- Pointing a camera at a CRT TV is one thing, but recording computer monitors is a bit different. I've received lots of questions about this over the past decade, so here we are! These are my current tips and tricks for filming CRT monitors.

You might just have the cleanest images of CRTs that I've ever seen.
Hey, Clint! Professional sound recordist and sound designer here. I’ve never had any issue with the audio from your content, and seeing your approach to combating noise from your CRTs was refreshing.
Often times I see (or hear, rather) content creators going too far in the way of audio post production, and I think you’ve found a great balance of getting as good a recording as possible, and then only doing what’s necessary to make the content great.
Premiere Pro isn’t the most audio friendly (I assume Adobe is trying to get you to use Audition CC for serious audio work), so almost all of our content funnels through me and my audio-specific “toolbox.” All that to say, great work, and keep it up!
As a fellow sound designer who just now wanted to write the exact same comment (never had an issue, your approach is great) I just have to say: I absolutely agree :D
Same. I saw the parametric EQ and thought .. oooh, that's probably too wide to be used as a whine notch filter. But the audio always sounds fine in the end, and that's all that matters.
I am impressed at how much trouble Clint goes to, to get good looking and sounding clips. You make it look easy, but you're really all up in the details, tweaking with finesse. 👍
HAHAHAHAHA “Clint”
@@DonnaChamberson Yeah, that's his name?
“CRTs was refreshing” I see what you did there.
I always wondered why your CRT recordings look so clean and nice.
Didn't know THAT much work is involved.
Thanks a lot for this video, I found that incredibly interesting! :)

Jokes on me, my smartphone is replacing your ASCII heart with a high resolution emoji bitmap heart. :D
@@cube2fox We are limited by the technology of our time ε>
Yep this looks better than others, others having flickering CRT which is not great at all
@@Um_y8ki Flickering, yes. But even if they took care, a big black horizontal line running over the screen is pretty much normal.
Mac pro 1.1 is displaying a perfect ASCII :)
I always wondered why your on camera CRTs looked so good. This is some legit advice!

I always thought you plugged the VGA cable into some sort of video capture device for your close-ups, since they're so clean. I'm amazed that you put this amount of effort in to it, and it is GREATLY appreciated!
When it just shows the game footage, that is usually exactly what he is doing. He has talked about having a specific PC with a capture video card.
But that doesn't work when he needs to show the CRT in the shot, or when he's recording from some other type of computer.

That is one of the great mysteries of the universe.
It might look strange to new generation but it is a golden content for us early generation. This channel give me the chills. Thanks for taking me to my childhood. Keep it up.
I love you showing off all the CRT shots in the video when you're talking, absolutely flicker- and moiré-free.
They are so damn crisp that my brain refuses to accept that they're real. They have to be CGI'd in, somehow....
Blurb at the end talking about it being a discussion and being open to learning is part of the wonderful vibe of LGR vids. So wholesome and pure. I love this channel.
Johnny Castaway ! The greatest screen saver of all time, good one Clint!
I still run that screensaver :)
You perfecting filming CRTs in the background while teaching us is such a flex
You need a can of *MWAR-Gone™.* My old grandad swore by it!
That screensaver made me remember a lot of things from my childhood. thank you for everything you do according to old tech.
i find the production of video as tedious and time consuming as my day job, so really I don't have what it takes to make it on youtube. Thank you LGR, for your relaxing videos about nothing in particular about old computers
CRTs in your videos always look great!
Thank you LGR for this video, you've inspirated me about some projects about old 90's computers and games, particulary LAN parties. Those computers you have, look awesome, and also recorded image on them. Never seen so good looking images of CRT monitors, it looked almost like real, and colors were shining live, like you are looking at real monitor and DOS games. Felt urgue to join, and play some oldies, like when I see real old computer with DOS game on screen and noone behind. That feeling from your images was like in reality, just sit behind computer and enjoy some oldies.
Just wanted to chime in to say I appreciate all the hard work you put into shooting and editing. It means a lot to me to see and hear a well produced video.
LGR, thank you for removing the CRT whine ALWAYS!
8-bit guy quite often forgets it and it's an absolute pain!
Very nice timing! Just bought myself new camera few weeks ago. Thank you!
16:00 - Use Izotope RX to get rid of that more precisely. In that program you can see the frequencies and if there's a high pitch present.
I'll look into that, thanks!
@@LGR yes, spectral de-noice in iZotope pretty good. Also Waves have X and Z Noice. Also noice filters.
Viewing with a spectragraph helps, if that's an option. It's the colorful plot of time on the X axis and frequency on the Y. (Rather than a waveform view of amplitude on Y.) Whine would look like a straight (usually) brighter line across the top of the spectrum. You would see if there's anything there, and know by the intensity how much needs to be removed - or when you're done.
I think it was Audition that used to have a tool where you could highlight and select a frequency region and apply edits (like amplitude) on just that selected region. Kinda surprised Premiere doesn't have that built in since they're both Adobe products.
@@nickwallette6201 This exactly! Clint, you can activate this spectral view by using shortcut shift+D in Audition. It's use is really dependent on the frequency resolution and amplitude range you choose. Frequency resolution can be changed with shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Up/Down, which you probably want to set pretty high, to see where the CRT noise is. Increasing it decreases the "brightness", which you can counter by increasing the amplitude range in Auditions settings under spectral view (you can also set the frequency res there, but it doesn't refresh the spectral view until you click OK, so the shortcut is the better way). Lastly you can scroll over the frequency scale to the right of the display to zoom in and maybe use a parametric EQ or notch filter to just filter out the frequency you need instead of a broad range with a graph eq. If you activate the preview you can see right away, if what you need is gone.
Still your audio sounds perfectly fine to me and probably everyone else, so your usual editing is definitely more efficient :D
(Sorry for strange/sloppy translations, I don't use the program in english, so I don't know the original terms it uses.)
Adobe Premiere Pro has a spectrum analyzer seperate from any audio effects and a spectrum analyzer in the Graphic Equalizer, so, if you know how to read the spectrum properly, you can get away with that perfectly well.
I've watched all your videos, even some of the *really* old ones. I've never left a comment once. This was super interesting and really well presented. Really enjoyed it. In fact, I'm only half way through it and wanted to leave a note of appreciation. Such a good video.
Thank you for mentioning high frequency noises, as someone who can ear a lot of high frequency sounds and is constantly bombarded with them I really appreciate that you take some time to reduce them!
Planet X3!
Awesome video! The first thing I learned was... Get a camera.
I put this in watch later because I will be referring to it for a long time.
Thank you!
*_"I really like these polarizers. I use them for absolutely every shot."_*
Yea that explains why your glasses look like they don't have lenses. I mean, I get that you also have AR coating, but AR isn't THAT good.
I'd think the visual warping around my eyes make the lenses rather apparent ;)
But yeah, polarizer certainly helps eliminate some of the glare!
I'm a lab tech in an opticians, have been for a few years now and I can't NOT look at people's glasses these days- what kind of prescription are you rocking? High astimatism?
@@LGR It's true. You can see them if you look closely. I'm just saying the polarizer gives the effect that you don't even have lenses at first.
I worked at a lenscrafters a long time ago. Maybe that's why I noticed this detail.
And now I’ll notice that forever.
@@FuzzballRenakitty Very high, yes, skewed heavily in my right eye. As a result I pretty much only use my left!
This is incredible - you just watch a beautiful video and absolutely do not realize what kind of work was done to make the picture look so ... what it is! There are so many little things that are not noticeable individually, but as a whole they give a visible effect. Real art!
Thanks for the informative video!
Hey LGR, I just found out about your channel like 1 week ago and I am stuck since. I just want to thank you for all the effort you're putting in your video's, I really enjoy watching them all. I've learned so much about the old computers and oddwares. I am 26 years old and I do remember some of it, which brings back memories. Thanks dude! And keep up the great work

OMG, Johnny Castaway (Screen Antics) I sooo forgot about that! Thanks for reminding, HUGE nostalgia buzz XX
Always wanted to see this topic
I love this channel and how you still think of new content ideas for videos, and make these things immensely interesting.
I'm always learning something new from your videos and I'm impressed by your vast amounts of knowledge. Love these videos, and the fact that you offer engaging, charming, fun reviews without resorting to swearing to keep one's attention. I've got nothing wise to contribute but I will say that I've seen that exact same parrot sticker you have on that monitor on a monitor at work -- how random. Thanks for all your hard work!
Everything is so beige at your place 🤭. Kinda dig it!
and WOOD
I guess I'm officially getting old. I can't hear the monitor sound anymore.
Just old, brother, not _getting_ !
😅
I don't think I've ever heard a CRT whine. It could be due to the fact that I have a seemingly genetic form of tinnitus and the frequency may match that of the CRT.
Ethos711 I’m 24, and I can only just detect it is there. I know how you feel.
In my 30's, i still use a tube monitor (because there's no better quality for color coding) on one of my computers, i hear it. Wish i didn't.
He's like "i'm removing the audio filter now" ... yea, i still hear nothing lol
OMG I had that screensaver Clint, I took a day sickleave to watch it, he finally got rescued, got drunk celebrating and....fell off the boat and got washed up on an island. Those were the days when screensavers were brilliant, the Budweiser frogs another brilliant interactive screen. Here's an idea for a small segment show. Cheers my son, great as usual, keep up the good work from an old bloke across the pond.
Clint is the man, so many people would never share those trade secrets, especially when they're so good at it!
Haha that good old johnny castaway screen saver sure brings back a lot of memories.
Top stuff Clint!
I guess I always took for granted how well your videos looked. Your professionalism, production quality, along with the interesting content is what kept me coming back. Thank you for all the hard work sir and years of entertainment!
It doesn't surprise me that you put in this level of detailed work on your videos, because they always look great, better than most channels that show crt related content. Thanks for the glimpse behind the scenes.
For the crt noises you could record the room tone from your mic, just standing in there silent. for few seconds then loop it in post and inverse the audio, thats what us audio post we do. Like that by decreasing the volume you can bring back some noise as well.
Otherwise iZotope RX can save your life for bad situations
Fridays with LGR videos. Time to relax baby.
These shots of Clint with the old white/beige CRTs showing such crispy images in the background are aesthetic AF, and make all this tinkering worth it.
I love this type of behind the scenes video. You put in so much effort that goes mostly unnoticed. Thank you for your service.
I’ve always had really good hearing when it comes higher frequency ranges... Back when people had CRT TVs, I could hear when the neighbors had their TV on even if the actual speaker sounds didn’t carry through the walls. There’s something odd about that CRT pitch.
You’ve got good ears, I couldn’t hear any difference lol….or maybe its just my iPad…idk
Hot stuff as always Clint!
Seeing your shelves of games like mine reminds me of the good old days of the 1990s inside Software Etc and Electronics Boutique. You do a LOT more work than I ever knew.
It is greatly appreciated that you filter out the CRT whine!
For me it was one of the best days when we replaced the main TV with a LCD.
16:34 I have tinnitus; I don't hear CRT 'whine'.
17:44 Most people cannot easily perceive higher than 24 KHz, though it's not impossible. I can hear 20 kHz, though it's not something that I'll notice unless I hear nothing else...
I remember taking pictures of Classic Concentration back when I had a Polaroid camera (DON'T SHAKE THE DAMN PHOTOS!!!) and a Tandy 1000. I ruined them because of that damned moiré pattern and the half-opened window glinting in 1 PM partly cloudy sunlight, but I still wish I had them because dammit, I loved the T1000...
And I loved Polaroid... #RetroJunkie
Thanks again for an AWESOME VIDEO!!!!
Shows again how much work and effort actually goes into these videos. It looks so easy, but is actually really tricky to achieve. Good work, Clint.
You do a great job. I tried imagining watching one of your videos without the hard work you put in; I'll simply say, thanks for doing what you do.
I don't think the L in LGR really applies anymore.
GR doesnt have the same ring as LGR. It needs to be a three letter acronym.

The l stands for legend.
I love that you are focusing on those tiny details 👍 makes me a proud subscriber to quality content (not much laziness left in those reviews, huh? 🤣)
Man, that screensaver brings back the memories.. I used to watch his antics and loved it.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge of this stuff. Especially helpful was the part on equalizing out CRT whine. It never would have occurred to me to do that as I can no longer hear those frequencies!

Holy shit! That 15khz is torture! Bless you for filtering it out. I'm almost 30 but I can still hear that.

What a love for detail and quality! I never noticed that you mask and grade stuff or that you use sound filters. Great effort, great job!
Thanks so much for this video Clint! Not only is it fascinating in it's own right, it will make me appreciate the quality job that you do capturing CRT displays so much more. It's really cool to see some of the insights into your production. Your videos have always been good production quality, but with the latest intro change I've noticed they have gotten even better. Keep up the good work!
I've been following you for a good while and it's great to see what a long way your production quality has come. The cameras play a big part, but your editing has also become incredibly professional. :)

Had that on my pc i used as a kid. used to spend ten minutes waiting for the screensaver to start to see what he would do.
I'm still running it. It doesn't play well with triple monitor setups sadly..
I like how much moire was on your jacket in the section where talk about moire. :P
and the speakers!
Great advice mate!
I remember when I got my PSX and started using CRTs again, fun times for me and not so much for my family ;)
One thing that threw me off guard was the fact that my dad (he was 41 at the time) could still hear the sound that that CRT made!
Then I learned that CRTs get louder with time, but slightly quieter when they warm up.
Anyway, helpful video
Awesome video once again Clint! Dang! CRT Monitors give them nostalgia vibes all over! Anyway, looking forward to the next one bro'! More power and God bless from the Philippines!
Not that I'd ever recommend it, given that I always say to keep things lossless until the end, but lower quality transcodes (720p and lower iirc) won't have the 15khz whine, as the AAC audio at 96kbps and lower cuts those frequencies off automatically, so you COULD get super lazy about it and just use 96kbps, buuuut I'd rather people didn't.
Yeah I could never let myself do that, heh. I'd rather remember to use a notch filter and call it a day!
I'm seeing more videos talking about CRT monitors
