Well, we were about to purchase 28 of their printers for a classroom situation, this is a deal breaker for us. Thank you for saving us a very expensive mistake.
Imagine you're a grown adult, you buy yourself a PC, TV, Printer or basically anything. But to use your device in your own house which you have paid for with your own money you have to go and call your dad to ask for permission.
Such updates are probably to allow the company and regulators to inspect whatever the user is making with the 3D printers and ensure the object is "legal".
Imagine you buy the house but then you find that the front door lock requires you to pay a subscription fee, or you can't get in. And you can't replace the lock because you "agreed" in the EULA you waived that right. Oh and they charge you 10x the price of the lock, to change the 'licensee' from the previous owner to you. You know, just because they can.
Add cars with a subscription model, you need to pay for the use of features of the car you already paid for. Buy something, don't own it, and keep paying for it.
@@animejanai4657don't give a shit. They aren't allowed to come in my house and check my closers for no reason to make sure I don't have anything illegal in there. Screw them. If they are sooo scared of people being such a bad boy with their printers then don't make and sell any printers. OR say you have to use their software in order for them to keep an eye on you because you are a child who may do something bad BEFORE you sell them the printer. If they said this from the onset, then it's no big deal. But they know many would never buy it. There has to be some law for the consumer. If everyone just not download the update and let Bambu brick millions of printers. Then everyone returns their broken printers for a refund. If a couple do this Bambu will say "fuck off". But if a million people did, they would have a huge problem on their hands.
Fun fact. In Australia, under Australian Consumer Laws, everyone with an affected printer is entitled to a full refund ;) Ask Valve what happens when you don't adhere to it :D (they were fined 2 million dollars and had to change their refund policy in Australia for games with more than 2 hours played) If they change the product AFTER the sale, FULL REFUND.
They're not changing their product, only the support offered to it, as they will argue. Good luck being the landmark case that sets the precedent, as much as I want to see companies getting effed for this behaviour it ain't gonna happen in this instance 😢
@@krazed0451 They are changing the product. They removed the ability to use it offline and removed the ability to connect to it using third party software. Thats 2 huge changes to basic functionality of a printer.

Ugggh. I came THIS CLOSE to buying a Bambu Lab printer. I held off because someone told me their printers were already dangerously close to being proprietary. Now I'm glad I waited.
I was 2 days away of buying about 3000 USD when I saw the first videos today in the morning… surprisingly this is the first English video, the ones that published first were an Argentinian and a Spanish.
This is likely because they want a backdoor in the systems so they can see who is printing gun receivers. Just in time for the "freedom" president to take charge!
Fabulous channel. I really appreciate the way you feel about how manufacturers are treating their customers. I may have missed something though. This was created by a very brilliant individual. This guy is not the only guy tapping keys. There has to be many more brilliant individuals out there that are able to undue what has been done. Now granted it may take time to come in from the back door to crack this firewall so to speak. The community needs to band together and find a work around to this issue. This is how this all began in the beginning, it seems though now that these devices have been more reliable we have forgotten the community that originally got these printers here today. If they want to brick our tech gut the software and jailbreak the things so they work the way they have been intended! Please continue to be precise and unwavering on your channel. The cat has the same attitude love it!
Like if one would be lucky to have a machine that works well for a long time, they could now stop this whenever they want, so you need to buy another machine when they decide you used one for too long.
This is why all known Bambu Lab IP addresses should be entered into your firewall and antivirus to be blocked. Just in case more phone home connections are done to restrict your PC.
Thanks Louis, you are just in time! We are cancelling consideration for Bambu Labs products for our 3D printer services lab. Thanks for the documentation!
I’ve been printing for 5 years , started out on an ender printer and had so many issues , tolerances were off randomly , very touchy printer , I bought the Bambu lab x1c because I needed to be able to hit print , and not worry if I was going to have a failure . But I will 100% go back to a different printer to not be controlled. Thank you for shedding light to your platform about this!
It’s clear that while Louis isn’t as informed on the intricacies of the 3D printers market as he is on computers, he absolutely understands when a company is screwing their customers over. Thanks for making this video Louis! It’s great to see the wiki get some usage. Well, not great for those affected by Bambu, but you know what I meant
If Louis is as informed on intricacies of the computers as he is on 3D printers according to this video, then we should be more sceptical about everything he says about computers, because this video is demonstrably wrong.
This is the power of the consumer protection wiki wiki.rossmanngroup.com/wiki/Bambu_Lab_Authorization_Control_System A world where consumers can be made aware before they buy of whether or not a particular company fucks over their users. I dream that a day comes where companies make decisions based on not being included in this wiki.

I have a 3d print farm with over 60 printers. I'm currently in the process of updating it with modern printers and opted for the Bambu for a variety of reasons: It's quick change nozzles to quickly get back and running from clogs. Their incredible vibration compensation. The ability to easily manage dozens of print jobs at once from a computer. To say I'm disappointed by this news would be a massive understatement.
@@Evirthewarrior I'm updating from old Makerbot Replicator 2's. I ran those machine into the ground. Bambus were a genuine lightyear leap for me and I was loving them so much. I'm not sure what I will do now. I restructured my entire print farm to accommodate them and it's not easy to just switch machines.
@@BSquaredMfg if you're using X1s or X1Cs, you could look into X1Plus firmware, which won't ever be updated with this nonsense. For everything else it'll unfortunately just be a case of preventing the printers from updating and hoping someone comes up with a good workaround or firmware replacement.
_"Their incredible vibration compensation."_ this can be achieved on any properly build printer running Klipper firmware. Knowledge & fundamentals understanding is the must of course. But there is nothing "proprietary" in the Bambylab hype. They just snatched all the code from open source including their pressure advance tracker. That's why they've reached technological ceiling so quick because they've never had their own self sufficient R&D base and they totally rely on open source development progress.
Oh my god thank you for releasing these videos since my childhood. A couple months back I was deciding on my first 3D printer and when I came to the crossroads between Bambu and Creality, I got the Creality one because it is open-source. I dodged a Bambu shaped bullet thanks to your education on open-source.
Bambu is foolish, the 3D printing community is probably the most low-level-hands-on group of hackers that there is around. This will result in bambu to have their firmware source "leaked"
While I do think they are foolish, there's a large segment of untapped consumers that don't want to do with anything low-level. They want something they pull out of the box, peel all the plastic off of, install a driver and click print. Doesn't justify this BS, of course.
I mean untapped is not entirely accurate. This was the entire market that Prusa and Ultimaker focussed on. Bambu somehow managed to do it a lot cheaper (and I think we are about to find out how they did that)
I was looking at buying a Bamboo printer tonight, after watching this, it made it an easy decision to go for a different brand. Thanks for the great video, you've saved me from wasting my money.
It continuously astounds me that it's legal for a manufacturer to remove functionality of products after it has been sold. If it's sold as a cloud/subscription based service out of the box, you roll the dice on how long that service will be up, but under no circumstances should they be allowed to remove or degrade features while the service is still live. If it's initially sold as a device with offline capabilities, it's utterly insane that they can be disallowed after a sale. Even if there are no specific laws related to it, it should at least be covered by fraud laws.
No one who has a Bambu printer should sell their printer. What they should do is send it back to Bambu and demand a full refund. What they're doing is changing the basic operation of the product after the sale, which means they defrauded you when you bought it.

Glad to see you're covering this issue with Bambu printers. They exploded on the market recently with their rather good printers, but people were wary of them because of their weird proprietary parts and software in a space that was inherently open-source. The worst thing that can happen with 3D printers is them going the way of regular printers. Currently have a few Creality Enders myself, and though Creality might have its own issues, the printers are completely offline and void of any cloud system. Can't brick that.
@@cyclopsvision6370 They're already doing that in case you didn't know. It's been used for automatic identification of the spools instead of having to set it in the software manually. Perhaps another firmware update is coming in the future that will _protect the consumer_ from these insecure third-party spools.
3d printer enthusiast here, what's funny is there was videos made when bambu labs first launched sharing concerns about how their software wasn't open source, whereas every other 3d printer was open source, and now their concerns are coming to light!
So what printer would you recommend for someone who would have otherwise gotten a Bambu? Meaning speed, quality and plug-and-play are the main concerns?
@@Klaevin there aren't any at their price, That's why they're trying this now. You can spend more if you want, you can sacrifice plug-and-play... Or you can give bambu this horrible stranglehold on the printer.
@ They tried to be apple, make their product 'just work' without the apple price tag. It was always 'too good to be true', so i'd suggest prusa, but whichever you get you'd need to learn to tinker. You'd need to learn to tinker with bambulabs too, but they claim it will be less often.
Thank you! I was to buy a new printer next year. I'll now pay a close attention to update scheme and rule out all printers that can be updated automatically or unintentionally.
They "inspect" every model in their cloud for you not to print naughty stuff.. Your ip right to any parts will be violated by then if you wish so buy and go ahead 🎉
I've already noticed that most professional manufacturers don't use them. It's mainly RUclips brainrot content creators who like to wow audiences with SUPER LIGHTNING FAST PRINT SPEEDS.
I Said it since bambu came on the market, "i will never ever own a bambu!" so glad i stuck to it. Fuxxxing garbage.. I recommend sovol printers. I have 4 of them, they just work! at a fraction of the cost of a bambu shit show.
What you're saying makes no sense, you are complaning about vendor improving security of the cloud that you are not forced to use? Stay offline then, Bambu made it easier with the past firmware updates, nobody is forcing you online at all.
Me either, I panic bought back in June or July of last year and heard you can send it back as long as you didn't open it, but now I'm really considering sending it back. I love what Bambu Labs did for the 3d printing community.....but this is some bullshit!!! 👎👎👎
Thank you for posting this video! I have been looking at various printers and was leaning toward one of two Bambu products. My next step was to look into the relationship the company has with its customers.
As someone that's only owned and used an open source 3d printer, I absolutely saw all of this coming. I've spent the past few years telling friends that Bambu would start locking down their products like this. I prefer my own open source hardware as it give me access to modify and expand at my own free will. I've even been looking into building another new 3d printer from scratch as I've modified my existing printer. While the open source and DIY printers can be more difficult to get going without experience, that experience is exactly what a user would need to later service or upgrade their own printer, and I think is far more valuable than whatever you're getting for the extra buck you're spending on a turnkey solution.
I have the same history, I have three scratch built three printers after starting with an A8, but when the mini was priced lower that the cost of its parts I got one I was blown away by the performance, I've never connected it to the network, not even enabled LAN mode, I had planned on getting more - but this killed that for now, my new project will be developing an open source jail break for the Mini.
That's wrong. A Bambu works out of the box and sure, you have to do maintenance, but it's nowhere near a Prusa MK3S or Voron... I've built and used both and some more printers with upgrades... Further, the app is fantastic compared to all other brands. With a Bambu and the app, there are so many people who don't have to use a slicer and can just print. If you like coffee, just make coffee with a tap on your smartphone and don't waste time building a coffee machine from scratch, calibrate it and hope it's not tea... There's no problem if you love building and maintaining open source machines. I'd like to build another Voron, too. But I don't want to use the Voron. I don't want to waste more time as needed if I just want to print. If it's your hobby, fine. That's why so many people love the Bambus, people not being able to build such a machine nor doing real maintenance except cleaning. Is Bambu now doing great? Hell, no. Will I buy another one if mine is dead? I don't know, maybe building another Voron (and sell it and buy Bambu again). If they cut things they did marketing with, I will discuss of returning it.
I mean you really didn't have to be clairvoyant to see what the end game was. I keyed in on it when I started looking for a new printer a few years back and every video was all about "just how convenient it is" The road to hell isn't paved with good intentions. Its paved with the promises of convenience. Ill stick with my ender 3 till I decide to build a Voron.
There are good printers out there where even if the manufacturer would want to, they would not be able to pull this scam because the firmware is open source.
I was thinking for a while about uprading to either prusa or bambu. Luckily i was not ina a hurry and haven't bought anything yet. Bambu was very tempting but i felt it in my bones that something like this is going to happen
Just a note, if you have a Bambu printer and live in Australia, REMEMBER : It is illegal to change product terms after the sale. If the product terms are changed the consumer is entitled to a full refund of original purchase price PLUS expenses. So that would include Bambu having to refund the price of other accessories you purchased for the printer, even off other suppliers...
@@yannickdevos6021Unfortunately SOME countries... not pointing fingers... Allows those corporations to pay their politicians to not implement such laws and regulations.
Illegal to change the terms after the sale? Doubt that applies when it is governments demanding the changes. I am almost CERTAIN that part of this change is government demands that 3D printers be banned by the manufacturer from printing certain "UNAUTHORIZED" items that are extra disallowed in Australia.
I’m so glad this came up. I’ve been waiting too long to jump on the 3D printer train and finally decide to make the plunge. I liked the Bambu line and decided to go that way. The only thing I was waiting for was until after I move next month. Very few devices in my home have access to the outside world and I intend to keep it that way.
Time to rip out that main board and make it work with a Duet. I'm seriously considering changing my plans for this year's projects, start modifying my X1C and share this with the community.

For another 3D printer, HeyGears's Reflex RS has similar issues with being closed source. Not as much of a risk as Bambu, BUT you have to connect to use the basic feature. So glad I went with an open-source, Klipper-based machine for my first 3D printer. I had almost bought a Bambu, and instead got a Qidi. After the recent news I'm very happy about my decision.
I was poised to go Qidi and went Bambu instead, because it wasn't clear if the Q1 pro will be able to work with the Qidi multicolour system coming. Damn it man, I love the printer, it works flawlessly, but I hate this shit
@@tagg8233 originally I was gonna buy a P1S which is $700 in Canada, $1000 with AMS, whereas the Qidi Plus 4 is $1200 here. But then the P4 was discounted to $800 during the holiday sales so I went for it. I was still considering a large format Bambu later on if they made a bigger model, but after all this recent news there's no way I'd buy one now. Qidi has had some quality/design issues and growing pains with their printers, but they've put in effort to fix stuff, and they send the fixed/updated parts to customers no problem. Given their customer service and support I'll probably stick with them for future printers. Another issue I had with Bambu, before the news, is that there seems to be a design problem with the A1 series, they get the "blob of death" too often and from a weird spot in the hotend. People in the Bambu groups and forums always blame the user, but when you look closer, the blobs happen differently than with most printers. It also doesn't happen the same way on the other Bambu models, just the A series. A small number of people have stated there's a problem with screws and the feeding tube, but it keeps getting swept under a rug.. Seems like Bambu doesn't properly address stuff if they mess it up.
They made sure to wait until after everyone opened their new printers for Christmas to make this change. The printer is fantastic, its a sad state of affairs. A lot of the competition comes with a lot of problems or tinkering. Creality Hi Combo is suspiciously similar to an A1, and coming out soon, might be a good place to go for beginner printers.

My son just got one for Christmas to create parts for his robotics labs. I can’t believe they would do this right after receiving the printer for Christmas.
Bigger timing issue - This is on the leading edge of the rumors of a new bigger printer. Frankly Built and other channels have said hints like "just a little longer"... "coming soon"... - They did this before the surge of bigger printers hit the market.
My god let's not go for creality when running from Bambulab, creality are such incompetent idiots. The only reason creality doesn't have a subscription yet is because they cannot bother to figure it out before someone else does it, they will copy every single idea from anyone, and do it worse and with worse quality control. Much love to Mr. Clinton, may his further life be as pain-free as possible.
No, this is the simplest case, they don't care about your gun prototype. They care about collecting "what people are working on" en masse, which reflects the market trends, business practices and startups. You also feed this data to AI to better predict the strengths and weaknesses of a company. The AI war is on, and the soldiers are Trojan Horse products to steal data from you and monitor what you are doing at home. Even you printing something is an indication of whether you are still at your home or not, think big!
This has nothing at all to do with big brother control. This is corporate greed. The two are at odds with each other, not on the same side. Although their desire to screw over the consumer often aligns.
Glad I found this out right now! I literally was ordering one this weekend. Bambu Lab is no longer an option for me if this is the direction they are going. Everybody told me I should have bought a bamboo labs printer instead of a prusa. I told people that they need to build a good track record for support before I would trust bamboo labs. I guess I made the right decision.
Yeah, I had largely the same reasoning for building a Voron 2.4 instead of buying an X1C. I didn't feel comfortable in buying a machine that was closed source by design and has a relatively unproven track record for longevity - even considering how good the out-of-box performance is.

I had a similar issue with Creality cloud - thanks to the software being opensource - there is a wonderful community firmware that has massively improved the connectivity to this printer.
I was immediately suspicious when RUclips essentially forgot other 3d printers existed. Flood the market and then change the terms. Sounds like the plan all along
They clearly did a huge push marketing the printers and for MakerWorld exclusives to lock in as much of the new market as possible as quickly as possible. It feels very "move fast and break things" with the predatory pricing, and they've explicitly compared themselves to Apple so best-case scenario for their goal is probably to become the dominant closed ecosystem people get trapped in and they get to gradually raise their prices and lower their standards. But because people seem to like the product (presumably because it copied the best of open hardware lol) it feels like talking to a brick wall when you point out that this would be a bad thing. It's exasperating. I wish tech communities weren't so short-sighted and willfully ignorant about the politics of this stuff. That and we DO still need to make stuff easier for noobs or the big companies are gonna do it first.
The Bambu Labs hype was insane in the last few years. Friends recommended them to me, I came dangerously close to buying a P1S because it seemed like a no-brainer. But I got an Elegoo Neptune 3 Pro instead for 1/4 the price and turns out THAT was the no-brainer purchase!
I'm glad you brought this up. I've been in the 3d print space for four or five years now. Starting about a year ago, Bambu were the only printers I was being fed by the algorithm. Typically they were sponsored product placements or reviews of their products and I had to start going out of my way to find content on other printer lines. While I thought it was weird, I figured it was just because Bambu makes plug and play printers that look slick and they were just popular among the consumer masses. Now... I'm not so sure it wasn't a coordinated effort.
@@saulgoodman2018 I assume it's sponsor dollars even if they're not directly coordinating with youtube for preference in the algorithm. If you drop money on a ton of 3d print channels to have them repeating your product names and you're running ads for your products, you're going to sway the algorithm in your favor through sheer volume. The algorithm is just gonna say "wow, lot of people talking about Bambu, people must love it, better push more of those videos!"
I love that anyone who bought that weak excuse is not mad that they have been continually and knowingly selling incredibly vulnerable devices exposing their users to significant risks for years... And meanwhile all prints sent to the printer get sent to their Chinese servers first... Totally privacy and security first. 😂🤡
The privacy is the part that makes me laugh the hardest. You surely don't get 'printer-level logins' (like, just using a MAC address for 'authentication'), you must be required to set up 'Use your email address' accounts with verification (which they will store your data for in an open database server instance on the open web and then look surprised when their whole database turns up on the Dark Web) to be able to authorize printers...so now they can link 'who you are, how many printers you have, how you use them, WHAT YOU PRINT (but try not to feel awkward 3D-printing that new Bad Dragon attachment for the girlfriend!)', and they even get to peep into your house with environmental sensors (surely polled for 'failure analysis data', not just to snoop!) and your cameras. Do they happen to have microphones too? That seems to be all that is missing! I mean, if they get all that data bounced off of them then they can tell when you are HOME or not by having two or more printers since their vibration sensors will be able to analyze your FOOTSTEPS. Don't believe me? Set up a test using any smartphone with a gyro. Read for maximum accuracy...walk PAST the room. Note the impacts peaking at the speed of your steps. One of my phones is so sensitive that I can lay on my chest onto a table and if my phone is within 4' of me, the gyroscope sensor/accelerometer in it can catch my HEARTBEAT as it reverberates out of my CHEST and through the table! It can't troubleshoot my heart from 4' away, but just the fact that that is at ALL a thing should help bring home how insane this can be if turned on us. Two or three printers will be able to tell when you walk past them. They could LITERALLY tell the Chinese (or whoever got into their database server since it's almost-surely open like EVERY corporation seems to do of late!) if you were home or not...hope you're not a dissident; they'll know when they can pop by to set up sensors in your house, or swap stuff around, or plant evidence, or whatever...seriously, they were kidnapping Americans IN AMERICA with their "secret Chinese Police Stations" in several major metropolitan areas to keep dissidents from 'getting too out of hand'. Of course, the only reason "The printer has so many sensors!" would be an issue is because they are relaying everything to China, and we're no longer in control of most of it. I'll hope they reverse course, but I won't hold my breath that they will.
This actually works out for me. I've been trying to decide between Bambu Labs and Prusa, and that indecision is now over. I'll go with the company that treats it's customers right.
I have prusa MK3, cetus, voron and anycubic. Prusa has 6 years ols and still the prints are the best quality and I had only one problem with that printer when I wanted to print flex material. A whole six years of trouble-free operation and as you print on prusa materials the default settings work perfectly. If you want to enjoy printing then choose prusa. If you want to enjoy the fun of repairing and setting up the printer then choose the voron. Cetus is the worst but have one profit: small size.
Same. Have an x1c in my cart atm. So glad I had to poop before going down to get my wallet. Google bambu problems and this popped up. Saved my ass and probably my marriage.
Wow, thank-you so much, I was just researching my choice of printers and this popped up, no bloody way am I buying one now, feel so bad for current users.
I've been dipping my toes in 3D printing for about 18 months now. My end goal was to buy a Bambu printer once I felt I got everything out of my two Enders. I was pretty close to doing it. I will now look for other alternatives. Thanks for the video Louis.
Check out the Prusa CORE One video from Prusa 3D. They never mention Bambu but are obviously going over Prusa features that address issues people have had with Bambu.
you could always convert your enders to corexy.... my ender 3 neo became an e3ng (though other projects also exist) & my ender 3 v2 is about to get a custom corexz conversion (not enderwire, but similar without the enclosure or body kit). you'll be seriously upgrading your capabilities while simultaneously getting away from both creality & bambu, both of whom can't seem to figure out how to take care of their customers.
I have always rejected Bambu because I got a bad smell from their cloud integration. I want printers that I can fully control the firmware on. I ended up with a Creality K1, it does have an official rooting method and of course first thing I did was root the printer and block firmware updates. I heard around a year ago that the Bambu printers require cloud access and limit local control. Very glad I did my research! This sorta stuff is only the first step for things like, say, AI deciding you are printing something that could be a used as a weapon. It always starts with "for your safety!" All it takes is for someone in the right position to "declare" whatever they want as a "threat" and suddenly that seemingly innocuous reasoning allows censorship and wresting control from users.
Same here, thought about a Bambu P1S but went with a K1 Max then later the K2 plus. I'm happy with them, I've got them on a separate VLAN isolated from the internet, and the K2 plus even has fluidd preinstalled on the printer, no root script necessary.
@@riba2233 What's wrong with it? The original version had issues but the newer extruder and hotend reportedly solve them and look to soon be available in a bundle with the CFS kit when it launches.
You go into the settings menu on the K1's built in screen and select the root option. Then to actually add things you can use an ssh program on your pc or phone to connect to the printer. It's easier than it sounds and there are even helper scripts that you download on to the machine and then run just by copying commands into the ssh program. From there you have a full menu of options. It took me about five minutes.
I got one just under a month a go for chrismas. Imagine what im feeling lol. I had bee thinking about it for YEARS. and after lots of research for the best beginner friendly and cheap one , I landed on the P1S. idk what to do
@@pvic6959you can still print through LAN. You don’t have to install any updates and can still use orca slicer. This sucks but I don’t think Bambu labs is gonna do anything like making their printers subscription based.
@@pvic6959 Good luck! It's a bit annoying this happened but if we all make a big noise and maybe even refund and give bad reviews it will teach other companies to not do this and they will backtrack. My cousin had planned to start a 3-d printer shop, fully kitted out with Bambu Labs 3-d printers. He was looking at 20 printers to start, expanding to 60 over two years (depending on demand, that number could have been a lot higher) so I have sent him your video, Louis. Thank you for what you do. He replied with some expletives. Now he needs to look at different equipment, delaying the opening of his shop. This sort of thing is how small businesses can be bankrupt before they even get the chance to open! At least this happened before he opened the shop, but it is still a pain to have to completely change plans to accommodate greedy companies.
Your cousin should do a lot more research before trying to build a business on 3D printing. Sales of 3D printers reached $20.37 billion in 2023, but revenue generated by 3D printing was only a bit over $4 billion. While a few people are making money in this space (mainly by printing their proprietary products), most are losing money.
Their taking of user info is nothing new, so if he was planning to work with something sensitive he had to do that offline from the start, which is not impacted by this. On the other hand, unlike 1-2 years ago when he didn't have other realistic choices, now he at least has (Qidi 4 plus, Creality K2 plus, Prussa Core One etc..., with many more comming, and choosing one of those may turn out to be a better choice overall even without this issue
@@gaiustacitus4242 Comparing sales of printers to sales of prints doesn't mean 'people are losing money', because most people don't buy printers to run a business selling 3D printed items. I don't know where you got your figures from, but $4billion would be a pretty significant sales revenue considering it's supposedly generated from a minority of owners who actually run a shop selling prints.
Bambu has been running very shady practices since long before this. The AGPL violation of using a closed-source network plug-in after forking Prusa/Slic3r's slicer, along with it's encrypted network logs, were more than just a red flag, but a steaming pile of cow 💩. On this note, can we get a round of praise for Prusa right now? Yes, their products "feel" overpriced compared to Bambu's, but it's because of their massive dedication to ethical practices like open-sourcing _basically everything_, locking down *nothing*, and EAGERLY following EU labor and privacy laws. They really go above and beyond, and they have for years. As far as I'm concerned, they're everything @LouisRossmann asks for from a firm.
The good thing with 3D printers compared to most products is 1. They have an open source heritage 2. a good section of their user base are geeks who are engaged with this sort of issue 3. RUclipsrs who care about openness, the right to hack, the right to repair etc have a huge amount of power (everyone looks to trusted YT creators like makers muse to evaluate printers) ...all of which means that enough pressure can be put on manufacturers to back-down from this sort of thing. But the fact that it can be done, doesn't mean it inevitably will every time. People have to fight for it to happen. This is why you need cloud authentication taken out of the products completely, because when it's in there, they can use it to leverage more controls. The same goes for automatic updates.
Sadly, this is not the case. Firstly, the term is "free", not "open source". Freedom is what we care about, open source is just a corporate cancer attempting (somewhat successfully) to infest the idea. It is important to understand the difference, otherwise we'll keep failing for this bambu shit. Secondly, sadly not the case. Actual geeks do exist, be the majority are not. They may pretend to be ones, but they are not. Lastly, youtubers who care about freedom are few and remain mostly unknown, while those who are somewhat popular are but corporate shills, not caring about freedom a single bit. This is why this chinese rubbish got so popular. If just a single popular youtuber raised a flag, but they didn't. Neither did they when creality was violating RepRap license until they were forced to make some changes by being threatened with a possible legal action. Neither did they when e3d went proprietary. Neither did they when prusa was publishing his customers private data or integrating spyware into his software. Neither did they every single fucking time when such shit happened. Nor do they nowadays. Because they don't care.
Thank you for talking about this. I own a bambu printer and haven't seen a single 3d printing youtuber I subscribe to talk about this yet. I was able to look up how to enable lan-only mode on my printer by disabling my home wifi before booting it up, and now I can simply avoid this update and go completely 3rd party; replacement parts, filament, software, 3d print file platforms, etc. Bambu can go fuck itself. This is like taking your car to the dealership for the free service 1 year after purchase, and getting a new software installed on the car that prevents you from getting future service, oil changes, filters, parts, etc anywhere but the dealership. Fuck that shit. They've lost every future penny I'll spend on 3d printing.
RUclipsrs advertising the Bambu printers take part in Bambu affiliate marketing or get at least free printers for review from Bambu. Be sure their new machines are already shipped to the reviewers now or very soon. You can't kill the company paying direct or indirect for your meals.
Thank you very much for this information!!! Currently I have 9 3D printers of various makes and models and I have been printing for over a decade now. Up until this point I have just been watching Bambu Lab with curiosity to see where their proprietary push was going. I was actually planning to order the A1 mini this week to test out and even recommended it to a coworker. However, in light of this information there is no way in hell that I will purchase or recommend a product from Bambu Lab. There are so many 3D printer options on the market that Bambu Lab isn't needed.
which one of your printers would you say is the most "plug and play" with the least tinkering needed? id be glad to know please. i liked the bambu p1s because it was the closest to just plugging it in and setting up.
My state has been trying that for 7 years (maybe 9 now? Time flies) As well as still trying to ban Grand-TA 5. Everytime there is a "event" they blame printers, videogames, and music. As if this was still the 1980s.
Thanks for the video. I was looking into getting a bamboo 3D printer since I’ve heard so many people speak highly of them. I totally agree they are getting ready to follow HP in forcing you to pay for a subscription for your device to work.
@@mrjamesinblogington I've been very happy with my MK3S (now MK3S+) that I bought in Jan 2020. It's still going strong and I plan on ordering the Core One Kit as soon as it's available.
Timely update. I manage an IoT lab with several member companies and we were looking to add a new 3d printer. Was looking at a prusa or a bambu. Was already leaning toward prusa, but this automatically axes bambu from the decision.
You sir, are a CHAMPION. You’re at least as seething and rage-filled as i am about this world and its diabolical mechanisms of greed. I am a new subscriber (shouts matt brown), but i will be working backward though your videos, liking every single one. 🙏🏻 Thankyou for swearing.
On a couple of occasions I've questioned my decision to create my print farm using Prusa (more expensive, more finicky with the newer models). I no longer regret or question said decision. 😊
I am smugly looking over at the Prusa MK4 to the right of me. I was telling people on random videos for ages that this would happen. Before anyone says anything, this isn't like another one of those 'you bought something cheap you deserve it' things. Prusa explicitly and repeatedly state their commitments to privacy and freedom to use the printer in any way you wish. Their firmware is totally open source. They facilitate custom firmware installs too. I've never connected my printer to the internet and probably never will. I told many people that Bambu was enticing people with heavily subsidised/undercut hardware in order to trap them later on. Sorry, but this is the playbook for many Chinese companies operating in the west whether you like it or not. Prusa themselves, being made in the Czech Republic, have had their marketshare eaten into by Bambu Lab. I'm glad I supported the company that, at least by all appearances and metrics, cares about user freedom.
Yeah. I also have MK4. I've heard from someone why I'm buying an overpriced bedslinger if there's a much better Bambu. Well, that's why :). Also I've ordered Prusa CORE One in December.
@@yawor I heard the same kinds of thing man. All the while I knew what would happen down the road because it always does. Proprietary firmware from the start means a problem that will come down the road, compounding that is the fact they're clearly selling heavily subsidised hardware. It was the Trojan horse, as now we see that even in LAN mode, they're going to brick your printer if they see fit. Maybe there's a timer, who knows. Nice one on the CORE One order, I hope it serves you well. I actually like my MK4 and won't be upgrading it, sometimes I want to be able to access the nozzle and other parts a lot easier. The bedslingers are obviously more open and airy and this is better in small spaces like my room. If I do find myself wanting an enclosed print chamber for future, different materials however I'll be sure to get a CORE One.
Same. MK2S owner here. Every warning about Bambu I have ever given has been ignored. It really is going to take something way worse than Windows 11 or Bambu Labs for people to realize going open source is the only way to avoid being abused. They don't care about principles. You know these people will respond with "So what it connects to the cloud? Everything connects to the cloud! You're just mad my printer is 7% faster!"
I could only find a Reddit post about this, so please do share something that could guide those who need it toward it! Edit: Well I guess Rossmann's Wiki that he promotes indeed works! On the page about this situation, there is as link to a project aiming at providing replacement hardware with FOSS! Though it is in its beta stage.
I have an X1but I was thinking of selling it for a while. I'm no modeler and haven't printed too much useful with it. Its very impressive to watch, the prints that come out of it are scientifically good... no defects period. But looks like Bambu just did a no no...
Thank you for this vid .... was just about to spend around $2k to get into 3d printing and was going to purchase a Bambu printer ... not anymore. The cloud requirement is a deal breaker for me and i don't do subscriptions.
And now we know why they were so aggressive on the discount during December. People were already calling Bambu the "Apple" of 3d printer, well now we can add the HP of 3d printing. Dodged a massive bullet by not buying from them
You are missing one of the best printers on the market. The competition is worse even at 3x the price. Only the Prusa Core One seems to get closer. I wonder if you keep them LAN mode only from the very beginning will be enough to keep it DRM free.
@@theagentsmith Newer models from other brands are as good as the Bambu printers, and nearly as easy to use. They do cost more. They also offer better support. And, as it turns out, don’t turn around and screw you after you bought one.
BAMBU should never be considered for a government contract. It was made clear from the start they were taking a hell of a lot of data they didn't need to. Any place that needs data security should avoid Bambu like the plague.
@@willrogers5913 I suppose the introduction of LAN mode is what made them an option again in many cases. But with this changed announced, it's doesn't seem like it's not something that can be relied upon.
@@willrogers5913 politicians be like that sometimes. Professor was already aware of the issue, it'll be great that the classes won't have 3D printers because, with how bureaucracy is set, you won't get budget to even repair the thing let alone set subscription to use them. Had my fair share of inventory that was unusable due to either vendor trickery or plain incompetence from buyers (got 500 computers for a place that could get 150 seats max, and we couldn't transfer excess inventory to other under equipped campuses, we ended using all 500 anyway because no spare parts or maintenance contract so we had to cannibalize the devices, took years to get a request for spares authorized). If we can stop this waste early on the better.
Yep i own a few and was about to try the x1 next, not only am i no longer going with Bambu, i pulled my few modest models (few hundred downloads but hey may as well take them down) from their site. I rely on orca and can’t fuss with using bambu’s worse slicer, waste of time for me and I also don’t agree with them providing me authorization before printing, sod off with that. I’ll prob go with qidi or prusa next, may look to sell these if they force the update I don’t have time for sd cards I print way too many small r&d prototype stuff, 50 5-10 min print jobs in a row etc.
Thank you for covering this Louis! We have we have been talking about this for so long, that they can and will do something like this and here we are. I've been digging through the dumped software and it's absolutely about control and potentially about data (in my opinion). Orca was denied access to the key system and will require a secondary software, Bambu connect (named just like Prusa Connect, I assume this is not a mistake). I'll be talking about this live on my channel tomorrow, would love to have you on as a guest one day soon to discuss this whole situation! Thanks for telling it like it is! We need more people like you in this industry. Alas when I've tried to be frank like this, we get attacked.. keep up the great work!
If users want to block communication to Bambu, they should enter the IP addresses to block into their firewall and antivirus software. The trick will be to find any obscure IP addresses that Bambu/law enforcement uses to monitor what users are creating on the 3D printer.
@@animejanai4657 The ‘firewall’ for most users is nothing more than the router provided by the network provider. In countries without free choice of router, the providers even enforce the use of their router. These routers often only have basic functions and filtering outgoing traffic is usually not part of the package. You can of course use the router as a modem and operate your own firewall, but not everyone has the ability to do this.
What do you think they've done? What dumped software are you talking about? You keep alluding to something in it, yet so far your channel has only spread FUD, and you have demonstrated to have no expertise to analyze any of it anyway. If people don't want to send their prints throught the cloud then they don't have to use it. Bambu hasn't locked printers into using the cloud in any way and this firmware doesn't change that nor indicate any change like that. Firmware analysis has shown that Bambu are thruthful and receive no data when in LAN mode and only very limited data when connected to the cloud. If there was a smoking gun, you would have shown that months ago, instead you keep spreading FUD and promising some magical reveal of something damning that is not there.

I was just about to buy a BL printer as my first printer. But reading up on this change, makes me really glad I didn't pull the trigger and buy one already. Will be going with a different company now.
To prevent updates, turn the printer to lan only, then go into your routers parental settings, select the printer (identify using MAC address) and prevent internet access permanently. I do this and it works (also using orcaslicer)
ok, that should work as long as manufacturers don't start randomizing MACs just to test connectivity. Having a separate LAN with no gateway could be even better option, but a bit more hassle to set up.
I was talking about 3d printers with a co-worker this morning. I settled on picking up a Bambu X1C with the AMS...I'll be looking at other options now.
As a proponent of open-source and right-to-repair, Bambu had set off many red flags before this change. But all those fans of the printer's ease of use kept mocking us. Turns out our concerns were justified. The signs were there, some just refused to accept them.
Wasnt Bamboo already hacked and a parallel OS firmware released to get rid of their bs? I understand that enterprises don't have this as an option (at least in countries where they care to enforce these things lol), but individual users have no issues with changing to the alternative version and keep using their products as if they actually own them.
Juts so you know Louis, our Epson Stylus NX420 multi-function printer/scanner also refuses to scan when an ink cartridge is empty. Imagine you're a grown adult, you buy yourself a PC, TV, Printer or basically anything.
But to use your device in your own house which you have paid for with your own money you have to go and call your dad to ask for permission.
It's a subject mindset that allows for this, not a citizen mindset.
I have a 3d print farm with over 60 printers. I'm currently in the process of updating it with modern printers and opted for the Bambu for a variety of reasons:
It's quick change nozzles to quickly get back and running from clogs.
Their incredible vibration compensation.
The ability to easily manage dozens of print jobs at once from a computer.
To say I'm disappointed by this news would be a massive understatement.
What did you opt to update to?

I'm updating from old Makerbot Replicator 2's.
_"Their incredible vibration compensation."_
this can be achieved on any properly build printer running Klipper firmware.
Send them an email telling them this is not suitable for your use, and you'd like them to collect the machines and refund your costs.
This will result in bambu to have their firmware source "leaked"
yeah but that's not a solution, that's more like when Louis had to get schematics from sketchy websites.
It's been done
While I do think they are foolish, there's a large segment of untapped consumers that don't want to do with anything low-level. They want something they pull out of the box, peel all the plastic off of, install a driver and click print.
Doesn't justify this BS, of course.
@@larrybud -- Not sure those people are big into 3D printing though.
I mean untapped is not entirely accurate. This was the entire market that Prusa and Ultimaker focussed on.
Bambu somehow managed to do it a lot cheaper (and I think we are about to find out how they did that)
A man of the people! Please keep up the good work Louis! Than you!
We asked for this when we let Apple get away with releasing a slowdown update the same week they release a new iPhone
It’s seldom legal but they know the price to take them on is normally too high so they figure they’ll get away with it.
Give up faith in the legal system and it won't be astounding anymore. That's what I did!
Its not legal, but they have better lawyers, and recently courts and rights organizations seem to be getting lazy.
Everything is legal when you're rich enough to pay the fine

Yeah I was always wary of them despite how good they were. I knew if I bought one it would come back to bite me. Glad I got an elagoo instead.

So glad I went with an open-source, Klipper-based machine for my first 3D printer. I had almost bought a Bambu, and instead got a Qidi. After the recent news I'm very happy about my decision.

Thank you, Louis, and everyone helping, for doing this. Thank you.
They made sure to wait until after everyone opened their new printers for Christmas to make this change. The printer is fantastic, its a sad state of affairs.
Yeah, I had largely the same reasoning for building a Voron 2.4 instead of buying an X1C. I didn't feel comfortable in buying a machine that was closed source by design and has a relatively unproven track record for longevity - even considering how good the out-of-box performance is.
Prusa will do the same
@@jp9403my XL and Mk4S run GPL firmware. I have a copy of the source code which I was able to build. If I want to run my own firmware, all I have to do is break a trace on the PCB. Nah, Prusa won‘t do that.

Happy I never bought their printer :)
What does this have to do with RUclips?
@@saulgoodman2018 I assume it's sponsor dollars even if they're not directly coordinating with youtube for preference in the algorithm. If you drop money on a ton of 3d print channels to have them repeating your product names and you're running ads for your products, you're going to sway the algorithm in your favor through sheer volume. The algorithm is just gonna say "wow, lot of people talking about Bambu, people must love it, better push more of those videos!"
"For your safety, security and privacy" ... 🙄
(clueless)
(tagged for deletion)
I love that anyone who bought that weak excuse is not mad that they have been continually and knowingly selling incredibly vulnerable devices exposing their users to significant risks for years...
And meanwhile all prints sent to the printer get sent to their Chinese servers first... Totally privacy and security first. 😂🤡
Says the chinese company :D
If it's online, then it is already AGAINST all 3 of those goals.
Don't listen to the FUD. You can use the printer completely offline, just like any other printer.

Seems the right time to build your own Voron, my dude!
you could always convert your enders to corexy.... my ender 3 neo became an e3ng (though other projects also exist) & my ender 3 v2 is about to get a custom corexz conversion (not enderwire, but similar without the enclosure or body kit). you'll be seriously upgrading your capabilities while simultaneously getting away from both creality & bambu, both of whom can't seem to figure out how to take care of their customers.
As an end game printer I would go for a Prusha CORE or build a Voron
Prusa
And then you need a replacement part...
@@riba2233 What's wrong with it? The original version had issues but the newer extruder and hotend reportedly solve them and look to soon be available in a bundle with the CFS kit when it launches.
How hard is rooting for someone that know nothing about it ?
You go into the settings menu on the K1's built in screen and select the root option. Then to actually add things you can use an ssh program on your pc or phone to connect to the printer. It's easier than it sounds and there are even helper scripts that you download on to the machine and then run just by copying commands into the ssh program. From there you have a full menu of options. It took me about five minutes.
I was literally about to buy their printer. Yesterday evening I practically decided what model to get. Thank you very much for covering this issue.👍

Thanks Louis, I wasn't looking at this brand, but helps shorten the list of products. Thanks for your work also, very beneficial for us consumers.
On the plus side, Bambu gets to loose out on twenty to sixty sales as a reward for this "great" business decision.

I'm still looking into getting a printer and were questioned for being more interested in Prusa than Bambu. Guess what.
@@sdp8483 bambu is still superior.
The good thing with 3D printers compared to most products is
1. They have an open source heritage
2. a good section of their user base are geeks who are engaged with this sort of issue
3. RUclipsrs who care about openness, the right to hack, the right to repair etc have a huge amount of power (everyone looks to trusted YT creators like makers muse to evaluate printers)
...all of which means that enough pressure can be put on manufacturers to back-down from this sort of thing.
But the fact that it can be done, doesn't mean it inevitably will every time. People have to fight for it to happen.
This is why you need cloud authentication taken out of the products completely, because when it's in there, they can use it to leverage more controls. The same goes for automatic updates.
YOU GOTTA FIGHT
FOR YOUR RIGHT
TO PRRRIII-IINNNT!
most commercial 3d printers are not opensource, they might have an opensource-derived firmware but they don't release their sources
Bambu Labs is literally locking their firmware making it not open source
I think people should start fighting back by publishing mods and custom firmware to avoid this.
Glad I subscribed long ago to your channel. Was just about to spend 600 dollars on a Bambu printer. Just saved me alot of heartache.
That possessive behaviour by companies is not okay.

@xjet What next, subscription based lathe and background checks for that too?
My state has been trying that for 7 years (maybe 9 now? Time flies) As well as still trying to ban Grand-TA 5. Everytime there is a "event" they blame printers, videogames, and music. As if this was still the 1980s.

Was considering to buy one; this is a great way to change my mind.
I hope that many who want to buy a Bambu Lab 3D printer will do the same
I was talking about 3d printers with a co-worker this morning. I settled on picking up a Bambu X1C with the AMS...I'll be looking at other options now.
Yet another company that only sees its customers as an open wallet and as people to control. Screw them.
Dick Dawson? Is that YOU? Heeeeey, buddy!
@ hey hey dude.
@ hey hey. I think it missed the tag there.
As a proponent of open-source and right-to-repair, Bambu had set off many red flags before this change. But all those fans of the printer's ease of use kept mocking us. Turns out our concerns were justified. The signs were there, some just refused to accept them.
Yep, I hate being proven right when it's something that's worse for everyone but what can we say but we told ya so
People like going the convenient path of least resistance and then simply justify it as they go along. Anything to not use their brain too much.
are there even any printer manufacturers who are open source any more? prusa stopped. creality? it's sad
Well they can "easily" use it with bambu locked software now.
Wasnt Bamboo already hacked and a parallel OS firmware released to get rid of their bs? I understand that enterprises don't have this as an option (at least in countries where they care to enforce these things lol), but individual users have no issues with changing to the alternative version and keep using their products as if they actually own them.
I smelled this coming and was already avoiding Bambu Lab. Glad I made the right decision. :)
Same.
Same. What are the odds they're going to lock people into using their own filament next?
Juts so you know Louis, our Epson Stylus NX420 multi-function printer/scanner also refuses to scan when an ink cartridge is empty.
At the moment it's refusing to do _anything_ while reporting a _low_ cartridge and the cartridge in question is a new FULL Epson-branded part.
Yes, I've dismantled and cleaned the unit and the issue remains.
