Forensic team calls Eric - "mate, come on over to Scotland Yard, we have a few questions..." and Eric popped on over to the 'Yard in his MG. They showed him the LP. "That's my cigarette burn, alright" and they give him his guitar back. "Sorry it took so long Mister Clapton!" they called after him as he fairly danced back to the carpark. "She's back, finally I can give up those tinny Strats!" and they laughed. He fell asleep that night cradling the old Gibson.
These are awesome shots I’m sharing this with my friend Hugh Flint on Facebook. Well done on this, Mark.
For those who don’t know, Hugh was John Mayall’s drummer with the Bluesbreakers when Eric was part of it.
Awesome! Thanks so much RD. Cheers, Mark
I think my Les Paul has more photos of it than Beano and its not famous 20 pictures wow
Just sayin', maybe we should be looking for the Beano amplifier?
That would be some discovery, Abby! I wonder where it is right now??
@@mybluesguitar left behind in Greece when they had to flee, right?
@@vayabroder729 no, eric had a jtm 45 head and 4x12 in greece. the beano amp was the jtm 45 2x12 combo model #1962
One day, I hope Dirk Ziff returns the Beano Burst back to Eric Clapton, while he's still alive. I'm sure Eric would even pay market price for the guitar just to get it back. Dirk would still have about 299 Bursts remaining in his collection (!!).
It would be great if that happened.
Wjo is this Dirk ziff????
@@pabloperez4063 Just Google his name. Easily the richest guitar collector in the world (billionaire), who reportedly owns up to 20% of all original Bursts ever produced.
@@collinwhitley3543 sounds like a "right meanie".
That is one sweet Les Paul. Thanks for sharing, and I can't wait for it to finally come to me via UPS or FedEx!!! They must knock at the double doors in back where I have my shop! LOL!
🤣
It’s good to know there was an unknown guy following Eric around in those days taken pictures
The picture of the red LP Special at 7:15/10:45 is the most interesting to me. No one ever discusses that one. Or the single cut LP Junior show in some archive post Blind Faith period photo books.
I think the red LP Special was owned by the guitarist in the support band. I can't remember the name of either the band or the player. Maybe someone else who does can chip in? Thanks
Mant thanks for your kindness to help out all. Of us on guitar
So pleased to be able to help my fellow fans of this style :-)
It's on the east coast, in the states in a collection of old geetars... and it's probably going to stay there until further notice...
I wonder how many people in the 'club' have seen it.
Thank you for the awesome video
Thanks FG! Glad you like it. Cheers, Mark
Thanks for that, fascinating subject for me - maybe a typo anyway but just for info: the Decca session photos were taken sometime during March28-31 '66 not May.
Hey John, thanks for the correction. Much appreciated :-) Cheers, Mark
Fascinating video. I, too, wonder where this beautiful instrument is today.
I'd love to know!
Ask joe bonamassa, he reakons he knows where it is. That raises the other question though, it's stolen so someone probably wants it back
@@sam_uelson i dont think clapton will go after the owner if this claim is legitimate. Now calpton may want to see it again and possibly play it. But the claim is most likely false
I doubt we will ever know. The thief either knew what it was worth (even at the time, just being Clapton's guitar made it worth more than the average LP), or they had no idea and would have pawned it right away. The latter is doubtful, but if the thief didn't know how special the guitar was, the pawn shop wouldn't have either and it probably got sold to someone who had no way of knowing... resulting in it being lost forever, just another Les Paul burst, no way to connect it to Clapton.
If the thief DID know it's value, which is more likely, they would have kept it as a souvenir. It would be a double edged sword, knowing you own Clapton's most valuable guitar and yet it's stolen so you can't possibly share it with anyone... EVER.
Maybe someday it will show up in some dead guy's storage space or apartment or something... but who knows what shape it will be in, or if it's even identifiable. Hell, that may have already happened and nobody knew what it was... again, just another Les Paul with no way to connect it to Clapton.
@@livewire2759 Remember, at the time it was stolen, Eric was known as "God".
Great photos! Wasn’t the group he played in Greece called The Glands?
Hi Ricardo, Yes, that was what they called the group they assembled in England then took out to Greece. I believe they all travelled in a big old American station wagon!
@@mybluesguitar the great Slowhand; one of the most influential musicians in the 20th and 21st centuries. Like the greats Peter Green, Peter Frampton and Paul Kossoff they are some of God’s gifts to Humanity, giving so much joy and inspiration to so many through their art. With Eric and Frampton they are like fine wines; the older they get, the better. Both are going through a little bit of a rough patch now, health wise. I have been reliably informed the double whites had at two pole screws removed if you look closley
Gosh, I've not noticed that before, John. I'll have to check it out. Cheers, Mark
Does anyone know if they’re modeling the current Standard 60’s after this tone, with the hotter 61 Burstbuckers?
I don't know myself, Tom. If anyone else reading does, please chip in.
i was under the impression the les paul he brought with him to greece stayed there. he had to do a "runner" to get out of playing at the club and the owners had threated to chop off claptons hands if he quit playing with the juniors cuz of the following he had developed locally over his short time there. i have read that a marshall amp and a les paul where left behind because they had to do some trickary to even get EC out of the club.
I've read a very similar story, Matthew, and remember that he left the amp behind, but I *thought* he managed to get the Les Paul back with him. I can't swear to it but that's what I recall. Thanks for posting. Cheers, Mark

I think the colour photo taken at the Lynx Club in Borehamwood may have been taken by Keith Turner.
Thanks for that, UncleBoko. Was he a 'known' photographer, or a friend of yours?
@@mybluesguitar he was a friend.
No one ever mentions what became of the Summers burst. Eric borrowed this guitar from Andy but purchased it soon after. And how many bursts does EC currently own?
Interesting question! I believe he has at least one...
He gave his second LP to Albert Lee in 79. Albert still has it
@@pabloperez4063 That was a black Les Paul Custom - the one he used in Delaney & Bonnie and quite possibly the same one seen in photos from the Cream Disraeli Gears sessions.

Hello Mark 🎸
How are you my friend ?
Do you know if the books you mention are also translated and available in French?
For my birthday this year in December my friends gave me the book
"Clapton the god of the Blues"
By Chris Welch and it is translated into French which is a good thing
Maybe you should have this book?😀😉
Pitchoun Blue Hello my friend, all is well here, thank you, and I hope things are very good indeed with you. I do not know for certain, but I would be fairly certain that Marc Roberty’s book will be available in French. As for the other one, I don’t know. Both are great books!

the world is small and I ask myself the question who is in the country do you know the english music group named Mt.Desolation?
I have good news I invested in a Fender Stratocaster of the Custom Shop you will guess that it guitar I buy? lol
By the way you have seen on youtube videos circulating from a concert tribute to Ginger Baker video concert of 17 February 2020 a version of had to cry today is fantastic Steve and Eric plays there with passion "always" like an eternal flame
Kofi Baker and some guests
I was very moved when I listen to Eric sing the song The tale of brave ulysses, it's the first time I hear Eric sing how to tell you without the timbre of voice his voice that identifies him as much in music that when he talks to someone, in fact it's like Jack singing through Eric and even Ginger why not, I know it's very spiritual what I say, and it sounds a little bit of delirium but it's is my feeling and I'm not crazy (just a little bit because I'm Franco-Italian) lol ;-) I invite you to listen when he sings to see for yourself this particularity, I will listen to it a few times but with headphones this times this ;-)
Friendship Mark Greg
I can confirm that the patreon video is much better !
eric had 2 les pauls early on and he left one behind in greece. the photos from 1965 could be either guitar. it is said the beano didn't have a very flamey top so the photo of a guitar with a heavily flamed top is most likely not the beano burst. obviously all the photos taken after eric returned from greece are of the beano guitar, since that was the only les paul he had at the time.
I hope it turns up in my lifetime. Thanks for commenting, Andrew.
I believe it was just the amplifier he left behind. I don't believe he owned 2 Les Pauls at the time
very nice man, keep it up 👍🏼
Thanks, will do!
I think the beano is 60 burst. Because eric said the guitar had a slim neck despite He also played 58, 59 burst.
I think that his was an early 59 with an incredible slim neck. Because i dont think gibson would of made a les paul without a flame top in 60. But who knows
Hi McS. It could be! Have you seen a website called 'burstserial.com'? There are tons of pics of original sunbursts on there. Including a few plaintops from 1960. Cheers, Mark
From what I understand, in the late 50s, Gibson had a "standard" neck that 99% of guitars were built with, but they also offered three other "custom" size necks for "high profile" players of the day. So it's possible that its one of the very few that were specially ordered with a custom size neck... but I'm no guitar expert by any means, so I could be completely wrong.
Great job buddy! Greetings from Barcelona
Glad you like it, AGM. Thanks so much. Cheers, Mark
Thnx, Mark
Pleasure, Slim. Thank you :-)
If someone stole it from whoever has it would there be a legal case to answer given that it's stolen goods? And if police are aware of the whereabouts of stolen goods aren't they obliged to retrieve them and return them to their rightful owner? Or does that lapse after a number of years?
I don't know the law, but in moral terms if something was stolen, its status is still 'stolen' no matter how many years have passed.
Awesome blue's riff
The Deedee Files Thanks Deedee Files. I did a video tutorial on the trill riff a while ago.
When Eric was in Greece, it's said that he had two Les Pauls. He left one behind so he could escape and go back to Britain.
I know he left an amp behind.
The guitar he returned to England with was the Beano Les Paul

Can sniffer dogs be used if you have Clapton and possible Beano bursts in the same room?
Possibly. Must have some Eric DNA on it!

Great Beano tone on that intro riff, what is it ??
Thanks John. It's an exercise I posted a few months ago. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/CN9NYtqeGTE/видео.html
@@mybluesguitar I was curious about the amp/software used on this to get that tone..........
Thank you very much for this video. I’m a big fan of the Beano Burst story. I’ve always wondered if the pickup covers were just taken off or if they suffer additionally some kind of modification... probably we will never know. Cheers!
I hope the guitar resurfaces in my lifetime, Polo. Questions such as that one might then be answered. Maybe! Cheers, Mark
I never understood why Clapton did not try to get it back. If Bonamassa knows the whereabouts of Beano one call would surely do. Can somebody enlighten me why that never happened?
Maybe something was done (is being done) behind the scenes???
Wouldn't that be nice...👍💰😎💪👏👌🇺🇸🦫🎶🤞
Clapton said he didn’t even like the way it played. Just this week a guy made a vid claiming to have it.
Interesting. I must seek that out.
kinda funny considering he bought multiple bursts trying to replace it.
Does anyone know if Eric used a Dallas Rangemaster?
I know that Mick Taylor certainly did, in his Bluesbreakers days, at least on a few occasions live. As for Eric, I tend to go with the popular view that no he didn't. Although there are just a couple of instances on the Beano album that make me wonder. That distorted chord part just before the solo??? It's been a long time since I played through a cranked 50w Marshall head, and I can't remember whether they make that sound of not just by themselves. My memory is of tremendous sustain and tons of bass.
@@mybluesguitar to give clairvoyance, if you plug a les paul into a marshall jtm 45 or a handful of the good jtm 60s you will get that beano sound in my own findings i can get the sound with it cranked
Hi, this has been a subject of debate for years and years but I think the answer is definitely positively no, eh maybe 🙃 . They were designed to sit on top of the amps and if you look at the pics there isn’t any sign of one. Famously the mike is a good 12 feet away from the amp.
Has he ever gotten the lp back
I am pretty sure not.
no. supposedly it is in the usa now.
The thief has enjoyed the object of the crime for decades. The enigma is tho worth a fortune it likely can’t be sold. So anonymous thief, it’s time to play a few last licks and give it back to our friend EC...
I would be great to see the guitar surface from wherever it is.
To be only able to show it off at a wine dinner with associates who either don’t appreciate what it is or could care less, is well, maybe the way you want it to be...but I can’t imagine anyone in possession of it not wanting someone, anyone to appreciate the significance of the guitar. If you can only show it off sparingly, in the shelter of your castle’s dungeon and provided your guests signed an NDA before you showed it off, you’ve completely missed the point of “acquiring” such a piece of history, but what do i know....
In 1966, there were two reasons to steal a Les Paul in the UK. To strip it for parts. To sell on.
The guy who stole it almost certainly got rid of it within days. He was either connected to a music store who needed parts for a repair, connected to a record company. Les Pauls were very rare in the UK back then which meant to steal one you'd need to know where there would be one and you had to have a buyer ready to take it.
As for the thief, I doubt he made it out of the sixties.
So he took the covers off ?
Yes, Luke. Probably late '65 or very early '60.
WHAT DOES THE STRAP SAY?
From memory, it has the names of a few of Eric's then favourite bluesmen, including Otis Rush.
@@mybluesguitar tHANKS mUCH :)
It looks like it is more of a tobacco burst than a red one to me. A bit too dark around the edge. I am however no expert but still...
Maybe one day it will appear and the pickups can be taken out to reveal the paint in the cavities?!
I think Jimmy Page has it. He took Beck's tele loaner as a gift, and had no problem stealing songs.
😂
@@pabloperez4063 Jimmy engineered the album, and knew the guitar.
Joe Bonamassa says he knows where this guitar is, and who has it.
Would love to see it.
True. He followed the clues
Clapton escaped from Greece with his Les Paul, though his amp was left behind. He used that guitar until it was nicked during Cream rehearsals. The original one was purchased after he saw Andy Summers had one and Summers directed him to 'a shop on Charing Cross Road (i.e., Selmer's) where there was another for £80. After the theft, Clapton offer £200 to Summers for the one he had. Summers notes this starting on pg. 68 of his memoir 'Take the Last Train'.
Thanks for that note, MrCherryJuice. I wonder where the amp is now? I was in Athens at the end of last year. Maybe it's still there?
This guitar is arguably the reason bursts became popular and collectable. If it's found, it will be the most valuable burst ever.
I’d argue it was Jimmy page. A vid was made recently of a guy claiming to have it.
The question is who stole the guitar and why. It was either a random thief who wasn't particularly after EC's guitar or a fan who just wanted EC's guitar. Remember, this happened before the Les Paul burst became a widely desirable and collectible guitar - July 1966 the Beano album had just been released and that was the month Cream formed and the guitar was stolen the same month. Whoever has it now may not even know it's origins but probably suspect it was stolen a long time ago. It could also have been left in some long forgotten storage...
Chances are that whoever has it may have viewed this video, if they ever do a searche for the guitar. I reckon it will surface one day.

Great video and great detailed research!
Please change the music because it’s a bit annoying and rhythmically doesn’t work, especially the first riff... There’s plenty of great backing tracks which should accomplish the job very well... Thanks!
Thanks for your comment, Iadora. There are two versions of this video. The main one is available on Patreon, and the backing music for that comprises excerpts of covers of a few Bluesbreakers tunes. Because of copyright issues I didn't use that here, but instead dropped in some 'looped' sections of exercises. If you find it annoying, what I suggest is hitting the mute button and playing a few tracks from the Beano album. Cheers!
