Mike Pinder playing the mellotron creating those haunting sounds.
The Moodies always take you on a trip
keyboard/mellotron player Mike Pinder singing on this song, he also wrote it, if one of the five moodies wrote the song they normally sing it.
"Gypsy" is another amazing song by The Moody Blues..
As an afterthought - you might like "Dear Diary".
Bros, you'll love their "The Voice" and "I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock and Roll Band)" !!!
Thanks a lot. This song is a treat. Definitively in my top 2 by them after "Nights in white satin". Bought the single in 1970 at it release in France and played it addictively a huge number of times. The mellotron parts played by Mike Pinder are ethereal, haunting and mesmerizing. Love the sad lyrics, the interlacing of the voices, the silky melody, etc.
When I got the alert that you did Melancholy Man…. I was soo excited! I have always loved this song and always dreamed of you reacting to it! The more of their songs that you hear, the more amazed you will be… really. Yes, Mike Pinder sang this. Usually it was Justin Hayward, sometimes Ray Thomas who also played flute and saxophone. There are just too many incredible songs by them that will blow you away..my comment would be too long if I got started suggesting them, I’ll just say, whatever you pick, you can’t go wrong. The Moody Blues… extremely talented, detailed and unique… loved your reaction, thank you!!!!!
I enjoyed this song, they are one of my favorite groups.
Bros...listen to a version that doesn't cut off the melancholy man pleading at the end. This version was truncated, so the effect was truncated. In the full version he become completely overwhelmed by the other voices. Mike Pinder sings that part, most effectively. Great choice, great band, great show!
What an interesting and strange (in a good way) song! So lyrical but also complex. "The Story in Your Eyes" is a really cool one I've heard. Thanks for the thoughtful discussion guys!!
"Story in Your Eyes" next!! It rocks!!
Loved their music, my teen years, the British Invasion.
The sound you're wondering about is a mellotron , a special keyboard that plays entire chords with pressing a single note.
This was before synthesizers were invented.
Agreed. Pinder was a pioneer in the development of the mellotron.
@@straycatttt2766 and a master of playing one, as well.
Actually... in this case, a Minimoog synthesizer was used for the instrumental bridge, not a Mellotron. While the Mellotron did predate synthesizers, the Moog was first created in 1964.
A masterpiece, sad but hopeful at the same time. Glad you did this one.
One of my top 10 lifetime songs..and favorite groups
Moody Blues always made me think of knights on horses and damsels in distress............beautiful choice.
I was 13 years old and listened to this over and over! I LOVED the Moody Blues! Always new sounds! Soulful!❤
I was SO LUCKY to see and hear the bands of the 70’s and 80’s… Saw so many that the tickets covered my giant dresser mirror!
Wish I could do it all over !!! ❤
You mentioned about the song sounding like poetry… yes! In fact, as you hear more Moody Blues songs you will come to realize that their lyrics are always incredible right along with the melody and style and musical talent! Looking forward to your next Moodies song! 💙💙
Moody Blues 💙
This is so melancholy! It is indeed mysterious. I think a reaction to the newer Moody Blues would be great. They have a fun and more hopeful song called " I know You're Out there Somewhere" and it might be on the same album as Wildest Dreams which i saw youve already reacted to. I would be good to react to.
I found you by searching BeeGees reactions ( big fan.) I really hope you continue to listen to the BeeGees. Some of the best songs you haven't done yet of the BeeGees: Nights on Broadway, Winds of Change, Run to Me, Love Me Inside Out....those are some excellent ones. May God bless you! ❤❤❤
Thanks for doing this song. The Moodies have many great songs.
Gosh, guys, I haven't heard this song for such a long time - it's haunting, atmospheric, with beautiful lyrics. It's from the album Question of Balance, and I've been advised that it was Mike Pinder who is the vocalist here, not Justin Hayward. As I said, it's many years since I heard this song and Mike certainly sings it really well. Other great songs are 'Ride My See-Saw' and 'Isn't Life Strange'. Just for interest, Justin Hayward sings an absolutely beautiful song, 'Forever Autumn' and it was a big hit for him in 1978. It was from the double album of 'Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds' (1978) and he was one of the guest artists on the album. I had this double album and it's an incredible piece of work, if you get a chance to listen to it, guys, please do because it's fabulous. Richard Burton does the narration and his voice is just incredible, it's on YT. Thanks so much, guys, for a really interesting, thoughtful reaction, I really enjoyed it, as I always do! All the best, and keep safe. ❤👍
Just to be clear - this is Mike Pinder, the keyboardist, on lead vocals
@@cybister4864 Thanks for that, it's been such a long time since I heard this song and I assumed it was Justin Hayward! I'll change my comment, thanks again. 😊😊
@@annemaclean6634 they're a complicated band 😁
@@cybister4864 I remember back in the 1960s and early 1970s my friends and I used to share a few of their albums between us, the ones I can remember are 'Days of Future Passed', 'In Search of the Lost Chord', 'A Question of Balance' and 'Every Good Boy Deserves Favour'. Gosh, such a long time ago! 👍😊
Hi Anne, yes the Moody Blues were such a cool band. I like so many of their songs. I think the brothers reacted to "Question" before which is one of my favorites. That is neat that you would share albums with your friends😊
Wow….brings me back….🥰Thank you guys🥰😎
This whole album is amazing...great track sung by keyboardist Mike Pinder. Thanks guys!
Huh very cool. I haven't heard this one B4. Very diff than what I'm used to from the Moody Blues. Thnx for introducing to this lil gem. Peace Out ☮️❣️😊
I was fortunate to be born in 1965 ! I spent my childhood listening to AM radio no matter what I activity I was doing lol. The artists, bands were cutting edge on sounds! So cool 😊! Enjoy your channel guys!🙏😊🎸☀️a new subscriber from AZ USA!
Insanely creative song by the Moody Blues (no surprise!) Some of the sounds reminded me of being out to sea in a storm. Perhaps it is about the war and what it does to men. Such moving lyrics. Thanks guys for reacting to this beautiful song.🧡
Hi Jules, The Moody Blues were an incredible band weren't they, another one that I grew up with! I remember back in the 1960s and early 1970s, we didn't have much money, so my friends and I used to share a few of their albums between us, the ones I can remember are 'Days of Future Passed', 'In Search of the Lost Chord', 'A Question of Balance' and 'Every Good Boy Deserves Favour'. Gosh, such a long time ago but these album titles are so familiar! 👍😊
@@annemaclean6634 Hi Anne, I just realized I replied to you on your other comment instead of directly to this one. Obviously I need more coffee this morning or better yet coffee in a donkey mug!!😂
Love The Moody's. Please play my favorite song of theirs, Watching and Waiting. The older I get (73 next Month) it has a different meaning to me.
Still watching and waiting......
These guys are my favs, wish I’d been there at the time. The whole album is wonderful trip 🍄
The whole album is good, great variety. The tracks fade into each other, so you need that context too as they were known as an albums group.
Such a great band and such a haunting song. This was used in the movie "He Never Died" starring Henry Rollins. A perfect pairing as both the song and the movie haunt you long after you first hear or see it...
This song is reminiscent of “Nowhere Man” by The Beatles.
One of the sounds you hear is from a mellotron, which is the instument where later the synthesizer is the successor of.
I love this, so haunting. Moody Blues always delivers. Thanks!
Great reaction. Thanks for the deep cut. Nice selection. More Moody Blues please.
Yes they were a complete band. all five members wrote the songs and four of them traded vocals. Lots of great songs and a wide variety. glad you selected this rarity. another one to consider is "Isn't Life Strange"
I'd agree with previous commentators that the instrumental break sound effects are mostly or all Mellotron which allowed for a form of pre-digital sampling using tapes. The Moodies were amongst the earliest bands to incorporate the Mellotron into their sound.. Mellotrons were heavy cumbersome instruments which were prone to breaking down and soon faded in popularity with the advent of Synthesizers like the Moog'
And off course Nights in White Satin ❤
Absolutely, Norah, one of my most favourite Moody Blues songs. The guys reacted to it in January last year, great reaction, they love it! 😊😊
Most of those sounds came off of Mike Pinder's mellotron, which has taped sounds of all the instruments. The best substitute for real orchestra. Old school now, I suppose. He played the mellotron and sang in this song. And wrote it. After Mike left the band (after 'Octave,' late 70s), his classical, ethereal influence left too. The music became less celestial and more pop. Justin and the others still wrote pretty and cosmic music. But without Pinder's influence, it became a little more 80s.
I just knew Nights in white Satin and heard this Song the first Time a few Months ago and it was the same Reaction. This Period of Music has so many great Pieces of Art.😍
If it's possible to make Suggestions, I highly, highly recommend you "The Days of Pearly Spencer" by David McWilliams, or "In the Dutch Mountains" by the Nits.
Greetings from Germany 🤘
Great reaction guys!
The Moody Blues so succinctly express the idea of differing views, how through striving to understand how and why others developed their views is essential for growth, and how failure to even try to grasp this, even (or maybe especially) for those with whom we don't agree... who don't see what we see, leads only to 'angry voices on the wind" (hostilities, war, etc.)
It's surely a melancholy song, yet one with hope for the growth mentioned.
I am so pleased you got around to this song - it's excellent. Great reaction, thanks.
It’s been so long since I’ve heard this song. Moodies are one of my top bands of all time. I think it was songs like this that earned them the tag ‘bummer music’. A friend called it that and I was offended because I loved them so much. But his criteria was based on how songs like this made you feel especially when high. Amplified feelings, you know. I get it, but it’s because this band was seeking Truth, and sometimes that truth was not all sunshine and puppy dogs. To get a feel for a more upbeat song on this album try It’s Up to You. As always, I appreciate the both of you. You feel like MY brothers.
If I had to choose,I would say the moody Blues is my favorite band of all time, the Doors are a very close second.
Two of the best. Ono bands!
Have you guys heard "The Actor" by The Moody Blues?
Oh my god I have not heard this for over 50 yrs , talk about going down memory lane 🙆♀️🤦♀️
A couple other Mike Pinder songs are Simple Game, Have You Heard, Lost in a Lost World are very good too. Great commentary too.
Ahh, classic Moodies..Mike Ponder wrote and sang. I believe you did Question from the same album awhile ago. Perhaps you don't realize, the band had 4 strong singers and songwriters, who contributed songs to each album, plus the drummer who liked to contribute spoken words, sometimes poetic intros and segue pieces. Hope you continue exploring them. Suggestions: In the Beginning - Lovely To See You (2 songs together), Ride My See-Saw, For My Lady, New Horizons....these will give you a good cross section of all their song writing talents.
These sounds - a Mellotron. Mike Pinder was a wizard on it.
You must try One More Time To Live by the Moody Blues and then Gypsy - really dramatic stuff
Excellent.... I haven't heard this in ages... Used to play a lot of moodies vinyl back in the day
Edit: I hope that someday you could check out their song "STEPPIN IN A SLIDE ZONE" from their octave album.
That gloomy sound is from a Mini-moog, an early portable synthesizer. Mike Pinder and Justin Hayward got the 2nd and 3rd ones ever made. Stevie Wonder got the 1st and Keith Emerson the 4th.
The sound you are hearing is a Melatron , I think
Such a beautiful and prophetic song. 🌗
@ 8:38 "When you listen to it alone, it's different. Way different." Absolutely correct. And, it gets better.
Try listening to it alone when watching Mike Pinder sing it live. ruclips.net/video/iNalya_4VkQ/видео.html The expression(s) on his face can bring one to tears.
He should have been (and could still be) an actor. He's got one of those rare but lucky faces that transmits emotion without trying.
I am ready for URIAH HEEP song "Look at Yourself"
You need to go down the moody rabbit hole
It’s the cascading voices at the end, wow, theres just nothing else like that late 60s early 70s lsd fuelled period of psychedelic epic otherworldly prog rock, it feels imported from another world not belonging to a time even
What about Queen's "My Melancholy Blues"? You have to listen...
Uriah Heep, Magicians Birthday never heard nothing like this
The sounds come from a Mellotron
Hey guys please react to the Beatles song Oh Darlin
Isn't Life Strange must be the next one.
That's a Mellotron
Slipknot- DUALITY Reaction!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you ever read your comments, which I doubt, will you please react to HOW COULD YOU LEAVE US, OFFICIAL VIDEO by NF, its being reacted to by many again now, you're missing out.
You've reacted to nothing like this, I think it's about time you did, and see how you get on with it....
I'll be very interested but I doubt it will happen....
The "Other" man was the anti-Christ.
YOU DON'T UNDERSTOOD THE MEANING OF THE SONG.
