How is Timo Boll (Still) So Good against Choppers/Defenders? (PP EP. 02)

- For more than 2 decades, Timo Boll seems to have no problems against choppers/defenders apart from a handful of matches. He's definitely not one of the most powerful players, yet he's one of the most effective (even at his age). Here's my take on how that is.

This makes sense: If you don‘t let the defender attack and instrad let him move around uncomforatbly in the middle by playing inconvenient topsins there, you don‘t need to move so much yourself and can just let the defender do all the work: That‘s why Timo can still play and beat top defenders at this age!

Boll's forehand technique results in back injuries.He drops his left shoulder which is a big no-no.Maze had a similar technique and also had tons of injuries.

One question; How does Timo vary his topspins to make it so uncomfortable for the defenders?
Just the overall speed varies so much. He only plays with full power when he thinks he has a good ball to do so. In the rallies in the video you see that happen a lot.
When he plays shorter, the ball comes very low/short and the opponent has to stay closer to the table. When he accelerates, then they have to move back all of a sudden.
