I enjoy your videos so much. They really make my day. They are my cup of coffee videos most days, and I think you know what an honor that represents! :-)
Rachel, really deeply touched by your passion for these little cuties, I myself is also a frenzy hobbyist. The wide variety of species that you have is also absolutely stunning! Wish I had a fish room like yours.
I put out blue-green Moscow guppies for my very first tub this year! Now I have to take out the plants and look around for dragonfly larvae. Next year I will definitely put out my blue dream neocardina, and endlers, too!
Omg, how about yes to everything? LOL I am finding your outdoor plants and fish series is so very interesting. As I’ve said before I am very limited as to what I can do, but overall the whole series is just so fun to watch. Thank you for taking the time to do these beautiful videos. I know they are really really appreciated . I am learning about small fish as well as what works overall. It is a beautiful sunny Easter Monday here in Alberta Canada, and I am going to go and sit out on my balcony, Enjoy the sun and green bag while I live small.
I have had some Mollies out since early March with no heater in a 25 gal tub and they have already bread once and not showed any sign of stress. They are not a pure line or anything special, but I will say they have needed fed even with significant amount of plants. Then about 3 weeks ago I moved out my stock of red mosaic dumbo ear guppies in a 140 gal with a 300 watt heater and they have been doing great. The tub has lots of floaters and some stems just floating around. The plants are looking good so they are obviously producing waste. I have fed them fish food about once week and keep introducing live cyclops and seed shrimp to give them something to munch on until the regular insects start showing up. I am in central Ohio so very similar to Rachel as far as temp and weather.
Along with outdoor tubbing, I'm always happy to see cats and CHICKENS! Especially chickens! Not many aquarium sites can feature chickens, and they are such fun wonderful creatures!
Heck yeah, terrestrial plants! Have you ever done elephant ear or taro in pots in conjunction with the tubs? They are such a cool tuber that can shade the tubs and pools during the heat of the day.
I set up a patio aquarium with danios and rasboras with a few leaves and pods to have a bit of blackwater. I must say they have the most stunning colours. My zebra danio looks to have blue stripes and my harlequin rasboras have a purple undertone.
Looking forward to the updates - I'm definitely trying shrimp this year after seeing the haul you got! My tub is full of daphnia already. What temps would it need for ember tetras to be ok? I'd like to up my numbers of those.
Just love all of your contents. Never a dull moment. Everything is an insperation. Can't wait for summer here although I might even start the tub already as our winter temps goes down to about 40F which is not that bad. Summer goes up to 95-104F. Want to get a good amount of moss and vallis going as I will be doing rainbows, boesemani and kutubu, in the tub. Not sure yet if I want to move the adult fish or just the eggs to the tub.
I'm working on a 110 gallon tub garden...I would like to have a few fish as mosquito deterrents, but I'm not interested in breeding fish, so I'm researching fish that would do well in my Zone 6a tub. Would love to see the succulent and/or tropical plantings, this is a hobby I'm very interested in, as well!
I live in zone 10, Phoenix, but believe it or not I have a suggestion for you. Every year I managed to leave some of my platies outside when I bring in my outdoor fish for the winter, and every year they survive. I have found platies to be really flexible when it comes to temperature and able to survive temps into the 50s without any trouble. You might try them once it warms up there. :-)
Rachel, I live in Arizona, which is quite warm year round, if I were to make these tubs with a heater for the few days a year that it's cold, do you think they'd be able to survive our summers? Or would it be too hot for most tropical species?
I really don't know much about your climate, m y experience is all with my own. I will say, it is most likely worth trying. You may want to start with plants and monitor the temps to see how high they get in your tub, and if its worth trying fish.
I’m not Rachel, nor do I live in Arizona (Michigan), but I believe shade would be your best bet without running an expensive chiller. Shade can provide a significant drop in temperature whether it be a natural source or with shade netting. Hopefully someone can chime in further. Good luck! P.S. I couldn’t imagine living in a hot state like Arizona. I like ice fishing way too much lol.
@@ryanwilson5936 exactly, or make some tests. Tubs in sun, Tubs in shadow, tubs partly placed in the ground in sun and shadow, tubs mainly underground,... Monitoring and choose your fish. The bigger the bin, the more thermal stability (to compensate night/day temp differences, or differences in days)...And remember : fish in nature (mostly) have different temperature saisons.
Love to see anything you want to share with us and congratulations on signing up with Patreon - I really hope it helps you be able to travel more to share your expertise!!
I just think it may help a bit with me being able to expand into trying out various projects and kits tanks, etc to give you guys some honest feedback. It can be hard to tell if someone is being genuine, especially if they also sell the product. I also really want to do a "how its made" sort of series where I visit some manufacturing companies of foods, tanks, products, fish farms, plant nurseries, etc so I can show you guys more about that side of hte hobby as well. #dreams
I love your tubs. I live in an apartment so I really don't have the space for an outdoor tub. I love your succulents too. Would love to see more. I started getting some after I saw yours. I would love to get more but I just got a 2 year old cat and her 4 month old daughter. So I have to wait to see if they destroy the ones I got. Love all your videos.
Last year I did white cloud minnows with pretty good success, but I did find 4 dragon fly nymphs in one of the ponds. This year I’m thinking about trying Rainbow Trifaciata. I would love to do danios too.
Great video Rachel. I think I would certainly enjoy if you took out the purple emperor Tetra tubbing. I want to see what luck you have with Tetras out there. Keep up the good work!
I love to garden too so I'd watch your repotting of succulents. 👍🏻This is my second season tubbing. I put out danio choprae, danio margaritas, danio aesculapii last year. This time I'm adding my marble angels, red and albino bristlenose, apisto cacatuades double red along with red and blue neocaridinas. I have a 300 gallon that I would like to try some non competitive species like the bristlenose, blue neocaridina and either CPDs or either of the other danios. They are all pretty sweet looking fish in my eyes.
I'm moving out 10/15 of my K class endler colony. Just because I want to see how well they do. They've been very well established for over a year inside (I have to drop them off at my LFS every few months so they don't overpopulate my 'small fish' tank). I want to see what happens to their color outside. They are blonde endlers who have very little (if any) black at all. I bet the males will really pop from all the sunlight the small bin I have gets.
Gold barbs, I tried some 2 years ago but the kept jumping out of the container. This year I have some new stock and will keep them in a container with lower water levels to prevent jumping. I will move out white clouds, platys and would like to try Pygmy Cory cats. Thanks for your videos.
Yes, would love to see how you go about planting those succulents. I need to repot my Aloe Vera very soon and would love to see wha you use for the succulents.
I was at a pet shop that was selling freshwater clams or mussels, which surprised me a LOT. Not native ones. What do you think of trying to breed those in your bins?
@@RachelOLeary do you mean that living in aquariums they do "meh", so it's too risky to have them just hang around or die, or do you mean breeding is "meh", so you might not get anything worth the effort, or do you mean people buying them is "meh", so you might not make enough selling them to lukewarm interest? 🤔
Oh. I think that was part of what surprised me about them being sold, I'm not sure how much they would be able to eat as filter feeders. But I didn't ask what the pet shop sells to feed them. I couldn't tell if they were alive or not.
Purple tetras (I want some, so you need more!) And pencil fish.. I have red tiger platys from last year that did very well. Adding a tub of balloon Molly's this year because of your budget series! Ty!
GO FOR IT!!! lol. as for my fish, I don't know yet, have a tiny balcony on a city appartment and last year I did my first out door tubbing with regular and endler guppies. Even though it was a small tub, high and not so wide, without a pump, they did amazing. So going to see what I can get out here to do an inexpensive but on the balcony this year. What I did notice is that in the city there are less and less bugs, even for my pitcherplants I almost have to catch them myself. so hopefully with some danio's I'll have enough bugs to feed them, but will monitor anyway. As always, thanks a bunch, just became 'fry' but will do more when I can.
Hey Rachel, is aeration a requirement for your summer tubs? Ive had success with controlled breeding setups but would like to try my hand with a more hands off approach
How would you handle a situation where you'd love to have a summer tub stocked with some of your favorite fish, but you don't have an indoor location that the fish could go to in the winter when temperatures in my state (Massachusetts) are way too low for fish to be left in ponds outdoors.
You’ve probably mentioned it but what’s the best time of day (morning or afternoon) to have sunlight on your outdoor tubs? First time trying this so not too sure.
I appreciate all you do to help us learn more about fish and their care. I am really wanting to try the tubbing idea too but here in the high desert of AZ (1/2 way between Tucson and Phoenix) I am worried that even in my screen room or under car port, the 40 gallon with waterfall will be too hot and it is full shade so not sure what plants would work. What are you thoughts?
@@RachelOLeary Thanks for the quick response. I will. Probably not any fish small fish that can handle warm water. I will try a season of plants and monitor the temps then maybe fish next year once I have some clue what I am dealing with temp wise try fish. I will get back to you and let you know if case you get other questions down the road on warm water tubbing as I am sure I am not the only person out here in the west who wants to try outdoor fish breeding, but I am not having any luck finding the ones who have done it on a small scale. LOL
Hey Rachel! I was thinking of trying to breed rosy loaches outdoors but i didn't know how they would do? I saw a video from awhile back where you tried them in a tub but I couldn't find a follow up on how they did. What do you think? Thanks!
Hey Rachel I would be interested on how summer tubbing with most tetras work. Do you have any experience with cardinal tetras? Hope you could do more species spotlight on tetras and other South American fish
I put 10 Zebra Danios out and one died. And I put 15 White Clouds in with them. They are in a tub with Mystery Snails that are laying eggs like crazy, and Ramshorn and Bladder/Pond Snails, and the plants are Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) and Guppy Grass in the water, with a Water Hyacinth and Water Lettuce floating on top. The Guppy Grass seems to crowd everything else out
Last year i had a lot of fun with guppies and platios so this year i got some zebra danios and flame tetras bcs they were only fish oći could find here that can stand colder water
Last year was my first year with tubs outside inspired by your videos and expanding this year. Want to try Endlers, cherry shrimp and daisy rice fish this year plus white clouds and longfin leopard Danios that I did last year. Also have purple emperor tetras and celestial pearl Danios I would like try. Purple emperors were outside last year but had no fry.
I am so glad you had success! I am curious to see how the emperors do for me, I would imagine layering the planting in the tub would be key as they are very sassy when spawning
Do you think it is worthwhile to breed scarlet badis, dario kajal, or the 'black tiger' dario? Could keep them in a tub outside and drop brine/mysis shrimp in there along with the mosquito larvae.
Any help? I’m kinda new into fish keeping and was thinking about doing 1 run of Lily’s but idk what fish, I’m in California where sometimes the weather is bi-polar..
GUPPIES!!! Always gonna vote for guppies. They're my favorites. I'm doing fancy guppies out in my tub this year and possibly some Neocaridina Shrimp. 😊
If they would not jump out, I would put some n rachovii. As I have a decent colony of them now. I may just go buy a trio of swords/ plattes. I ma using a blue 26g bucket this year. I have a 1" layer of dirt, then 1" of gravel. This weekend is trim day then going too plant it.
Another great vid Rachel! I was wondering, I don’t remember you ever saying you had issues with raccoons and your tubs but any advice or tips if you did? I have some raccoons that came by my tub and chewed a piece of sponge filter off lol
Got my first tub today! The lady looked at me like I was nuts when I rolled up in my little Scion tC but it’s a hatchback and the 150 Rubbermaid fit lol
I’m going to pick up a group of Senegal polypterus for ponding this year. Just for the fun of growing some big females. I checked petsmart had a group of 5 I snagged the biggest already for my growout fingers crossed it’s a female. I have enough runt males 😆.
When you asked whether we'd like to see how you make your planters, I nearly blurted out "yes, please!" Which would help no one, since it's just me, in the break room. >_> I'd love to see more content with your terrestrial plants~
I want to put a summer tub so bad!! but i live in a small apartament and the little piece of land is for everyone on the building, plus im scared that people are going to try to steal :c some day i will have the summmer tub of my dreams!!!
If I could I'd move Neon Green Rasboras ( I'm not an expert on them but again this is just a fantasy move so..). Patreon sounds great, I certainly would like to help if I can, hopefully soon.
I want too ask about corry fish, are they rely sensitive to medicines, or ting like new substrate, i think i killed 5 of them, another fish are ok ... and 2 survived 1 its also seek in my opinion i think maybe its fish blood disorder, tank you in advance king regards.

I really wish I had more knowledge about hot water stuff- My best advice is to go to a local garden center, and see what htey are selling, plant wise
LOL
And yes on the succulents. I'm considering giving some succulents a try myself.
Hey Rachel! I was thinking of trying to breed rosy loaches outdoors but i didn't know how they would do? I saw a video from awhile back where you tried them in a tub but I couldn't find a follow up on how they did. What do you think? Thanks!
I got fry!!
@@RachelOLeary thank you for getting back to me! Just signed up for your patreon as well. Take care.
Hi Rachel, I was thinking about doing some binning with gertrudae rainbows. Is this a species you think would be successful in a tub?
They breed quite readily but often will eat their eggs before they can hatch into fry so it's easiest to mop spawn them in two containers
What do. you think about putting out some Neon green rasboras? Have a lovely day! I thought about putting out these. Or guppys:)
Hey Rachel I would be interested on how summer tubbing with most tetras work. Do you have any experience with cardinal tetras?
Hope you could do more species spotlight on tetras and other South American fish
I don't generally move tetras outside, just because its relatively mild here, and the seasonal shifts are better for danios and rasboras.
Hi Rachel,
I want to setup a south american stream biotope. Can you tell me which species you think are capable for this biotope?
You would have to figure out what stream in what country
I'm curious if otocinclus would work outdoors, considering their diet.
Hi Rachel! When you move your fish out do you put multiple species in a tub, or do you keep your tubs species only?
Usually species only
Last year was my first year with tubs outside inspired by your videos and expanding this year.
Yes, I am so into the plants that I Need for my vivarium and terrariums! I would
Like to turn a room into a tropical paradise
Do you think it is worthwhile to breed scarlet badis, dario kajal, or the 'black tiger' dario? Could keep them in a tub outside and drop brine/mysis shrimp in there along with the mosquito larvae.
Absolutely as long as you have both genders
Please do move out some cardinal shrimp. I'm very interested to learn if they can do well in tubbing.
Any help? I’m kinda new into fish keeping and was thinking about doing 1 run of Lily’s but idk what fish, I’m in California where sometimes the weather is bi-polar..
Oryzias latipes absolutely perfect tub fish
The lady looked at me like I was nuts when I rolled up in my little Scion tC but it’s a hatchback and the 150 Rubbermaid fit lol
oooo! 150!! NICE!
Rachel O'Leary it’s my birthday present to myself!
Happy happy birthday to you!
Rachel O'Leary thank you!
I love doing neocaridina shrimp, and guppies. If the temp drops, nothing will go wrong
I’d love to see the planters
I would very much appreciate a succulent planting video.
I’m going to pick up a group of Senegal polypterus for ponding this year. Just for the fun of growing some big females. I checked petsmart had a group of 5 I snagged the biggest already for my growout fingers crossed it’s a female. I have enough runt males 😆.
I’d be interested in seeing the plants!😊
@Rachel O'Leary:
For the big tub: could you get a *Freshwater Archerfish?* He'd deal with those Dragonfly's nicely!
I'd love to see more succulent stuff!
Have you ever tried cherry barbs outside
I haven't, but they would do quite well
When you asked whether we'd like to see how you make your planters, I nearly blurted out "yes, please!" Which would help no one, since it's just me, in the break room. >_>
I'd love to see more content with your terrestrial plants~
I want to see it :) I love plants as well
I want to put a summer tub so bad!! but i live in a small apartament and the little piece of land is for everyone on the building, plus im scared that people are going to try to steal :c some day i will have the summmer tub of my dreams!!!
😊 You are most welcome, I'm just stocked that I can give a little back.
If I could I'd move Neon Green Rasboras ( I'm not an expert on them but again this is just a fantasy move so..). Patreon sounds great, I certainly would like to help if I can, hopefully soon.
You shoud try Sawbwa resplendens in tubes. I breed mine by moving floating plants outside a month before selling them so eggs can hatch.
I don’t have tubs I’m living through you Rachel!! Since this is the case can you bin some Pirahnas for me thanks!!!
I want too ask about corry fish, are they rely sensitive to medicines, or ting like new substrate, i think i killed 5 of them, another fish are ok ... and 2 survived 1 its also seek in my opinion i think maybe its fish blood disorder, tank you in advance king regards.
