Feeling Weirdly Optimistic With Hank Green - Episode 17

  • Hank Green is one of the first and most popular science communicators on RUclips, having started out with his brother, author John Green, on their channel Vlogbrothers, and growing an empire of science channels through his company, Complexly. Along the way, the two of them founded VidCon, now the largest online video conference in the world, and he's written two books, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing and A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor.
    He joined me to talk about all things science and RUclips, a little bit of politics and some surprising reasons to be optimistic about the world right now.

    Regarding the unpopular crazy or negative comments having the same look and amount of space as popular/sane comments do, that's very insightful, thank you. Maybe we need word clouds for sentiment in comments, something like "people who comment on this post commonly use those phrases: very insightful, thank you, great video". Or it could group comments by topics, i.e. "john green, covid shot, environment legislation" and start with the most popular comments on that topic.

    My first exposure to the Brothers Green, was John doing crash course world history. This was back in 2010 or 2011. "Except for the Mongols"!His outtro of "like they say in my home town, 'don't forget to be awesome' ". Trying to delve in to that phrase brought me to Vlogbrothers, looking for Alaska, and the rest. (OH, I'm 53, so not exactly the target demo for them)

    Couldn't agree more. I ran into Hank at the airport gate a couple years back. Knowing I wouldn't be allowed back into my home if I didn't get a selfie with him I approached.
    What's even better is after we boarded, wouldn't you know he was seated directly in front of me. We chatted for a bit until the captain made us sit down and buckle up. Super cool guy.
    Hank, that is. The captain was alright, I guess.

    I am reminded of a quote from sombody (I forget who), which went something like "I assert that the moon is not made of green cheese, because there are no known processes that would result in that, cheese would by defintion imply milk, which implies a lot of cows, so where the hell are they, plus we've actually fucking gone there and its a ginormous rock! Why should your assertion that the moon IS made of green cheese be given equal weight?"
    I'm not sure where Iwas going with that but hell it's late and now I'm going to bed to dream about cheese.

    Yeah, the Green brothers sure are great communicators, but I still wouldn't recommend them. Especially not their channel SciShow. Shadiversity has a video about a video of theirs that I knew was wrong as soon as I watched it. What happened? Did they beg forgiveness for their huge mistake? Nope, they just hid the video. That day they lost a subscriber and I will never ever watch a video of theirs again since I won't be able to trust them getting it right anymore. Hank Green is a great communicator though. Seems nice, too.
    Shad's video is called "SciShow GOT IT WRONG! Reply to The "Lost" Recipe for Damascus Steel, Feat, IPostSwords".

    • @mayaenglish5424
      @mayaenglish5424 2 года назад +1

      I mean that seems a bit dramatic, if they got something wrong then took it down when they realized it was incorrect, I don't really see what the major problem is? Keeping the video up and pretending it was correct would have been an actual problem. Requiring people to Beg for forgiveness for being wrong about something is a bit much. Maybe an editorial "hey turns out not so much." would be good though. I haven't seen the video, but I know what Damascus steel is so presumably the video didn't have any life threatening stakes in it requiring "Begging" to be necessary that maybe a health video would have.
      Acknowledging mistakes is hard sometimes, people should do it, but I can see why you wouldn't want to if everyone's going to rip you a new one no matter what you do. And you can trust the videos because like your own comment pointed out, somebody WILL notice if they fuck up and point it out. They are talking about independently verifiable things. I often use Scishow as a springboard into looking more deeply into a niche subject that I didn't even know existed before.
      (Also nowadays Scishow and Crashcorse are much bigger than just Hank and John so my suspicion is that it was somebody else's fuck up but that inevitably the faces of companies get the best and worst of said companies publicity equally wrongly.)

    • @Elora445
      @Elora445 2 года назад

      @@mayaenglish5424
      When you make an obvious mistake that also basically insults several other cultures then you should indeed take down the video but you should also admit to the mistake. Just deleting it makes them seem as if they are sweeping it all under the rug. Not the best impression. But yeah, an editorial video "Our mistake! Here's the real information" would have been fine, but alas.
      I don't know which one's mistake it was, but it was a royal mistake and just a little research should have made it obvious. I also thought I could trust their information, but that one video was about a subject I have actually studied, so it was obvious just how much error there was in that video. Makes one wonder how much error there is in videos one does not know as much about. I know very well that not all their videos are wrong on that channel, but after that one I just can't trust them anymore. It's that simple.

    • @mayaenglish5424
      @mayaenglish5424 2 года назад +1

      @@Elora445 I mean again, I haven't seen the video so I'll take your word for it. But I'm really going to assume from literally everything I've ever seen from them ever that any culture specific insults were thoroughly unintentional.
      If you can't trust it that's ok, I try to take things with a grain of salt myself even from people I like. Because everyone is capable of making mistakes. (Which by the way, Hank himself has said before that people shouldn't take his words as gospel and that he is human and that he might get things wrong sometimes.) That's also much easier for him to impliment on his personal channels I think because I've seen him do the "oops I got this part wrong" videos on his own channel before.

    • @Elora445
      @Elora445 2 года назад

      @@mayaenglish5424
      You can at least see parts of the video in Shadiversity's video "SciShow GOT IT WRONG! Reply to The "Lost" Recipe for Damascus Steel, Feat, IPostSwords" (since you can no longer post links, I'll just spell out the video's name instead). No, he's not very professional in his reactions to the video, but he's not wrong about how many errors the original video made. He might have posted the entire SciShow video, but I'm not sure - has been a while since I last watched it.
      I'm sure the culture specific insult weren't intentional, but oh boy was it bad.
      I'm glad Hanks posts that kind of video on his personal channel. Wish they also did it on SciShow.
