    In the early 1990’s my husband was sick, after much testing we discovered he was HIV positive. We had two toddlers at that time. We traced it back to an old girlfriend of his. Our children and I were negative. All there was at the time was AZT. We attended support groups in Ventura Calif. founded by the gay community-
    These young men were dying in droves. My heart broke for them as many were even shunned by their own families.
    A terrible time indeed. Joe died in 1997. My kids are now in their mid 30’s, I’m 68. Oh how my heart broke for these sweet boys and many who were hated and cursed by the masses.

    My son was diagnosed HIV positive when he was 21. He is now 45 with 5 children. None are positive. He is what is referred to as a Super Controller. We are so very fortunate. I pray that one day there will be a cure for everyone.

      The current treatment for HIV is very successful. People can now live a normal lifespan if they remain on the medications. The gold standard is of course finding a cure. It’s too bad a conservative, homophobic American president (Reagan) could have slowed the spread of AIDS during his first term (80 to 84). He finally stepped up in his second term. I wonder what RFK Jr. will do if a new disease comes along in the next 4 years? We’re going to have to rely on credible whistleblowers to save Americans.

The strength and resilience you showed, raising two toddlers while navigating such an unimaginable loss, is truly remarkable. The compassion you felt for the young men who faced not only illness but also rejection speaks volumes about your humanity. Those times were indeed heartbreaking, but stories like yours remind us of the love and empathy that shone through the darkness. Another young gay actor who wasn't on this list was Merritt Buttrick, who played David Marcus in Star Trek: Wrath of Khan. He passed away from toxoplasmosis complication of A.I.D.S. on March 17, 1989 (aged 29). My brother came home from a convention with a silver champaign bucket. He had found Merrett in the lobby of their hotel with the bucket and a bottle. He invited him up to a party with a reading of a story he had written with a Star Trek story. Merritt loved it and asked my brother if he would trade the script with an autograph for the bucket. My brother was so very happy to do so. He said Merritt was a great guy and we loved his acting in many projects. I was very sad when he passed away.

    I came out in 1982 at the age of 18. During the 80s I was a bartender at the Bonham Exchange in San Antonio and helplessly watched as many friends, coworkers, and customers became sick and slowly faded away. It was devastating and terrifying. As a generation, we lost a huge many of our cohorts. Personally, I lost my soulmate, and any chance of discovering another. Movie stars in Hollywood were not my concern, the people closest to me were, they were the stars that doted my universe and lit up my life. Their loss is more than just a personal tragedy, the world lost some of the kindest, brightest personalizes to have ever existed. Their lives still shine brightly in my heart, and they always will. And to Joey, my Roo, I'm still keeping my promise, remaining positive but negative. I never gave up and never will, I've tried to find love and happiness like you asked, and even succeeded a bit along the way. And other than a broken heart I remain healthy. I love you, always, with all my heart; When I can't say, but I promise you Roo, I'll see you again someday.

    When AIDS was identified in the early 80s, I and most of my straight friends became celibate and stocked up on condoms in case we did indulge. I honestly never understood why gays were so careless when the consequence was death.

      What a cruel statement: ‘ I never understood why gays were so careless when the consequence was death’!!
      Seriously ????!!!
      Please do your research.
      Carefully.
      By the time HIV and AIDS came to the forefront, most individuals had already been infected.
      AIDS is not a gay disease
      either. It does not discriminate.
      It decimated the lives of millions of people. Politicians and Governments were ‘hesitant’ to really pull the trigger early on the warnings…… a painful and dreadful time in history.
      R.I.P to all those beautiful souls lost to this cruel disease. 💔

    • @hushpup
      @hushpup 5 месяцев назад +16

      It certainly was not only gay men who were sick and dying through carelessness. Certainly in this part of the world. There is the cultural aspect, polygamy, not questioning or challenging men, education or lack thereof. People doing migrant work with the subsequent fracturing of families. I can't begin to tell you how many grandmothers were singlehandedly raising their grandchildren. And then of course there's the problem of humankind ie "it won't happen to me". Also, even in a marriage, none of us truly know whether or not our partner is playing away, straight of gay. The gay community is very complex for a whole lot of reasons, one of those being families who rejected them, and finding "new families" within the community. There were a lot of gay people getting married in order to not be shunned by loved one's and society, too, but eventually what the heart wants, the heart will be sure to get, and interludes - fleeting and secret - probably led to some recklessness as condoms weren't uppermost in minds. Some country's still have the death penalty for same- sex relationships, and some families will kill those who are seen as bringing shame to their family name. Geographic reasons - sometimes condoms aren't available, or available but not affordable. Then there are religious beliefs, taboos etc. Incorrect understanding of the virus and how it's transmitted. It's far too complex to go through the many factors re why people take a chance.

    • @andrewfitzgerald2327
      @andrewfitzgerald2327 5 месяцев назад

      @@LaurelCurtis-t1f this comes from someone misinformed by the press, government and ignorance. AIDS was identified in the late 70s HIV later as the precursor. Stocking up on condoms in the 80s was shutting the door after the horse had bolted. Sex was not the only way to get infected .Shared needles affected more straight! people and using sex workers. Governments in all countries ignored the disease because it only affected gay men. Then people with blood disorders were infected by untreated blood . By the time your friends bought condoms in the 80s the decease was already rampant. The Christian thing is and was not to judge or be judged but to help. HRH Diana did this, not treat humans like animals lock them away to die alone, in the past it was done to people who were Downs , born with disability, thankfully we have learned.

      Stigmatisation always lead to a moment of emancipation that can be reckless. In other words, people that are discriminated often times force their own freedom. In the case of gays, the emancipation is sexual. Imagine forcing yourself to have sex with the gender you are not attracted to and pretending you love someone you don't really love. Once you'd be liberated from those chains, don't you think you would experiment things? Also, it was common practice even amongst heterosexuals to not protect themselves against STDs back in the days.
      This reckless emancipation phenomenon can be seen nowadays in kid actors and singers emancipating from Disney. Just think of Lindsay Lohan and Miley Cyrus.

I was married and found out I was pregnant in mid 80s. Went in for blood work. The gentleman next to me during blood draw. Told the attendant that he was HIV positive. The attendant not only ran but, everyone in the ran out screaming. My attendant and I remained we told this gentleman that we were sorry about this and told him we would pray for him. Don't you think this is getting old, AIDS was a terrible disease not taken seriously until it affected the wider population. No one actually died from Aids on the death certificate it would state Aids related . Perhaps it's time to leave these beautiful souls rest not attack them in death.

    • @hushpup
      @hushpup 5 месяцев назад +2

      I agree that those who wanted to remain private should never be outed after their passing. Besides that, I think people shouldn't forget how many souls were taken by this cruel disease. I believe the cruelty of stigmatising this virus should be known about by generations who have been born into a world that is more tolerant than people were back then. It's not perfect, but at least it's improved. x

      @@hushpup yes totally, l worked with people with Aids in the 80's but here in the UK we had a primininister who wasn't interested in it because she thought it wouldn't effect her popularity. Her best friend was Regan , although not involved with the NHS now l do volunteer at a clinic. It amazes me how the youth think Prep will cure them and Aids really does not exist it's a thing of yesterday.

      You mean Thatcher? I remember both her and Reagan weren't interested. We were the same in South Africa, even after AZT was available. Our Minister of Health and our President at the time absolutely refused to make medicine available. The Minister of Health told people to eat beetroot and African potatoes! I saw heartbreaking things during that time. A young couple and their newborn baby died. The man was a migrant worker from Zimbabwe, working in South Africa to make money to send home. He was very good looking and unfortunately had many girlfriends, His live-in girlfriend was pregnant and gave birth, but the baby, the mom and the dad all started getting very sick. He said all the doctors at the hospital could offer was Panado, which of course did nothing. First the baby, then the mom and then the dad all passed away. The little family unit was gone. We later found out that he was married in Zimbabwe and that his wife was sick and so was their baby. And there were people who were angry with him, but at that stage, it was too late, and so much loss.The kids are taught about HIV currently, but not very much is said, if anything, about the reality of what was happening. The President was replaced, and although his replacement caused problems in his own way, at least he welcomed medication. x

      @@hushpup yes, but the name sticks in my throat ,she was evil. The press loved her, all public school boys who were scared of a woman . It was so sad how many died unnecessarily so many lives could have been saved. I have often left a consultation in disbelief at some of the things said. I know it's on the school syllabus here but not compulsory. It happens to someone else like pregnancy. Have a good day.

    I was born in 1971 and knew I was gay from the start. I remember finding out about AIDS in a Time Magazine article from the 1980s. It was scary but I did nothing to curb my conduct and I was as promiscuous as the best of them starting when I was 14. Somehow, I never got it. I knew so many guys who died. It was like being in a combat zone. “Did you hear that so and so got it?” And yet like a soldier I’ve walked through the mine field and survived. I’ve been to more funerals than I can count and I remember all those bright young men and I think why them and not me.

    Freddie Mercury being gay was far from a secret. As a teenager and young adult in the late 70's and 80's, it was common knowledge to us true fans. In fact, when I heard that he'd been married to Mary, I thought that was bizarre. I figured he must have been using her as a "beard" or else the music industry arranged it as a publicity stunt. We loved Freddie, gay and all. What an incredible talent.

      A despicable one at that. Trump was always with Cohn, and learned his attack, counterattack courtroom conduct from him. Cohn, who was a despicable and disliked person, also refused to pay his bills, and tutored Trump in doing the same. When Cohn got sick and was dying, with AIDS, Trump mostly abandoned him, and didn’t attend his funeral. Trump once sent him a set of “diamond” cufflinks, which turned out to be as fake as Trump’s own tan and hair.

Might have been the next James Bond if it were not for the rumors surrounding his sexuality. Lost to AIDS far too soon, at age 42, in 1995. Forever loved and missed. ❤
