5 gsxr as a benchmark to beat when developing the first S1000rr its a well known secret, they would have used the fireblade or R1 just as happily if they had the best bike at the time.

paul pridmore - Not even just a benchmark. They literally bought some k5’s and reverse engineered the motor along with some improvements. That’s why the 2009 sounds so much like the K5. It’s pretty interesting history.
You should have added the BMW quick shifter pop aswell. Surely the K1300S should have been part of this?

The first generation s1000rr is bmw's first modern superbike and the r1100 is a succesor to a lot of boxers with shaft drive. To name a few: r69s, r90s and r100rs for instance. All great bikes but in any case, they have very little in common with the s1000rr.
The 1992 model has an eerie resemblance to the pcg 600 from GTA Vice City.

I’m sorry, I know some work went into making the video, but it is completely false to say that the S1000RR evolved from any previous BMW motorcycle. In fact, the S1000RR’s history begins with the Suzuki GSXR in 1985... When BMW decided they wanted to get into the super bike world, a completely different team of engineers were assembled and they designed the bike from scratch, closely referring to the 2005 GSXR 1000. Ask anyone who has ridden all four Japanese super bikes to try the first gen S1000RR and they all say “It feels like a gixxer on ‘roids”. The S1000RR shares ZERO lineage with the boxer-engined BMWs of the past.
In fact, S1000RR was made with reference to GSXR1000 and CBR1000RR, but BMW's technology was amazing. So, In Japan it's still popular or more popular than the 4 Japanese brands.

I don't think the R series come before S series, it's not even close. S is in its own class, high performance inline four street/sport bike.

The R bikes really don't fit in. You should have started with bikes like the K1 or K100RS, continuing with the rest of the K series. These bikes had a bigger influence on the development of the S1000RR.

If they still made a boxer sport bike with rear cowl and underseat exhaust I’d have a new bike. The r9t racer was close but I really want the silencer hidden instead of a massive can on the side of an otherwise sleek machine.

That's not really. No. They made the s1000rr as a copy of the Japanese inline 4 formula, but stronger. It didn't start back then.

video clip is nicely made but as already said, comparing apples with peaches, the evolution of the S1000RR did not start with the R1100RS at all, various different K models in between, 3 and 4 cylinder belong into the evolution stream....

There is ZERO relationship between the boxer engine BMWs and the S1000RR.................... The sound recording for the HP2 Sport was not of a bike with the standard exhaust as shown and the power quoted is wrong it was 133bhp I know I owned one.
