I have always wanted a Svartpilen. I was really hoping they were going to finally release that 501 that was supposed to be in the works. I also like the styling on previous models more. I love all these updates but I wish they would have remained almost unchanged aesthetically. Nice step forward with the Viltpilen, handlebars over clip-ons is always the way to go for street bikes. A step backwards for Svartpilen- basically a styling exercise and nothing more. Could have given it some actual suspension travel and a 19-inch from wheel for some decent offroarding chops and lost very little on the street. Could've been a pretty neat little scrambler, alas...

First, let me say that the Svartpilen 401 looks like a very enticing bike. That said, I wouldn't exactly say it has a new engine. A Svartpilen with a new engine would look something like a 501 parallel twin, which would've been amazing, but unfortunately KTM scrapped the 490/501 platform. Considering all of the amazing new bikes that are coming out in this size class (like the cfmoto 450 bikes, the Aprilia 457, the updated Kawasaki 400/450/500 line) I still can't get over KTM's immeasurably shortsighted decision to cancel the 490/501 twin cylinder range of motorcycles.

They are still using the KTM engines which are fine in good weather but they don’t like the cold and wet weather, I really thought about buying one but having found out where they were built and the engine I thought better of it. A European bike built in India is taking the Micky you might as well of had them built in china, when buying a bike my first thought is build quality and reliability and I’m not so sure when it comes to these. I will wait a few more years before thinking about buying one of these and let’s see how they depreciate because that’s a tester in itself, I’ve bought a Honda as I know they only build quality machines and they really do hold their prices. I’ve had lots of other models but for me Honda has been the best and for that reason I went back to them, I do like the look of these bikes don’t get me wrong but I’m a all year round driver so reliability is premium and I’m still unsure about these.

The exhaust is the bash plate. Good looking machine but thats it, just a good looker, ok if your a street credder who likes a 5 minute talking point. Reliability issues will alway plague this brand whilst they are associated with KTM as they keep on replacing metal parts with plastic ie water pumps and oil pumps, plus more and more KTMs are now being built in China and India.
