Great recording! I love how thunder traveling from one side to another. And to my ears Zoom H4nPro microphones sounds exceptional in this situation with impressive stereo separation. I adore sounds of thunderstorms and listened to this recording with great pleasure. Thanks for uploading it.
Thanks a lot, Andrew. Like you I was very surprised by the results of this recording. I expected a decent quality but nothing really good. But as you said the quality of the recorded thunder is good. So what have I learned from this session: The better the equipment is the more flexible you are when it comes to the position of the microphones to the sound source. If you use "standard" equipment you need a clear and strong signal to get a good result and you are not very flexible with the positioning of the mics. And it is easier to record low frequencies. The brighter the sound the more difficult it is to get a clean and precise recording and the more noise floor is audible. This all seem to be standard knowledge but it is so easy to sometimes simply forget these basics. All the best, my friend.
I love thunders and strong rain, and this recording is so real that it looks like to be under the rain!! To protect small gear I use a small umbrella for cameras. It has a hot shoe plug, so you can put directly on the camera, or a small tripod using an adapter. I think it should be good for audio recorder too. Have a nice day Diderich ☺
Thank you very much for your support, Giuseppe. Normally I would use a small waterproof bag to protect my recorder against humidity or rain. But the gear was just a few meters away from me and always below big trees so I took the risk that maybe a few drops will reach the H4Npro. And when the rain started to increase I took the tripod with the gear inside the house and filmed with with open doors. But the tip with the small umbrella is a good one. I will check this out. This is a beautiful acoustic image for such memories. No spectacle - just nature. These thunderstorms also arrived in Germany - but at times of rush hour.

Thank you very much, Hp. I was lucky to record these moments because I decided to take my small recording rig with me. I was surprised about the quality from the H4Npro. I did not expect such a clean and detailed recording. It's not comparable with the big setups but for a situation like this it is like the title of one of my latest videos: "A little is usually enough". All the best, my friend.

Thanks very much. I recorded the video with an Osmo action camera, so I didn't have to worry about that device. It was more the audio recorder that I had to worry about as it is not waterproof. So when it started to rain, I had to change the location of the recording. In the end I filmed the weather sensation from the dining room with the doors to the balcony open. I'm happy with the results too. It shows that even devices that we now call "simple" can achieve good results. Thank you for your valuable support. I wish you all the best.
