- This video tutorial shows how to make a fake foam prop rock using carved soft foam and UreCoat® urethane coating.
More Information Here - www.smooth-on.c...
UreCoat® is a two component urethane (A+B) that can be mixed and brushed onto a variety of surfaces to provide a flexible, tough and impact resistant coating. UreCoat® will bond to many surfaces and can be used as a flexible coating for expanded polystyrene (EPS foam), fabric, some metals and plastics, wood, rope (make vines for zoo exhibits) and more. Cured rubber is tough and UV resistant.
UreCoat® is “color neutral” and is easily colored with SO-Strong®, UVO® or Ignite® colorants to create a permanent paint for coating cured Smooth-On urethane rubbers or flexible foams. Cured UreCoat® will bend and flex with the rubber or foam part.

I love the smell of Smooth-On in the morning :)
Plan to be using this to creat my cos-play Ben Gimm 'The Thing' :-)
Nice! Keep us posted as it progresses!
My first thought was to use this to rotocast a rubber mask instead of using latex, the rock texture would be a cool effect for that too.
Is roto casting where you spin a mold and the material coats all of the inside?
This is perfect for a play! You can make minature of these so you can throw them! I was the 300th like by the way.
Glad you found the video useful. Thanks for being our 300th like and for viewing our video.
0:50 Music went "Diablo" real quick.
Ohh you saved my life it’s something I want to do only .
It is perfect for rock throwing giant prop in film or volcano eruption film where rock rolling on cast to flee the scene
Thanks for watching, Paul Dunn, and don't forget to subscribe for more how-to videos!
Just saw this video. I was wondering if you can coat a rock made from crumpled newspaper? It’s a lot cheaper than the foam you used, but maybe the paper would absorb moisture too quickly?
You can used cardboard boxes which is stronger and easier. RUclips Faux Rocks out of cardboard box.
Looks fun!
I like it !Thanks
Thanks for watching, and don't forget to subscribe!
I made a foam stone but used felting cover with wet wash was too much of hand work for me.
IS IT WATERPROOF? can be used in patient positioning cushions
Yes it could.
Can spray paint adhere to this without peeling off?
No you would need to use a flexible paint.
@@smoothon krylon fusion is a decently flexible spray paint that works on rubber. I'm just referring to the adhesion
Can this be used on EVA foam? Like for cosplay armor making? If you want something you want to be able to do rolls and stunts with? OR would you suggest another one of your products for like "stunt" armor?
+Sarah Florian Absolutely. UreCoat works great on EVA foam!
Approximately how much would this project cost from start to finish?
This would depend on the cost of the foam, but 2 gallon units of UreCoat were used.
you are looking at about $250 for just the Smooth on alone ....
the urecoat finish when I use it is incredibly shiny without the matte, rock look as this. I've tried mixing UVO dye and matte powder, but it's still very shiny. Help!
Hello, have you tried using the UreCoat matte powder? UreCoat on its own will be glossy when curing against the air. In this video the Quarry Tone that is being added to the piece makes the UreCoat have a matte finish. www.smooth-on.com/products/urecoat-matting-powder/
Is it safe around children
Once cured, the material is inert. For example, it would be suitable for a museum application.
Can you tell me how much I would need to order of each of the products to make one boulder the same size as the one shown? I have to do a project exactly like this...Thanks
cost roughly too much! about $250
It's safe for aquariums? Im looking a flexible material to do backgrounds for aquariums.
Hi there! This is a good question for our tech support team, can you send them a ticket here? www.smooth-on.com/support/ticket/add/agree/ Thanks for watching!
Your directions say to let cure at room temp of 73 degrees...I live in Texas and do all my props in a 1400 sq. ft. metal building shop that is very rarely 73 degrees. I was just wondering what would happen if applied in 80 to 90 degree heat? (inside of my shop of course) Thanks!
This material would cure faster at a higher temperature.
Was the foam medium or high density? Seems like medium but thought I would ask 😄
It was medium density upholstery foam
Can this be applied to EVA (craft foam/floor mat foam) foam to create a smooth texture? I'm thinking about coating my Ironman suit in this (with red SoStrong pigment) so I don't have to spray paint it. Will it work?
Yes it can. Our Epsilon epoxy is a sandable option as well.
+Smooth-On i was wanting to try that also on my baymax suit. Except the foam i use is Plastazote. can i apply it straight to the foam or do i need to seal it first?
Can urecoat work for brushing on to a spandex suit for cosplay? This tutorial makes it look possible. I want to use another product than latex as latex degrades overtime and this might not

I notice that he's not wearing a respiratory mask. Is this material safe to work with without?
As long as there is room sized ventilation.
Are they waterproof to where the rocks be placed outside in Florida?
+Mardee Hill If the UreCoa completely encapsulates the foam, it would be waterproof but we would not recommend they be installed permanently outdoors due to the effects of UV.
I was going to do the same lol but reckon it make a good footstool conversational pcs.
Hi Smooth-On Team. I have a question and I'm sure you got the right answer. My latest project is a puppethead made out of a huge foamcube. I did cut the final shape with different kind of scissors and now it has a smooth and round surface as I wanted. But of course the pored surface is still recognizable. Plan A: Now I could glue strechable fabric on the foamhead but I am afraid not without any wrinkles. Furthermore fabric would look too fluffy for my taste. Plan B: Is there a way to create a non shiny felxible skin on the final foam head to close the foam structure and get a smooth surface? I would like to spraypaint acrylic or latex paint on this skin. I do really appreciate your feedback. Thank you very much! Best regards, Roy
+sonnenbrandambauch Hi there! Ure-Coat can be made matte by wiping with a cloth or dry brush just after it cures. As for painting, some paints work better than others, would recommend a small scale test be done.
Thank you very much. How can I order Urecoat in Germany? Unfortunatly your german seller "Kaupro.de" don't have this product for sale. Thank you very much again. Best regards, Roy
+sonnenbrandambauch You can also contact Bentley Advanced Materials at benam.co.uk
I want to make a bunch of these so I can do a video where they fall on me!
Awesome
I was thinking of coloring a wetsuit with this. Do you think it would work? It looks like it would but I thought I'd ask. Thanks
In all likelihood it should, but we recommend doing a small scale test.
I'm trying to find a product that is like the coating on the kids playsets you see in the mall playgrounds... Is this like that?
Very similar. Can you send us a tech ticket? Our team can help you hone in on your exact material match - www.smooth-on.com/support/ticket/add/agree/
I'm building one of these for a "sword in the stone." Any thoughts on cutting the "sleeve" for the sword? We're making a little frame to put inside. Can we cut the slot through the coated foam?
If it is rigid foam, yes it would be able to be cut. If you need further help, feel free to contact our support staff here: www.smooth-on.com/support/ticket/add/agree/
Great vid. How do you paint/colour this? Thanks.
Hi Sue, Thank you for watching. You can color UreCoat® with SO-Strong®, UVO® or Ignite® colorants. www.smooth-on.com/products/urecoat/
Thank you.
You have to use tints and dyes to color it while it is a liquid. Once it dries, there's really nothing that will stick to it. Primers and paints will just flake off its surface once it's cured.
Can you use this for waterfalls in the yard?
Thank you for watching. UreCoat® is not suitable for outdoor applications. Would look at using Epsilon. Epsilon, once cured would need to be primed and painted.
Will SmoothOn work on styrofoam
+don doerner UreCoat will work on styrofoam®.
Is there any cheaper alternatives? Or somewhere else i can buy this product from.
Smooth-On has distributors all over the world who you can purchase our materials from. www.smooth-on.com/distributors/
how do u clean the brushes after use?
You could use mineral spirits to clean the brushes, but in this case, disposables were used.
what is the name of the heavy liquid you put on the surface?thanks
This is call UreCoat - More info here: www.smooth-on.com/product-line/urecoat/
is there any way to thin out urecoat?
+IgelFullmetal some of our customers have successfully used mineral spirits or denatured alcohol
Smooth-On that was quick! thanks!
how does it hold up to heat?
Its heat distortion temperature is around 150 degrees F.
