This has got to be one of the best scenes in video game history. It's pure genius. Even Santaolalla's intentionally, bare to bones music matches the scene perfectly. I hope HBO does justice to this brilliant piece of art.
When you think of everything the two have gone through up to that point, and then what happens afterwards, especially in light of Part II, this one simple moment I think is the The most important emotional beat in the entire story. It's the closest thing the story allows you to a happy ending. Then, it's gone.
It's so sad honestly where they took the direction of the second game, just absolutely disappointed in the wasted potential for greatness. Of course I didn't hate the second game but as Ellie says in the cutscene "It all can't be for nothing" and unfortunately that's what happened. It was all for nothing...

The bond between Joel and Ellie is why we love The Last of Us. Forget the sequel. The sequel doesn't exist.
And the sequel is about this bond and how to move on from someone's death, through Ellie's grief, and what Joël would have wanted best for Ellie.

@@howardparkes8787 Even if Naughty Dog purely intended to go with the whole revenge storyline, I feel like they were scared to make Ellie the villain.
