That peer pressure changed my oldest son's mind from putting in his SF packet. He felt he was abandoning his airborne unit. I told him if it's something you want then you can see if it's available when his reenlistment is up. A lot of old guys look back at our time in and wish we did more, Ranger or SF isn't for everyone, but it's for everyone to try and see if they can make it. Thanks for this video. This was a very good reality check topic Sean!

I'm 18 years old, I didn't know what to really do with myself because I lack strong passions for anything, but one thing I always knew was that I admired soldiers and I've always had a great sense of justice. I know the military isn't exactly a bunch of superheroes, but I figured that if I was gonna make a positive difference in the world then this would be my best shot, and I'm hoping that along the way I'll make great friends and also learn important skills and discipline through this journey. I've got a contract for 11X option 40, I leave for boot camp Jan 2 of next year right after new years; I'm nervous and pretty scared lol, but I'm also excited because I want to challenge myself and become stronger. I want to become someone that a young me would look at with admiration.

Being a former staff sergeant in the Danish army, I would definitely go Green Beret. To me, Rangers are "just" elite infantry raiders. That seems more of the same, but more intense in my opinion. I also think small patrols/ team is cooler way of operating. SF seems to have much more interesting missions... doing unconventional warfare seems a lot more interesting.
However, personally I do not have the mental fortitude to do either... never had, never will. To be honest its just too hard. I can't cope with being that physically pressed all the time.
Also, the 75th Ranger Regiment is not in itself T1. Only the RRC is considered T1.

    Great vid Buck!
Served in both RR and SF.
Go RR if you're fresh out of HS or college and want to fast track to a spec ops unit. Experiences may vary, but it's like a version of the Marines in my opinion. There are things they're very good at and other things not so much. RR is good for the young and clueless to grow up in. I would say that after your first term of service, most would look elsewhere. The majority of RR are lower enlisted, and when you leave to PCS or ETS- you're just an 11B or whatever MOS. With the exception of the few who RR a career, and go on to other Tier units.
Go SF if you're older or have a more mature outlook on life. Does SF do DA-yes. But it's missions are not as sexy at times and often not support by proper QRF or Air assets. There's a reason why you're paid much more as an E6 in SF than in RR. You're expected to solve your dilemmas and get the mission done.
The main draw back I see in SF is that each Group, Bn and even down to Team levels at times have different cultures. RR share the same mentality across the BNs.
Honest opinion- of you're want to try out with SMUs down the road, I'd recommend SF first.

    • @billyjacc

    • @killersicks5826

Buck, this brings me back all the way when I joined the Army, way back in 1987 as a junior in HS as a 11B1P13X.
Needless to say, your 100% right on the age and drive.
Back in my time, the Rangers were the terrorizes of behind the line TOC areas and "door kickers;" SF guys were counter-insugency experts and infiltrated to train insugencies, so the tended to be over the age of 27yrs and a lot more calm down. Usually, we had enough of the super high-tempo of operations and deployment and the next step was either SF or going to a light infantry unit. The ultimate tab was Delta. In my time we prayed to be invited to the pre-qualification.

My father was a Ranger and a Green Beret (32 year Army veteran) who lived in Texas before he died was and was completely duped/manipulated by a psychopathic female. I suppose they don't teach psychological operations to Green Berets.
Dad was on his deathbed alone because she created a divide-and-conquer scenario as well as scheming to throw us off with the texts she sent us. More than anything it causes me so much agony to imagine what my father must have thought as to why his children were not at his side when he died.
This female has committed 2 first degree felonies (that we know of so far) in Texas, she has played tidily winks with the Texas law enforcement agencies and court system and gotten away with wire fraud, bank fraud, and countless other crimes. We also believe her actions or inactions were purposeful in order to prevent my father from receiving care that would have saved his life.
What is that saying, 'the enemy is amongst us?' Yes, so not only are we fighting our enemies abroad but they are right here in the USA - we have serious hurtful criminals and lack the expertise to do anything to make them stop or to bring them to justice.
Please be careful out there, look out for your loved ones. If anything does not seem right, even the tinniest thing, examine that - don't let anyone tell you you are making too much out of an issue. That is how psychopaths prey on us, they know how we think and how to disarm us.
    Most of all PRAY!

Wow! That was fantastically informative, thank you for taking the time to explain the facts that often are overlooked (sometimes intentionally). As a South African, if I had the chance to pick either; it would be Ranger school and the 75th all the way. But that's nothing more than a semi-informed opinion. Even the 101st, 10th Mtn and 82nd deserve their place, you have some tough SB's that side of the pond ;)
You're point on using other units as a stepping stone (which we know happens) is a very interesting one and absolutely resonated with me, hence my comment above about Ranger school. Either way neither Ranger School, Q Course, BUDS, A&S or any other are easy, it's that way for a reason. Same as RECCE selection here, you just want to want it badly enough.
    Have a blessed Easter.

    Buck, appreciate your content.
Rangers are great at what they do. However, the biggest question in my opinion when deciding to go SF or Ranger Regiment is whether you want the "team guy" lifestyle or the conventional army experience. There's pros and cons to both. Ranger regiment is a special ops unit; however, their day to day is very much like a conventional unit. They have a bigger budget and are assigned some great missions overseas and some great training, but it is very regular army. It's a weird dichotomy there. They push "special ops" or "cool guy" culture, but it is very regimented. It's very group think and individualism is very frowned upon. Saying you want to go to SF from regiment is very frowned upon as well but most leaders there.
In SF, it's a small team hence "team guy" environment. More often you're treated like an adult, and entrusted to execute. This is great but it also lends itself to complacency. Each team room has their own mission set, and culture. Some times the Sf mission suck as opposed to being assigned DA missions. To a degree, group has its own conventional army "isms" but overall- it's a better life and opportunity. More pay, more advanced school opportunities and you'll get to see more behind the veil than rangers.
Correction- rangers are not tier 1. Just a small element within. Not every ranger is equal in qualifications or ability or even job and position. Sf is no different. Each group, each team, and each specialty has their own unique personalities.
Also- ranger school is just that a qualification--- but it is not a cake walk. It definitely is not for the faint of heart.
Buck appreciate your outputs but I think more light should be shined on why regiment believes it's better than SF.

      Victor,
I’m at 18 1/2 years as a 74D, if you can get option 40 take it! You’ll get exposed to a lot more technical and tactical training within the SOF community. On the conventional side if you’re not in a CBRN unit you will not really perform your job you’ll be stuck maintaining and issuing equipment. You will not train on CBRN task as intel drives missions and the focus is elsewhere. If you can stay within Regiment or get to an SF CRD/CDD or even an SMU as a CBRN dude it will be a lot more fulfilling/rewarding.

74Ds in Ranger battalion are assigned to the DRT team (decon/recon teams) composed of 6-10 guys. I’ll be honest, they don’t do a whole lot overseas.
