One strike to get ignition with flint and steel, I'd say it was a testiment to how good that punk charred up, but frankly, I think you're just that good. Big thanks once again for a great video, all the other firetubers i've seen put so much emphasis on close fitting lidded boxes and perfect air seals to make char, you demonstrating it with a can with the lid sawn off with a knife really shows what can be done.
That's fascinating, it's exactly what every other firetuber i've seen do a char-tin setup has pushed as their ideology. Given your track record, I'm going to trust you 100% on this. (I want to do side by side tests of my own now!)@@DavidWestBgood2ppl
Love that stuff! BTW, even though I like stuffing cooked inside a bird or dressing cooked in a casserole dish, I still love me some of that good ol' Stove Top Stuffing Mix too.
I worked cranberry harvest here in Wisconsin for 13 years. As a kid, I liked the jellied cranberry, but now I make my own sauce. I do like it better. Anyway, that was a very interesting process. You make it look so easy. Now I need to go make a fire in my woodstove. It is getting chilly on this Fall evening in the north woods.
I make my homage with cranberry juice coctail instead of water and it makes a big difference. And BTW, years ago the NRA used to publish a list of corporations which donated to take away our Second Amendment rights. Ocean Spray was among the leaders, so I never buy their products. My local grocery chain sells jellied their house brand sauce equal to Ocean Spray and their own brand of fresh cranberries too to make my own sauce with.
After all the years watching you, I have yet to locate and char punk wood! That’s gonna change before the snow falls! Done most all that you’ve taught….but that one…. P.S. I cringe when I see a knife blade cutting tin😖…even a Stanley!
Not sure if anyone mentioned it already, but try using a side cutter style can opener. I take the can and punch a hole top and bottom in the center. Then get a 1/4x18(or 1/4x20) bolt and wingnut. The can has enough gap around the bolt hole on top to vent. Wing nut gives a little extra to grab when removing from the fire. God bless. 🙏🏼🇺🇸👍🔥
Another great video. Thank you for the information. I will be trying that very soon. By the way have you ever tried a peanut butter and cranberry sauce sandwich? They are fantastic. Give it a try.
Hi David, thank you for your good educational videos. Please send me the link of the video where we teach how to make a fire starter with old pants lee fabric, thank you.
I've charred punk wood several times. It doesn't take a ember easily. It takes many repeated strikes landing on it to finally catch an ember and then it tends to be on only the very small light pieces of punk wood. Many times it catches a small ember ( flint and steel but goes right out within a second or two. It's a bit puzzling. Maybe I needed to cook it longer.
Question Dave! And you've probably already addressed this somewhere but, would it be worth-while, dropping one of those tiny "silica cel or gel" moisture absorber packs; like what comes in most everything nowadays, down in the "char jar"? i.e. with new shoes etc.
Maybe it would help if you didn’t cut the lid completely off the can so you could bend it back inside afterwards and keep it from tilting inside during the charring process.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl Neither am I. It actually reminds me of one of my late father’s little jokes he trotted out every time he bought out his pen knife to cut some fruit or food wrapping open when we were kids. “It’s alright, I licked it clean last time I used it”!😂

Very nice fall day splitting wood while watching my fire guru. Wonderful day.
You make everything look so easy. Thank you.
I've been enjoying this hobby for 10 years now.

Lots of venting allows gases to escape easier producing a cleaner char that is more reactive.

Love cranberry sauce "with the lines in it", great with what we call dressin'
Love that stuff! BTW, even though I like stuffing cooked inside a bird or dressing cooked in a casserole dish, I still love me some of that good ol' Stove Top Stuffing Mix too.

Homemade is really good too.

It sharpens back with ease. TY!

BÆRSkin Hoodies. I will probably get one.

Master fire maker
Good demonstration David, thanks for sharing, God bless !
Thanks for watching!
Im DOING IT! .....Tomorrow! Tks
Have fun!
Ocean spray is essential at my house on Thanksgiving wouldn't be complete without the Stanley those are some tough blades
I meant to get that across. Those blades sharpen right back up with ease.

No, might.

Always wondered why ocean spray cran sauce labels are always upside down, even here in Canada.

Charcoal acts like what you're describing. You have to start with punkwood that is spongy like in the video. See my char playlist.

Lots of people do. Probably a good idea.
Maybe it would help if you didn’t cut the lid completely off the can so you could bend it back inside afterwards and keep it from tilting inside during the charring process.
I've tried it. An attached lid can gap just as much. As the can expands and contorts in the heat it will make a gap.
So would this work for char cloth as well?
Yes, any char.
1:42 Did you really replace your knife in your pocket before cleaning off the sticky mess?😮
It passed across my lips. I am not afraid of eating with a sharp knife.

See, fruit shaped like a can!
Real cranberry sauce is so much better and not much more work.
I love that too.
