We’ve been in MP for 6 years and I have had a very active life, walking and biking to the beach, town center and bridges/parks. I recommend joining a tennis club if you play because the few available public courts are always packed. I have not thought the traffic was that bad. I have a short commute to work downtown - 20 minutes on a good day. The proximity and abundance of grocery stores and shopping is so convenient. I can stop at a variety of grocery stores, shopping or restaurants on my way home and it’s barely a detour. And specifically where we are, within a 1/2 a mile from home there’s a grocery store, gas station and Target. Belk is exactly 10k steps from my front door. I’ve walked and biked to IOP several times and they just put in a new bike/walk path. Mount Pleasant has been my favorite place to live and it has certainly been very pleasant!

My daughter lives there. Lots of “stagnant water,” for real! Factor in mold problems for lung patients. Gorgeous Isle of Palms is a treasure; and a tourist target. Have fun finding parking😉

Thank you Bill for your honesty about Mt.Pleasant. House prices are approaching 1Mil? Wow! I used to live in Mt. Pleasant, but I moved to Upstate New York in 2007. Here's why. For me personally, my enviromental allergies were growing dangerous & it was either move or become disabled at the very least. What Bill doesn't say about the weather is that it rarely rains in Mt. Pleasant making for high pollen counts and continuous drought - at least back in the 2000's there was extreme drought. Johnnine Dodds Blvd. (Rte.17) was a cluster$^%k with constant gridlock, no street lights, and very unsafe to try to walk it due to no sidewalks. Fortunately that street is a lot better now although you still have to turn onto a frontage road to get to where you are going on that street. It would have a been a lot better if Johnnie Dodds Blvd. had been rebuilt to allow traffic to turn in directly to the business they want to go to instead of having to turn onto a frontage road beforehand. That one thing would have improved traffic on that street 500 percent. I even wrote an editorial about that years ago and got rave reviews from my friends in Mt. Pleasant. Last thing, a lot of Mt. Pleasant is pitch black dark at night due to lack of street lighting - not the safest thing with the amount of traffic there. Hopefully that has been improved upon as well.

Thanks for watching Erick! You might not recognize Mt Pleasant now. While it’s more built up and 17 still has traffic, there are lights and it keeps traffic flowing. We get PLENTY of rain. We do occasionally have periods of drought just like anywhere, but it’s not an issue.

Too bad you had to move. I live in Atlanta and making the move to Mt. Pleasant because Atlanta traffic is awful! Talk about crime! We love the slower pace and love that there are no lights!

Well done videos. I live in Mt. Pleasant, and have watched it grow from 35,000 to over 90,000 in the last 25 yrs. Overall, it's a nice place to live. Future growth will be limited by a lack of available land. And that is a good thing. Convenient to just about everything that Charleston area has to offer, and just a quick trip over the bridge to downtown. Traffic is a problem everywhere. I'm not so sure Mt. Pleasant is special in that respect. Nothing like Atlanta

Thanks for your first hand input. And you couldn’t be more right about traffic. It’s a problem, but it’s not as bad a larger cities like Atlanta.

Hi Toby. We're considering retiring in MP in about 9 years. Our daughter will probably follow us and will live close, but independently. She will be an early childhood teacher. I'm guessing she will need to head west for something affordable, correct? Any recommendations?

I am most concerned about the rapid over development. The Town 'N Country shopping/eating developement was nice, but I do not want an invasion of tasteless chain places. The Olde Village is great, as are the beaches, but an over-suburbanization can ruin a place. Daniel Island has tasteful,y developed, so those kinds of p,aces are nice, but not high-rise condos or cookie-cutter PUDs and such. Johnnie Dodds Blvd is real,y stressed, so there might need to be some attractive creative ways to address that, so it does not turn into an interstate-like highway. I like Mt Pleasant, but it will lose its moniker, if city managers/developers are not careful. Mosquitoes are in everyvwarm place in the summer. Try Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin (all 4 states claim the mosquito as the state bird). Only the West Coast is free of them.

Bill Olson. I have a quick question. I am moving to Mount Pleasant soon with my family and I was wondering if there are alligators in Mount Pleasant. I heard that there are some alligators, but not as much as Goose Creek or Summerville. Is this true ? Please let me know.

Why are people so overly concerned of gators? They are more afraid of you than you are to them, and they will move out of your way.

    • @sarahkukla7136

Do not wear open-toed shoes at night if you anticipate walking or even just getting out of the car in an unlit area. A lot of areas close to the water pride themselves on not ruining the atmosphere with artificial light, and it's easy to forget.
