  • July 14, 1977 dawned hot and humid in New York City. By 9:30pm the city would be plunged into darkness for more than 24 hours. In the wake of the power outage, tensions that had been simmering for years erupted into looting and violence. "Blackout" premieres July 14 at 9/8c on PBS American Experience.

1977. The Blackout, Son of Sam, the Yankees, Star Wars, the passing of Elvis, recession, inflation, crime, and so on and so on...It was a fun time if you were a child. But for an adult it was enough for a nervous breakdown.

I was born in May 1977. The black out happened in July. I asked my dad how he and my biological mother were active to handle that time and my dad said he was lucky because he had just stepped out of the elevator at his job when the black out happened. He stayed to help people out of the elevator.

I remember that blackout, I was only about 5 years old.. My main memory of that night was a Mr Softy ice cream truck all lit up coming up the dark street in my Queens neighborhood..

I was at Jones Beach in Brooklyn NYC, with my mother and Aunt Harriet. We had no clue, what was going on until we got in the car to go home and the traffic lights were not working properly. I had just graduated High School. And the film from my Graduation was at the Pharmacy to be developed. Needless to say during that night the Pharmacy was part of the looting that happened, so no photos got developed. I will never forget those 2 days.I was at Jones Beach in Brooklyn NYC, with my mother and Aunt Harriet. I was able to go with my parents to the top of the WTC when I was 11 in May 2001. It's probably my favorite photograph of myself. I remember there was a Ben & Jerry's ice cream stall on the ground level and I had wanted to get some but my dad just kept pushing it off and saying we could get it next time... :(

Those addicted to the phone will have an issue with withdrawal though

me and the kids been preparing on powerbanks, portable energy batteries from solar to dynamo electric, using gadgets to do early warning system (even without cellular there are ways to listen to radio & the new iphones have more battery storages) this was 1977s we been preparing decades to counter-act another katrina since. im born in 2000s with my childhood experiencing black outs (third world country before i moved in the US) we tend to improvise even without TV or lights using flashlights to play or shower in the dark, manul fans to keep cool or do night time grills to cook for dinner. if powers went out today, we could find a way to pass time

Covid 19 pandemic can create and accumulate stresses on the US' power grid, and the same thing can happen. If not this wave, next winter will.
Imagine this scale of blackout happening in winter.

I was like 13. I was at home sick the day the towers fell, got to watch it at home while being so confused.
Now I'm figuring out it was a planned implosion as the buildings imploded on themselves and building 7 as well and it never got hit.
