I'm a huge Doom fan and have been one since long before the modern games. I can count on one hand the number of times I've played against actual people outside of Eternal's Battlemode. And that's Classic Doom AND Doom 2016. Hell, my favorite classic Doom title is Doom 64, a game with no multiplayer component. While Doom was the pioneer in FPS multiplayer, it was never the primary draw. People play Doom for the campaign. And honestly, it's nice to have single player FPS titles. We have TONS of online multiplayer shooters. If you want multiplayer, go play Quake Champions, Overwatch, Fortnite, Counter Strike, and probably 50 others I can't think of at the moment.
Funny rant because the og Doom were not much multiplayer games, since they were mostly multiplayer over LAN. That feature came second, the the single player experience. In the newer Doom games however, which have ruined the Doom franchise, they may have removed the multiplayer, but have made the singleplayer part cater to multiplayer gamers, by ruining all aspects of atmosphere, tension and horror in the games. As for multiplayer, that became big in the Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament days. Before that it was mostly LAN-play, and that community was not as big.

3:54 I'm sorry but this is a bad excuse. You know what else had multiplayer when it first dropped? Super Mario Bros. You know what a lot of first-party Mario titles dropped? Multiplayer. Multiplayer is not what made Doom. It's an addition to the main game. One that I'll grant you, absolutely extended it's lifespan, but by no means is a defining feature of the game to anyone who grew up in that era. Back in those days a new FPS was dropping basically every 3 months, and most of them had some form of internet connectivity. Golden-Eye was more well known for its multiplayer component than Doom, and that was strictly split-screen.

a few points, it's a big comment, because we're talking doom's legacy and influence here regarding doom the dark ages needing multiplayer based on legacy of doom's deathmatch while the original doom did pave the way for the popularity of multiplayer with deathmatch, you are wrong about how important it was compared to the single player and compared to quake's multiplayer. lets start with single player vs multiplayer. the majority of doom players played those episodes, hell the majority of the player base only had episode 1 because it was shareware, so just based on that we know the single player is what most people came for. now for the importance compared to quake, just because something was one of the first doesn't mean it's more important than the game that was influential industry wide. quake was the one that really revolutionised and popularised it to the point where even before 2016, when someone says doom, most they think of it's singleplayer, when someone says quake, most think of it's multiplayer. same way how despite wolfenstein 3d being the one that paved the way for fps games, it's influence just doesn't touch what doom did at all, another example about influence and importance, i can scream from the mountain tops that the first 2 castle wolfenstain games in the early 80s was one of the first stealth games ever, still doesn't matter when the series that was influential on the stealth genre was the og metal gear games, so the argument about how it should be in the game based on legacy is shaky at best when most people don't associate doom with multiplayer. plus....you can talk all you want about how it's ''50% less of a game'' compared to 2016 doesn't change that it's multiplayer was a weakness because it was just worse halo 4 multiplayer. so if you want to objectively look at doom 2016's quality as a whole, 50% was a solid singleplayer, 50% was worse than halo's worse multiplayer....

I'm a huge Doom fan and have been one since long before the modern games. I can count on one hand the number of times I've played against actual people outside of Eternal's Battlemode. And that's Classic Doom AND Doom 2016. Hell, my favorite classic Doom title is Doom 64, a game with no multiplayer component.
While Doom was the pioneer in FPS multiplayer, it was never the primary draw. People play Doom for the campaign.
And honestly, it's nice to have single player FPS titles. We have TONS of online multiplayer shooters. If you want multiplayer, go play Quake Champions, Overwatch, Fortnite, Counter Strike, and probably 50 others I can't think of at the moment.

Funny rant because the og Doom were not much multiplayer games, since they were mostly multiplayer over LAN. That feature came second, the the single player experience. In the newer Doom games however, which have ruined the Doom franchise, they may have removed the multiplayer, but have made the singleplayer part cater to multiplayer gamers, by ruining all aspects of atmosphere, tension and horror in the games. As for multiplayer, that became big in the Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament days. Before that it was mostly LAN-play, and that community was not as big.
Can’t believe there’s still people who think they ruined the franchise, your being so disrespectful to the amazingly talented team… they did something absolutely incredible with the game, I’ve played the old doom, not like I did every one of them but I liked it. Because there was not small changes they made. They changed the entire game to a completely different type of game and set it in the Doom universe, which would be fine if they labeled it accordingly, but they did not.

Multiplayer is not what made Doom. It's an addition to the main game. One that I'll grant you, absolutely extended it's lifespan, but by no means is a defining feature of the game to anyone who grew up in that era. Back in those days a new FPS was dropping basically every 3 months, and most of them had some form of internet connectivity.
Golden-Eye was more well known for its multiplayer component than Doom, and that was strictly split-screen.

Doom multiplayer has been out dated since Goldeneye on 64 man. The Doom of today provides singe player experiences that outclass everything else and feels like PvP on its hardest difficulty.

regarding doom the dark ages needing multiplayer based on legacy of doom's deathmatch
while the original doom did pave the way for the popularity of multiplayer with deathmatch, you are wrong about how important it was compared to the single player and compared to quake's multiplayer. lets start with single player vs multiplayer. the majority of doom players played those episodes, hell the majority of the player base only had episode 1 because it was shareware, so just based on that we know the single player is what most people came for. now for the importance compared to quake, just because something was one of the first doesn't mean it's more important than the game that was influential industry wide. quake was the one that really revolutionised and popularised it to the point where even before 2016, when someone says doom, most they think of it's singleplayer, when someone says quake, most think of it's multiplayer. same way how despite wolfenstein 3d being the one that paved the way for fps games, it's influence just doesn't touch what doom did at all, another example about influence and importance, i can scream from the mountain tops that the first 2 castle wolfenstain games in the early 80s was one of the first stealth games ever, still doesn't matter when the series that was influential on the stealth genre was the og metal gear games, so the argument about how it should be in the game based on legacy is shaky at best when most people don't associate doom with multiplayer.
plus....you can talk all you want about how it's ''50% less of a game'' compared to 2016 doesn't change that it's multiplayer was a weakness because it was just worse halo 4 multiplayer. so if you want to objectively look at doom 2016's quality as a whole, 50% was a solid singleplayer, 50% was worse than halo's worse multiplayer....
Your last statement is definitely not an objective statement. You clearly don't know what objective means. And you trying to downplay the significance of early DOOM MP doesn't change reality. It was groundbreaking and very instrumental in shaping the modern multiplayer experience. It was one of the most active online gaming communities in the mid-late 90s. Without early DOOM MP, Quake simply would not exist.
@@RealCynicalGamer the multiplayer was a bad mix of halo 4 and quake that didn't know what it wanted to be, it didn't have the weapon sandbox depth of halo and because of the loadouts it can't be a arena shooter. health pools are some of the spongiest in an ID multiplayer game which makes gunfights slower compared to those classic titles, the multiplayer beta nearly killed the launch of doom because how bad it was, it's why when people talk doom 2016, they ignore the multiplayer and glaze the campaign.
downplaying? i simply told you that doom's contributions to multiplayer is not equal and certainly doesn't exceed that of quake because laying the ground work doesn't equal importance as something that is massively influential which is what quake was. i will add, what ID should have kept is snapmap, that payed homage to doom's actual long lasting community based legacy, modding, the mod scene in doom is almost equal to that of bethesdas in house games and snapmap was a nice homage to that and should have stayed in the franchise
