When my philosophy professor made a list of verses he claimed support slavery, I was able to use Jon’s information to show him and the class how the they were out of context! I definitely recommend Jon’s series on slavery... the best I’ve ever watched. No “excuses” made, only truth!

@@432hzbreno7 the whole book of exodus, leviticus, deuteronomy actually annoyed me because of how many times and how many laws God put on his people and kept reminding them of the horrible years in Egypt, to the point I can see that the masters were actually the slaves serving the slaves, not the other way around. People nowadays are obssessed with the word slave, but never look at the context.

You defend an immoral book. Defend the subjugation of women. Defend the genocide commanded by God. Defend the killing of entire cities but keeping the virgins for themselves. Defend requiring rapists to marry their victims. Defend killing children for not honoring their parents. Defend an eternal punishment for a finite crime. Would you lock your children in the basement and set the house on fire if they disobeyed you?
If a child is being raped and I saw it happening, I would do everything in my power to stop that from happening. God would let it happen, even though he has the power to stop it, and punish the rapist with hell. That is unless the rapist accepts Christ in a deathbed conversion, then he goes to heaven. Not because he was a good person who helped humanity, but because he was willing to become a sycophant to an idea. That is Christianity in a nutshell. Most of the people viewing this are more moral than the Christian God or the Bible. Your religion just won't let you admit it and that is sad.

Another good example is to actually read the slave narratives. Adam Coleman (Tru-id apologetics) is a friend of Jon Mccrae and a black man. Responding to the so called "white man's religion" objection to Christianity, he says many slave owners would try to prevent their slaves from becoming Christians. As explained in the slave narratives, many slaves became Christians in spite of, not because of, their "masters."

Genesis 9:25-27
New International Version

Japhet represents the European and Shem represents the Arab.. And in reality my ancestors were enslaved by the Europeans and before that they were more harshly enslaved by the Arabs for twice as long.
The Hebrew doesn’t say “slave” it says “servant” (abed/עֶ֚בֶד) Slave is a 9th century word used to describe Slavic people who used to be enslaved.

@@hughjanus2781 ok. Many issues. First of all there is no Egypt in the Hebrew text …go study more. The Hebrew word is “Misrayim”
Secondly “slave” is not equivalent to “abed” (a phonetic interpretation of the word you described). There were FOUR types of servitude mentioned in the Old Testament and only ONE of those corresponds to what we commonly know as a “slave”. The word עֶ֚בֶד means SERVANT that’s it. It could be a forced servant (Joseph sold by his brothers ) a voluntary servant that was paid UP FRONT (genesis 47: 19) , a thief that owed for what they stole ( Exodus 22: 3) and also a SPIRITUAL servant : God said “for you are my servants (abed) that I brought out of the land of Egypt”. (Leviticus 25: 42)
Servant was also used as a courtesy word with NO BONDAGE IMPLIED AT ALL. I can give you examples :
In this verse the word “abed” is used in two different contexts…one denotes bondage and the other doesn’t
“Now I pray thee, let thy SERVANT (abed) abide instead of the lad a BONDMAN (abed/slave) to my Lord” Genesis 44: 33 -
Here the man speaking wasn’t either a slave to pharaoh or Joseph YET so why did he say “abed” if according to you it means slave? Also the last word “bondman” is the same word (abed /and that person (his father who was far far away ) wasn’t even a slave either to the pharaoh.
More examples :
1 Samuel 17: 32 was David the slave of the king? The word is the same (abdeka/abed) עֶ֚בֶד.
2 Samuel 15: 2 were all those men slaves to Absalom? The word is the same (abdeka/abed) עֶ֚בֶד
Just because a word was translated as something doesn’t mean the translation is accurate. There is no Lucifer in the Hebrew for example the word is Hal-lel. Doesn’t matter what the King James or other translations say.

@@Bigbossman12624 That's not what the Bible says. We are slaves to Christ. If He is Lord then what He says goes. We also call Him Master. Christianity is not an employment opportunity. If you're not willing to give your life to Christ as He gave His life for you then you're not worthy of the name Christian. That's what it means to die to self, take up your cross and follow Him.
The bible does support slavery, but only the type where you get to serve the greatest master you could ever imagine, Jesus Christ.
And even then, that's not slavery; that's being a servant.
"What's the difference?" one might ask. There is QUITE the difference. Let's look at the Dictionary definitions for the words "Servant" and "Slave":
SERV'ANT
- A person, male or female, that attends another for the purpose of performing menial offices for him, or who is employed by another for such offices or for other labor, and is subject to his command. The word is correlative to master. Servant differs from slave, as the servant's subjection to a master is voluntary, the slave's is not. Every slave is a servant but every servant is not a slave.
SLAVE, noun
- A person who is wholly subject to the will of another; one who has no will of his own, but whose person and services are wholly under the control of another. In the early state of the world, and to this day among some barbarous nations, prisoners of war are considered and treated as slaves. The slaves of modern times are more generally purchased, like horses and oxen.
As a matter of fact, this is one reason why I did not like the change in the NKJV. They took the word "servant" and changed it for "slave". I did NOT like that. I didn't like it because these two words are NOT interchangeable or the same. A servant is not always a slave. The MAJORITY of the time, a servant's service is by choice. The slave has no such choice. They either work or they are beaten or worse. A Butler is a servant. King's in ancient times had servants as well. They weren't slaves, but rather they attended to the king's wishes and commands. They were hired as servants for that purpose. The slave is NOT hired, and his service is forced onto him. We are SERVANTS of the Lord, not slaves.
To understand what I mean when I say "the change they made in Romans", I'll show you.

“Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? The one thing that bothers me about this change is that it is totally unnecessary. Actually, when you understand the difference between a servant and a slave, it really makes the change not only unnecessary, but almost worse. We are not slaves of righteousness or slaves of God. Non-believers call us slaves all the time, do they not? But we are not slaves: We are servants. Does God FORCE us to serve Him? No, He does not. So how then are we slaves? Do you not love God of your own free will? Do you not serve Him by choice? Then how are you a slave? You are not a slave; but a servant. We are also not slaves to sin either. We are servants of sin. Why? Because when we sin, we are doing what our flesh WANTS to do.
We are always presented with a choice to either serve God or serve sin. We are slaves to neither, but servants to one or the other. If you serve sin, nobody "made you do it". If you serve God, He did not "force you" because you have free will. You are not a slave to God. And you are also not a slave to sin. We choose what we want to do. Nobody "made us". So I don't like the change from "servant" to "slave" because really it seems to change the whole meaning behind it. When we claim that we are "slaves", we are basically removing ourselves from responsibility for our own actions. "I didn't have a choice Sebastian! I had to!" No, you didn't. We ALWAYS have a choice. As it is written: “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” - Joshua 24:15
"Choose this day whom you will serve."
Whoever or whatever we serve, we serve by choice. If you serve sin, you are a servant to sin; not a slave. If you serve God, you are a servant to God and not a slave.

I'm not really trying to argue semantics or anything here. I was bought with a price, I am not my own, nor do I wish to be. Of course I have the freedom to chose whether or not to follow Christ after He saves me, but if I chose not to obey Him, I can also expect to be chastened by Him, which I thankfully welcome, because He knows what's best for me. If you want to say that makes me a servant, I take no issues, let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

@@michaelbellini3946 people are saying that they would never become a Christian because the Bible condones slavery. This video helps to explain that it doesn’t actually condone it.
Like, there is one verse that says that you should be obedient to your master if you are a slave, but many more that have very tight rules around slavery. Slavery was allowed when someone had a debt they couldn’t pay, then they could work it off for up to 7 years, at which point they had to be released and the rest of their debt forgiven. So it was the equivalent of, if you eat at a restaurant but don’t have the money to pay, you might be able to do dishes there and work off your debt. But all that stuff was taken out.
@@ellyclaire1996 Glad you said that. Unfortunately you're wrong. There's not a single verse against slavery, and an ocean of verses for It, with the new testament giving a hand to It, too. The law you cited Is for Hebrews only. (hint of racism?). Other people could be kept as property and passed on as heritage and could get beaten as long as they would recover from the wounds. Also women, regarless of being hebrew or not, could be kept forever (hint of misoginy?). As you see, the Bible Is so immoral you can't help making a case for all the worst social problems as you're trying to consider Just One of them. @@michaelbellini3946 the Bible teaches that all are created equal and God loves us all equally, no matter the race or sex. The Old Testament is a historical record and has many times that the Hebrews are enslaved by other nations, but it doesn’t say that it’s ok, they are encouraged to fight for their freedom. The whole New Testament is basically about freedom. When it comes to the treatment of women, the Bible does give different roles to men and women, but the role it gives to men is to protect the women “the love her as Christ loves the Church and gave his life for her”. The roles it gives men aren’t better than those it gives women, they are just better suited for men because men and women are different, equally important but different. It’s like being insulted when someone tells you to use a shovel to dig a hole instead of a screwdriver. A screwdriver won’t be good at digging, but a shovel won’t be good at fastening screws. We each have our own place. In all the times I’ve read the Bible, I’ve never read anything that says that it’s ok to beat anyone as long as they can cover it up. I think you must be mixing it up with another book or taking something completely out of context.
In the story of the Good Samaritan, Jesus illustrates how, when a man is beaten his own countrymen won’t aid him but a Samaritan (who Jews were pretty racist against) helps him. It’s to illustrate that race isn’t what makes someone your neighbor and friend. Jesus speaks about when the slaves shall be freed as being the ultimate goal (both physically and spiritually).
Yes, the Bible has many examples of people being immortal, just like a history book that chronicles the Nazi regime, but that doesn’t mean that it condones that behaviour. It’s actually the opposite. It’s a record of the past so those mistakes aren’t repeated. So, for all the misogyny, racism, and violence that happened in the Bible, there is a lesson to be learned. You can’t take one verse or book on it’s own, you have to read the whole thing. If you read only a part of a book on WWII, you might believe that it’s encouraging the mass killing of Jews and other racial groups and disabled people, when it’s just a record of what happened. There are full books in the Bible that just give historical accounts while there are others that teach principles. If there is a main message you can take from the Bible, it’s that nobody is perfect and we all need God. God loves everyone equally and we are to see them as God sees them without judging them based on race, sex, religion, age, or even what they have done. We are all God’s children. I would argue that the purpose of the Bible is to stop slavery, mostly slavery to sin, but physical slavery is an extension of that. If you take all the teachings of Jesus to heart, you couldn’t own a slave.

Slavery in the Bible isn't always necessarily the same as slavery that existed in America, Europe and around the world. Much of the "slavery" in the Bible is actually indentured servitude, where the person is in servitude to pay off a debt, after which they allowed to leave once that debt is paid off. They were also often given a portion of land for their own purposes. Some of these servants remained in servitude because of how well they were treated.

Sooo, only some of the slavery condoned in the Bible is bad? Are you serious? The Bible explicitly condones buying people as property (as long as they're a different race than Hebrew) and owning them for life, selling one's daughters into sex slavery, owning virgin girls to use as you please, and beating slaves mercilessly and without punishment as long as they don't die. How is any of that remotely moral or acceptable? So what if some of the Hebrews worked off debt as indentured servants and were allowed to go free afterwards? You need to quit making excuses for the evil, immoral, jealous, genocidal, deceitful, arrogant, childish, petulent god you worship. He's disgusting.

The problem is not that some people don't know that some Hebrews worked as indentured servants. The problem is that Christians ignore the fact that God supports actual, chattel slavery and racism. It was a world with a slave-based economy, with city states often at war with each other, with polygamous marriages to ensure the continuation of family lines. The laws of the Old Testament regulate this behaviour. Slaves are to be treated humanely (Exodus 21:11). They are given rights and not seen as mere possessions. Hebrew slaves were able to buy their own freedom. Human trafficking is condemned (Exodus 21:16). In contrast to the law code of Babylon, Old Testament Israel was a light to the nations. The Old Testament law and narratives do not stand alone. Jesus is now the best example of what we read. So the moral teaching of the Bible cannot be summarised by a quote taken out of context from the Old Testament to demonize God and His Word. Slavery was permitted in Old Testament law but it was regulated by God giving the Israelites instructions on how to fairly and humanely treat their slaves (it was like indentured servitude where someone could work for you if they owed debts or needed income not cruel like chattel slavery). God allowed the people of Israel to own slaves since they themselves has already experienced over 400 years of generations of Egyptian slavery and knew how inhumane it was to be beaten, overworked and taxed so God set them apart from other nations and cultures around them by giving them a fair way to treat their slaves since slavery had already existed in the world but it doesn't mean God condoned it just used it for His Will to bring Good And in the light of the whole scriptural teaching, we find the reasons for its ultimate abolition (Ephesians 6:9; Colossians 4:1-3; Philemon 15-16 and Galatians 3:28). The Word of God provided the moral standard against slavery in the Roman Empire and against the slave trade in the New World.
But what of genocide or holy war in the book of Joshua? Several things could be pointed out. The use of warfare in the ancient world did not always mean literal total destruction, even when events are described in such terms. Furthermore, the book of Joshua does not describe a genocide. It is not a race who are being wiped out, as in genocide, but a religious practice which was often appalling and degrading. Those who repent (like Rahab from Jericho or Ruth) are not destroyed but become part of Israel. It is not the racial group that is in view but their "detestable practices".
However, after all is said, we must still acknowledge that God brought judgment on the nations of Canaan. It is not our place as believers isn't to sugar-coat the Bible. For some skeptics, this is enough to make God a moral monster. But the fact is that Jesus continued to affirm that God is a Judge who will bring a future judgment on all peoples and all nations. God’s judgment will be just. The list of Old Testament stories rejected by critics often leads to a similar dismissal of the New Testament teaching of Jesus on the existence of hell.
After all, what was the Flood of Genesis or the conquest of Joshua if not a glimpse of future judgment? Hell does not demonstrate cruelty on God’s part, but it does demonstrate His Holiness and our moral accountability. Perhaps this is the real reason many people rail against the God of the Bible? It is not that they think He is a moral monster, but that they are afraid He is a moral Judge, and that has implications for our behaviour now. God is an Eternal Almighty Spirit Being and we as His creatures have Eternal souls and spirits so the punishment for our sins against Him must therefore also be Eternal but so must the reward for righteousness that's why He sent His Son Jesus to live a perfectly righteous and sinless Life (which none of us could ever possibly expect to do) suffer the humiliating and torturous death of crucifixion to shed His Own Blood willingly so that all who willingly accept His gift of salvation by grace through faith in Him will be saved and given Eternal life because that's what God wants is for us to willingly accept His gift of salvation and choose life. Exodus 21:20-21 literally speaks about capital punishment befalling anyone who mistreats their slaves so yes people are taking Scripture out of context to demonize God who literally promises that slaves who are mistreated under someone else's authority is to be avenged. When we hear the word “slavery” we think of innocent human beings, kept prisoner for life, having no rights under law and so reduced to animals. This is clearly immoral because it is unjust: the slave has done nothing to deserve the treatment.
The situation described as “slavery” in the Bible was nothing like this. It is more accurately described as one of indentured servitude. Many “slaves” were indentured servants, working for a term of years
Some other “slaves” were prisoners. There were no prisons. Prisoners had to work to live like everyone else. Some had life sentences. Some served a term and were released.
People didn't beat their good slaves but treated them well and protected their assets thus.
But no matter how rebellious a slave was, you couldn't just beat them to death. And if you knocked out their tooth or damaged their eye then you had to set them free. (Exodus 21:26). God wasn't using what other nations did because He wanted to set His Chosen People of Israel apart from the cruel, inhumane and unjust systems other cultures had so He gave them a fair way to treat their slaves and servants.
There is a lot of ignorance on this topic which is understandable given the age we live in but it's not the nefarious set up we think of when we think of modern slavery.

This is how I used to think of the bible. I thought that people would adjust a few things here and there to try to control us. I belived that there is a God but I did not believe in the bible because I thought it was tampered with. In my experience, people who use the slavery passages to criticize God and the Bible don't care nearly as much about slavery as they do criticizing God and the Bible to justify their own rejection of Him. It's a convenient tool. A stone to throw so to speak.
They invest no time in learning about the rights and protections God provided for slaves by punishing His own people for abuse of them. They also don't consider that many people had to sell themselves just to survive because they were born into extreme poverty. Or that it was a provision for the widows and orphans of nations Israel conquered in battle. Or that Israelites were prohibited from kidnapping anyone and were commanded to take in runaway slaves and care for them. No, that harms the "God is a moral monster" narrative. Regardless, it was the world's system of the time and every nation had a hand in it but no one did it with more civility than Israel. Thanks be to God.

In regards to the examples I gave, I'd say it was better for someone to sell themselves to survive or provide for their family than to starve to death out of poverty and homelessness.
So in that way, it could be good to let someone work for a living rather than starve.

Not that he needs to refute what you said. It's pretty clear that there's context we don"t understand in the Bible. None of us were alive back then.
Even now most of us aren't in the slightest spiritual, but are closer to being spiritually dead. We constantly put our own wisdom ahead of God's, heck, many deny God even exists.
God though often tries to meet people where they are at, but it's not always possible that we can do the same back.
There's stuff God allowed at one point but wouldn't necessarily allow now. There's stuff God currently allows through mercy and grace, that he doesn't actually condone or want to stay in that state.
Taking parts of scripture out if the book and separating them from everything else doesn't make sense. If one understands how the book works, what it represents, the point of using analogies and similes, etc., etc...

Also worth mentioning that John Brown, an abolitionist, thoroughly read the Bible to the point of memorization. It was BECAUSE of his faith that he believed slavery to be a sin and that slaves needed to be freed.
Others at the time used the bible to justify owning other people as property. Check out the Louisiana slave laws at the time.

There were slavery rules in the bible, but transatlantic slavery was unbiblical according to those rules. Slavery condoned by God was more as an indentured servitude and had strict rules as to how the "slave" was to be treated.....
If those slavers really cared about what the Bible said about slavery... the transatlantic slave trade wouldn’t even exist. People who captured others and sold them as slaves were to be executed according to the OT law.

Absolutely. The Bible condoned indentured servitude not some much slavery. In the Bible people sold themselves into slavery to avoid starvation or complete destruction. Thus servitude was initiated by the servant not the master and released on the year of jubilee. Servants also had rights and the Bible is clear those who kidnapped a man and sold into slavery were to be put to death. The antebellum slavery was strictly prohibited in the Bible as it was the same slavery that God had spared Israel from at the hands of Pharaoh.

NO! They took the verses that they thought support slavery out because they were afraid that the slaves would read them and conclude the Bible does support slavery. The remaining verses they left in (whether or not taken out of context) were sufficient to enforce the view that slavery was Biblically justified.
And the slave owners’ concerns were justified. It is “it is so clear that the Bible supports and condones slavery”. Lev 25:44-46 is as clear as day: “As for the male and female slaves whom you may have, it is from the nations around you that you may acquire male and female slaves. You may also acquire them from among the aliens residing with you, and from their families that are with you, who have been born in your land; and they may be your property. You may keep them as a possession for your children after you, for them to inherit as property. These you may treat as slaves, but as for your fellow Israelites, no one shall rule over the other with harshness.”
You can buy non-Israelites as slaves (whether they live outside Israel or are resident aliens), and they may be your property, which your children may inherit after you. These you may treat as slaves. The Bible clearly endorses slavery at this point.

Yeah, that’s pretty condemning about stealing humans and making slaves of them. Slavery in the OT tended to be more about “self slavery”. How you could sell yourself to pay off a debt to someone. The laws about “slavery” and “being obedient to your masters”, is equivalent to being obedient at a job. If you enlist in the military for food, housing, etc. You’re also expected to listen to everything your leaders say. And if you don’t listen to them, you’ll be punished.
Stealing people and enslaving them was punishable by death in the OT. The laws about “slavery” are basically laws about how they shouldn’t go to far to misuse someone who sold themselves, and why the people who sold themselves should be obedient to pay off a debt. Now people removed verses like exodus 21:16 as a way to condone slavery. It’s simple. God doesn’t want slavery, otherwise why would he demand Egypt to “let his people go” who were in slavery for 400 years. God is good.

The slave masters didn't _have_ to take out those verses - and indeed, most slave masters did not. This was something done by _missionaries_ rather than slave owners, and the rationale was that blacks should not get any ideas of _equality._ That the Bible condones slavery is a fact as clear as day. Not only does the Old Testament explicitly condone the chattel slavery of non-Jews, but the New Testament tells slaves to be obedient to their masters, and hard working. The omitted verse mentioned in this video, that "there is neither bond nor free, for ye are all one in Christ Jesus", obviously refers to the hereafter - _not_ life on Earth.
But here's the thing, though: most slaves had access to the complete Bible, and were very aware of the story of Moses and the Hebrews in bondage. "Oh! Let My People Go" is a 19th century spiritual, the precursor to Go Down, Moses, and was popular among slaves. These "slave Bibles" weren't as common as all that - as evidenced by the noticeable lack of extant copies.
And let's not forget, pro-slavery advocates used the Bible to support slavery in debates with white abolitionists, who were certainly not given slave Bibles. Yes, abolitionists used the Bible in their abolitionist arguments, but the only way they could get any head-way was to refer to compassion towards one's fellow man, as prescribed in the Bible - because there really wasn't much of an argument to be made against the institution of slavery itself going by the Bible.
People also don't realize or want to accept that the bible is written in old language, that the definitions for words do not match up the same as they do today or they used differemt words entirely. You need to study the old language and their definitions in order to grasp the correct context in which the words were used.

Because the Bible sends mixed messages about slavery. It fully supports slavery in some situations, and opposes it in others. For example, it often opposed slavery of God's chosen people, but allowed slavery of foreigners.
Notice the distinction made in this verse:
_"Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly."_ Lev 25:44-46

The Bible does not specifically condemn the practice of slavery. It gives instructions on how slaves should be treated (Deuteronomy 15:12-15; Ephesians 6:9; Colossians 4:1), but does not outlaw slavery altogether. Many see this as the Bible condoning all forms of slavery. What many fail to understand is that slavery in biblical times was very different from the slavery that was practiced in the past few centuries in many parts of the world. The slavery in the Bible was not based exclusively on race. People were not enslaved because of their nationality or the color of their skin. In Bible times, slavery was based more on economics; it was a matter of social status. People sold themselves as slaves when they could not pay their debts or provide for their families. In New Testament times, sometimes doctors, lawyers, and even politicians were slaves of someone else. Some people actually chose to be slaves so as to have all their needs provided for by their masters.
The slavery of the past few centuries was often based exclusively on skin color. The Bible condemns race-based slavery in that it teaches that all men are created by God and made in His image (Genesis 1:27). At the same time, the Old Testament did allow for economic-based slavery and regulated it. The key issue is that the slavery the Bible allowed for in no way resembled the racial slavery that plagued our world in the past few centuries.
In addition, both the Old and New Testaments condemn the practice of “man-stealing,” which is what happened in Africa in the 16th to 19th centuries. Africans were rounded up by slave-hunters, who sold them to slave-traders, who brought them to the New World to work on plantations and farms. This practice is abhorrent to God. In fact, the penalty for such a crime in the Mosaic Law was death: “Anyone who kidnaps another and either sells him or still has him when he is caught must be put to death” (Exodus 21:16). Similarly, in the New Testament, slave-traders are listed among those who are “ungodly and sinful” and are in the same category as those who kill their fathers or mothers, murderers, adulterers and perverts, and liars and perjurers (1 Timothy 1:8- 10).
Another crucial point is that the purpose of the Bible is to point the way to salvation, not to reform society. The Bible often approaches issues from the inside out. If a person experiences the love, mercy, and grace of God by receiving His salvation, God will reform his soul, changing the way he thinks and acts. A person who has experienced God’s gift of salvation and freedom from the slavery of sin, as God reforms his soul, will realize that enslaving another human being is wrong. He will see, with Paul, that a slave can be “a brother in the Lord” (Philemon 1:16). A person who has truly experienced God’s grace will in turn be gracious towards others. That would be the Bible’s prescription for ending slavery.
I highly recommend people watch the real history of Africa. It can be viewed on You Tube on BBC News Africa channel and it is called ‘History of Africa with Zeinab Badawi’, it is a 21 part series and it talks about the Real history of Africa including how slavery really began there and what countries enslaved men, women, and children and the atrocities they faced. It also talks about the plethora rich cultures, art, architecture, the lands, resources, battles, and slavery, note: they do talk about Evolution (Evilution, because it is false). Slave trading is punishable by death in the old testament, Exodus 21:16. 1st Timothy 1:8-11 prohibits slave trading.

You guys are a bunch of uneducated doofuses. The Bible doesn't contradict itself unless you take parts out that clarify how to read and use other parts of it.
The Old Testament clearly states that to own another person is a crime punishable by death.
The OT also talks about arrangements to be made when a person worked for another person, i.e. indentured servitude, or in modern parlance, setting up an EA (enterprise agreement) with your boss for agreed wages for services rendered. The OT also talks about bond service, i.e. a service performed to pay back for an aggrievement that you've committed to another party, like a prison sentence. Back then there were no prisons and corporal punishment, i.e. the death penalty was only punishments for crimes committed where you've effectively killed someone, i.e. you've actually killed someone, you've raped someone, paedophilia, you've falsely accused someone of a crime where the punishment would be death if they were convicted (meaning you were trying to have them murdered by the authorities) or in other words grievous perjury. Crimes that were committed where you've effectively damaged or stolen someone's property required that the offender make restitution by either paying them back, normally at a multiple if the offence was intended, or if unintentional at the price of the damage. If the offender couldn't pay them back then the offender was allowed to work off their debt and there were strict guidelines to ensure that the offender wasn't being mistreated by the person aggrieved.
As for the New Testament, passages that look like they support slavery, they do not. To understand this you need to understand when the letter was written in history and the circumstances of the people at the time.
At the time historians believe that about a third of the Roman empire's (RE) population consisted of slaves, not indentured servants (paid labour) but people who were owned by another person, which according to Christians was a crime still punishable by death. Early on the RE was not influenced by Christians (or Jews since Christianity is the continuation of the covenant that God promised thru the Jews) so ownership of people was rife, something that the modern world of politics is slyly trying to push thru corrupt policies and media manipulation today.
Now if Paul or the apostles asked that the law be adhered to strictly (which they did repeatedly) then nearly a third of the RE's population would die of starvation since they had no way to feed themselves. So they gave instruction to change the world around them such that the politics allowed for the slaves to be freed and that a person was given their due wage but the complete setting free of every slave required time, which God foreknew and slowly worked into history even though mankind resists doing good and keeps reverting to evil ways. So by the end of the RE the % of slaves had dropped quite significantly and women were no longer treated as property but started having rights equal to men, which the Bible has always supported since Adam and Eve are two equal halves of the one who all people come from (genetics proves this, mitochondrial Eve anyone?).
After that because of the constant infiltration of non-believers in God within higher politics within different emerging empires and controlling hierarchies, slavery made a comeback, time and time again. Not just amongst black people but in all people of every stripe.
It wasn't until William Wilberforce and Abraham Lincoln, men who required that the Bible be adhered to in government decision making, was there action taken to abolish slavery. An action that cost nearly 2/3rds of the world economies. But still the non-believers continue to bring back slavery in it's different forms, like stealing young girls chance at making a name for themselves by transgenderism therefore forcing them into lower positions, or in foreign countries they take them and sell them into prostitution. Or foreign countries going into poor countries and offering miserly prices for organs that a person can ill afford to lose.

The slavery allowed by God in the Old Testament applied to Israel and their dealings with the Canaanites and surrounding people. These people were so perverse and evil, that God made examples of them. Slavery was one of their punishments. The Atlantic slave trade where light skinned people exploited dark skinned people by going in, colonizing them, then taking them abroad simply for free labor is no way near what God told and allowed Israel to do. Who are we to question God actually! Just because WE don't like something or disagree with something doesn't give us the right to pit our puny finite brains against the infinite mind of God who is outside time and space! God specially created the nation of Israel. No other nation was created like this. God told them to take Canaan because the Canaanites and related peoples there took evil to whole new levels of debauchery and abomination. It ain't meant to be rainbows and unicorns! There's things in the Bible that are ugly, harsh, and nightmarish! It shows what God thinks of sin and evil. Canaan had their chances and God took them out. However, there's also things in the Bible that tell how slaves should be treated. It also tells us in the Ten Commandments how we should treat others, this would include slaves which are others. In order to understand the Bible as it should be, one needs the power of the Holy Spirit to guide and give clarity. Reading it in our own strength we miss out. Also, most take verses out of context, way out of context in many instances. We can't cherry-pick it like that without losing the big picture.

People look at the Bible from a modern context and although the Bible is applicable for today, some of the everyday things, like opening slaves should be seen in an ancient context! Many cultures owned slaves in ancient times, but the difference being - the Bible tells slave owners how to treat their slaves correctly, not to mistreat them, like the pagans did! The Greeks and Romans used to use their slaves for sex as well as other slave things, but Christians weren't to use them like that!

Here is my question. I ask respectfully and honestly. Nobody alive has ever been a slave and nobody alive has ever owned a slave. Slavery is illegal in the USA. So why is slavery hung onto like a dog with a bone? There are sex slaves of all colors being trafficked but thats it in America. Why not let go of it and move on? I think it holds black people back from success in their lives if they dwell on this as if it happened to them personally. They feel defeated and angry and it will eat you up inside. I have had so many horrible things happen to me personally in my life ,but I had to find a way to forgive because I was so bitter and angry and resentful that it was ruining my life. Lets all just move on, help each other and replace all that with love for all human beings and make our own happiness and forgive what happened to other people by other people in the past for our own sakes. The best revenge you can get is by being successful in your life and rising above it. It was terrible and sad but its over now and it was generations ago. Lets stop all this evil and hatred and violence and just learn to live together. And lets stop with the gangs killing each other. In both instances, we, as human beings, utilize external criteria beyond the intrinsic scope of the book (the Bible) to assess the virtue or vice of certain verses within it. The Bible does not specifically say that slavery is evil. It has laws regulating its practice - both of debt slavery and chattel slavery (heritable life long slavery).
Slavery as morally wrong is a concept that is new in history because of the experience in the Americas specifically.
For example, in the US, the abolitionist were considered radical even in the North. Which means even where slavery was abolished, it wasn’t seen as completely immoral and evil by those citizens.
Not until after the American Civil war did most westerners come to the idea that it was wrong, and probably wrong everywhere.
How many slaves could really read? This was more of a manual on haw to use God to scare slaves.
