Today I get a chance to sit down with Chris Anthony, Co-CEO of Aptera Motors, whose design philosophy is 100% centered around creating the world's most efficient car. Their most recent model reveal, Gamma, was well received at Fully Charged Live in September and has attracted industry players like Sandy Munro to their board.

Joe, I've always enjoyed your videos, and I've been a supporter of Aptera since 2020. So it is so good to see you two get together and talk. I met Chris at the FC show and besides being VERY busy, he took the time to answer my questions fully. I had also seen snippets of this video elsewhere and figured that I'd watch some of it, but ended up enjoying the whole hour+, while your conversation went all over the place (happily). Chris Anthony and Steve Fambro have worked to create the exact vehicle that I want to own. The Aptera will be super efficient, with a very low operating cost, but it will also be lightweight, nimble, and fun to drive. 2 seats and 3 wheels is not the best driving solution for everyone, but it looks to be ideal for me. Thanks for an enjoyable afternoon with your interesting show..again.

I just watched another video and read several books on regenerative agriculture that says it is critical to have animals on the farm to sequester carbon by building soil. It has to be grass-fed beef raised on a regenerative agriculture farm, but that system is better for the earth than farms only growing plant-based food. Building back the soil that has been destroyed by industrial farming techniques is an opportunity pull carbon out of the air.

I have watched a part of this interview on Aptera Owners Club RUclips channel. So when I saw it again today, January 2 2023, I thought it was stale news given that Aptera Delta design was already out. Anyway I decided to take a look, sure I wasn't going to watch the whole 1 hour-11 minutes show. But guess what, I watched the whole show. I didn't know Chris Anthony was such a verse human being with so many diverse interests, from a computer geek to a vegan. From an holistic philosopher to quantum astrophysics. No wonder they built this unique vehicle which is more than a mere piece of technology. I now understand why Aptera is a philosophy with a lively soul, and that was why I was attracted to it from day one. Aptera is truly a Movement of the people. They will succeed where others have failed. Congrats Joe for this chat!

It seems to me that data driven manufacturing creates the ability for a company like Aptera to copy and paste their process into multiple locations, thus enabling their stated philosophy of micro-factories as opposed to giga-factories. So while they may only be able to make 20,000 cars a year in one location, if you multiply that across 100 locations, that adds up to 2 million cars a year. There are more than 500 cities in the world which have a minimum of 1 million inhabitants, and almost 1000 cities which have over 500,000 inhabitants. If you include the areas around those cities which also contain potential Aptera buyers, there is a lot of potential for Aptera to sell their vehicles all over the world. Even if only 1% of the world's population lives within say 100 miles of a city that assembles Apteras, that's 80 million people who are potential buyers of the Aptera.

I'm saving up now and I hope to put down money in a year or two or three (with expected delayed delivery). Hopefully the production model gets good reviews.
As a side note, please don't become another Apple by telling customers what they want (and being totally wrong sometimes). You may need to make a whole different model that handles snow better but drops efficiency 10-20%, or offer a different color for some reason. Of course telling you not to model yourself after the most successful company in the world is probably bad advice, but, as a former Apple user, I swear that company only exists because its customer base is a cult/religion.

Now, if the entire car had the same drag force as the mirror on an F-150, that would be very impressive. Maybe that's what you meant? But either way, a lot of people get caught up in drag coefficient and they forget that the word coefficient is in there. A huge car could have a very good drag coefficient, but that doesn't mean that it has less drag than a worse coefficient smaller car.

It was Joe who misunderstood or mis-spoke, not Chris. The Aptera has the same drag (force) as an F-150 side mirror. The math is straightforward.
Front, cross-sectional area of about 8 square feet times Cd 0.13 = 1.04 effective square feet. Side mirror of an F-150 Xtra cab or with tow package is probably around 1.4 square feet times Cd if 0.95 = 1.33 or 30% more drag. I don't know if this applies to the base model F-150's mirrors though. Anecdotally, I've never seen a base model, post 2000 F-150. Around here, they're all optioned out and jacked up.

So forget three square meals a day and try three light meals a day, preferably that you have put the time into preparing yourself. Aptera's approach is the direction future EV design must go. Relative to rising battery material demand, high efficiency designs with solar-assist and smaller fast-charge battery packs will be required for an affordable EV that delivers good range and performance. Studies have shown that price is the main barrier to EV adoption. That's why an increasing pent-up demand is happening and the affordable Aptera will be right on time to supply that demand. Who did you leave behind as you climbed to the top? Those're the first you give a hand to! It's not about what we can't do, but what we can. I mean I could ask how do you manage so many youtube channels. You can ask me how I can type so many youtube comments. It's just that once we're setup we're ready to go - we build and then when we see more we keep building until we're finished. Then we look over it and see our accomplishments saying wow - and that's when we feel everything for a few seconds.

I'm actually surprised as usually, the less separated aerodynamic flow (and the Aptera will have the least of any production vehicle), the more the tendency for there to be lift. Glad that the lift is negative. Not that I think this will be used as a high-speed machine, but it's good to know that it should be quite stable at speed.

I think the Aptera is a great idea, assuming we're going to all be able to driver personal vehicles under zero carbon. That's unlikely. Chris, please engage an independent company to help you compute a detailed LCA for your car, now. This is how we must actually assess sustainability of vehicles.
BTW, ebikes are ~4000 MPGe so an Aptera will never be the most efficient personal transportation. You're still trying to build a full sized car, because people don't yet see they will need to compromise much more to get to zero. I will concede that the Aptera gets closer to sustainable, and I recognize you are hopeful that these will be much more likely to stay on the road for decades than the overly complex EVs that are electrical failures waiting to happen. Please read Volvo's and Polestar's LCA reports. Everyone's busy comparing ICE to EVs and they're failing to recognize that no car will be viable under zero carbon. Anyone who says they will be, also takes it on faith that the failed strategy of Carbon Capture and Storage actually works. Electric trains & trolleys plus micromobility are the future of transportation. A 100 kWh Aptera is a really bad thing to call sustainable, because no one needs a 1000 mile range and carrying that massive battery on your light weight design is a serious efficiency penalty. It's not too late to unwind that goal.

4* the batteries = 4* the weight= far less possibilities for solar to make a difference.
My advice would be to buy a model that suits your usage. Low mileage frequently? Buy the 250 range version. Need to do lots of long haul, then do 1000 range.

As much as I'd like to save the environment, I need to fit wood from Home Depot, plants and soil for gardening, 4-5 people, camping and sporting equipment, etc. Also, the cost. I know we'd save on gas and oil, but a lot of these EVs are way out of our price range. We pay about $10k for a 10 year old Honda and get 15-20 years out of them with very little maintenance or repair costs. Only 50 miles, sounds like this would be great for you since it can gain 40 miles a day of free energy. Would take you months to run out the battery at 10 miles a day.

Even if you can't get as much solar recharge, you can still plug it in, and it takes a lot less energy to get from point A to B with how efficient the design is with the light weight and aerodynamics.
