- July 14, 1977 dawned hot and humid in New York City. By 9:30pm the city would be plunged into darkness for more than 24 hours. In the wake of the power outage, tensions that had been simmering for years erupted into looting and violence. "Blackout" premieres July 14 at 9/8c on PBS American Experience.
1977. The Blackout, Son of Sam, the Yankees, Star Wars, the passing of Elvis, recession, inflation, crime, and so on and so on...It was a fun time if you were a child. But for an adult it was enough for a nervous breakdown.
Yup.
Don't forget Bee Gees.
new york was in its glory days.
.... 'specially if ya' lived on 42nd St
I was born in May 1977. The black out happened in July. I asked my dad how he and my biological mother were active to handle that time and my dad said he was lucky because he had just stepped out of the elevator at his job when the black out happened. He stayed to help people out of the elevator.
I remember that blackout, I was only about 5 years old.. My main memory of that night was a Mr Softy ice cream truck all lit up coming up the dark street in my Queens neighborhood..
QueensNative I was 7 in Brooklyn.
I was at Jones Beach in Brooklyn NYC, with my mother and Aunt Harriet. We had no clue, what was going on until we got in the car to go home and the traffic lights were not working properly. I had just graduated High School. And the film from my Graduation was at the Pharmacy to be developed. Needless to say during that night the Pharmacy was part of the looting that happened, so no photos got developed. I will never forget those 2 days.I was at Jones Beach in Brooklyn NYC, with my mother and Aunt Harriet. Jones Beach is on Long Island, about 30 miles from Brooklyn (2 times).
I loved the Twin Towers! I wish I could have gone to Windows of the World and the Observation Deck before 9/11
I was able to go with my parents to the top of the WTC when I was 11 in May 2001. It's probably my favorite photograph of myself. I remember there was a Ben & Jerry's ice cream stall on the ground level and I had wanted to get some but my dad just kept pushing it off and saying we could get it next time... :(
listing this on my virtual time travel
They saw a lot of history in their short 28 years of history didnt they.
Is there a Chapter 2 anybody? I can't find it.
Notice how they shut down the poorer parts of the city first. 🤔
Eerie to see those two towers then blackout
Watching this and hearing them talk about the lights going off and being out. Makes me wonder how they'd feel about seeing nyc empty cause of covid and lockdown
I don't know why seeing the twin towers during blackout terrifies me
Same
It just happened again today july 13th, 2019 coincidence ?
Somebody made a silly joke I guess...It can't be coincidence...
also happened in 2004.
I lived thru it on the north tip of Manhattan , we didn't have flashlights or anyway to cook living in an apartment building
Wow cool story your the best
imagine the night sky
Funny; I thought this blackout was caused by a practical joke by the Great Attractor. :D
The Sky stays LIT💯👌
Was John Lennon living there at the time?
yes.
This generation would do better as we all have cell phone with lights and mobile chargers and such.
Those addicted to the phone will have an issue with withdrawal though
me and the kids been preparing on powerbanks, portable energy batteries from solar to dynamo electric, using gadgets to do early warning system (even without cellular there are ways to listen to radio & the new iphones have more battery storages) this was 1977s we been preparing decades to counter-act another katrina since. im born in 2000s with my childhood experiencing black outs (third world country before i moved in the US) we tend to improvise even without TV or lights using flashlights to play or shower in the dark, manul fans to keep cool or do night time grills to cook for dinner. if powers went out today, we could find a way to pass time
Where's part 2?
I have to say I liked this one. However I also have to agree with the Newsday review, it's good great even. But incomplete though.
..... 2:30 - EASY!

Covid 19 pandemic can create and accumulate stresses on the US' power grid, and the same thing can happen. If not this wave, next winter will.
Imagine this scale of blackout happening in winter.

Charlie Davis The Architect miss it😟
2019?
The major blackout was 1977 during a heat wave and Son of Sam murders.
Only if I was born when the twin towers was still up I’m a 2003 baby
I was 22 in 2003 buddy
They were a beautiful monument to New York architecture, and those of us who had the pleasure of visiting them or working there were very lucky. Unfortunately we just didn’t know it. If only we can see the future, right?
I also was a 2003 baby
I was like 13. I was at home sick the day the towers fell, got to watch it at home while being so confused.
Now I'm figuring out it was a planned implosion as the buildings imploded on themselves and building 7 as well and it never got hit.
you just know everything dont you@@KyleTO7
