ABOUT THIS VIDEO
Join me for a detailed breakdown of how to create the Monster Growl Bass from Michael Jackson's iconic song "Thriller". I programmed this big "phat" swooping bass sound on a Minimoog Model D synthesizer while in the room with Michael, album producer Quincy Jones, songwriter Rod Temperton and keyboard player Greg Phillinganes. We'll get into all the settings that you'll need to know whether you have a hardware synth or plug-in. Also, the techniques I discuss about creating sounds can be applied to any style of music.
This sound occurs only one time in the song (at the end of the bridge) but serves as an important example about thinking dramatically when arranging and orchestrating. Rod Temperton employed this mind set when orchestrating and arranging throughout the Thriller album. Every sound serves a specific function that's related to the sound(s) before it and that's related to the listeners emotions. This is key lesson I learned working with Quincy and Rod. In this case the Monster Growl Bass is a one-time featured sound that kicks off the ever elevating and evolving 2nd half of the song.

I've went back and listened to the original recording and I have to say: I just have never noticed that sound and now I can't live without it, haha! I think it's fascinating though how much these subtle sounds can make a difference once considering the entire song.
MJ was very fortunate to have Anthony, Greg and other great keyboardists/synthesists on Team Thriller!
Quincey Jones is the master of putting the right people together.
@@StatetrooperBillyBill unfortunately if you don't play on a record, arrange or produce you will not get mentioned. A.M designed the sounds that were used on several of the songs but I don't think that he actually played anything.
Does it mention someone called curly, I think that's his nickname.
For me Anthony‘s Sound Design plus the amazing Performance by Greg is a huge Part how i perceive the whole Thriller Album. They should be Millionaires ❤️ Thank you so much ✨

For people like me who have a passion for history in sound design and sounds used in famous/legendary songs, i have no words to say how much i love your channel. Thank u so much . Cheers from France, Philippe
My first acoustic contact with Michael Jackson‘s music was in the late 80s as a kid. We bought the „Making of Thriller“ VHS and I remember how scary the short film was but at the same time absolutely fascinating! When MJ rehearsed his dance routines there are also songs featured like P.Y.T. or Off The Wall. And watching the source for some of these magnificent sounds played live, by the man who programmed it on the original session instruments like the ARP is mind blowing!
I think your lesson are being to really sink in with me, personally over the last few months my sound scape is the best it's ever been. Thanks A.M. ❤
It's a great thing that after all these years, I now know the backstage secrets of the best hits of my youth. We watched and listened to them with open mouths on Music Television every day!
I was someone who used to take music for granted as I grew up but your channel has opened my eyes to the creative processes involved to make those great sounds. Since subscribing to your videos i now have a whole new appreciation of music and I thank you for that.
Great work and another great video.
It’s crazy too think that most of my favorite songs that are on a synthesizer are on a minimoog 🤩
Wow already over 100k subs. I joined in fairly early on. Nice work.
Amazing Anthony! I know everybody says it but your knowledge and willingness to share is not only rare but very inspiring. Thank you!!!
Not sure if there is much to discuss in a video but one on human nature would be awesome, I always loved the intro sounds and especially the sound that goes up, almost a turning on sound. I have no other way to describe it other than it comes in at around the 4 second mark. Keep up the good work regardless!
Another superb history lesson into iconic sounds and the real artists behind our favourite music. Just BRILLIANT 👍👍
Iconic sounds that have scored my day to day life. You are an absolute wealth of knowledge. Thanks for letting us into your world dude.
Moog sounds like magic
Thank you Anthony for sharing this with us. 🙏🏻

another great show Anthony. Best content out there in RUclips land.
Very amazing how much work, thought and fine-tuning goes into this.
This is beautiful
Thank you Anthony
Love it, great video as usual.
Great Stuff, as usual 🎹🎚
Italy is waiting for the monster! 🍾😊
Another perfect humanization of a machine.
The sounds around the 2 minute mark really reminded me of "Being Boiled" by the Human League.
I wonder whether they used the same synth and similar settings.
Absolutely great! Thanks a lot! ❤❤❤
Its thrilling to see AM sharing his legendary approach to synth with us, and especially with the younger generation of music producers and synthesists because that means this legacy can continue on for future generations. 🌞🌞🌞 Imagine a hundred years from now what analog crazy digital controlled analog synths might sound like.
Very cool!!
All these explanatory terms are still way above my head; I just really love synthesized music
Trust me you can get there.
It's these little details that help to make a wonderful track AWESOME!!!
Thanks Anthony, Killer vid as usual! 😎😎
Thank you much for sharing this!
Thank you Anthony! Another great history lesson! I will try this on my Minimoog Voyager ❤
Fantastic breakdown
Love the red marks.. ☺
Now you have to do the synth clavinet on the Jupiter 4 🤩🙂
Awesome.
❤this so iconic fashion Anthony... Again Mutch love from BIL NSW Australasian outsider superflat artist...
thank you for this !!
Amazing!
I'm just here at work on my break enjoying this video ☕
That was awesome
thus producing a metaphysical situation where memories (call them digital memory or analog memory) encounter each other's spectra - almost like two ships passing in the night or the infinite mirror the child fascinated at the local mall sees when it looks into that chrome-like vastness of the department store elevator.
I’d love to see you play with Phase Plant!
Энтони! Ты крут!! Браво!!!
Thanks Anthony! I recall being gobsmacked by Thiller when i was a kid. I used to jam the Cass back to back in my fire engine-red boombox. going to try this bass fx patch on my Sub37. I've done monster sawbass on it before. always Sounds nice. of course, for the right portamento I have to switch up and then down an octave because of the 37. no big deal ;) I am a big fan of the Thoroughness to your patch breakdowns. Def appreciate any further patch breakdowns 🙏
Amazing🎉🎉
i am waiting for it haha
Hello Anthony, thanks for the sound design video ! :)
I'm very interested about watching the video mentionned at 8:40 but i can't find it anywhere on youtube... Is it split into several videos ? Is it out yet ?
Sorry for the dumb question, there is maybe something i didn't understand since i'm not a native english speaker
Anyways, thanks again for everything ! ❤
I remember Rick Wakeman praising the Minimoog because it was the first instrument in his rig that could «cut through concrete» when playing solo’s over loud guitars live. The sound demonstrated here is a perfect example of this. It gets really loud without using any outboard effects.
I think it's basically the same sound as Rick Wright used it on Welcome to the Machine, he just added more delay. It's a really great sound which for me is always connected to the Moog-Sound. Probably that's why Antony did on the Mini and not on the ARP?`
Ok...do the Primevil patch...or the Bogg.....love your synth stuff..
Fascinating! 👍(The picture at 8:12 is Michael with Steven Spielberg, though, not Rod Temperton)
Good catch!
Please do another jam session video 🙌🙌🙌
Man I love your videos. I am going to try to recreate the sound on my Matriarch this weekend.
💛💛💛
Interesting ❤❤❤
Anthony and his awesome team.Who knew.Behind all great music...ive heard...ARP2600...etc.
Long live the Minimoog! Yours has the green switches that are normally blue, I have seen this before on other Minis. DId Moog use that color at some point in production or did they turn green from blue? Thanks Anthony.
❤❤
Harmonics never go below the root note
❤❤❤❤
So very very nice! Thank you so much, Anthony! ❤
I have one question. Would you try to recreate the Thriller bass on the Jupiter-8 for us? Pleeeeeease 😅 Because if you make it, you would hear that this was the bass instrument and not the ARP2600. An the chorus synth was the Jupiter-8 aswell. Your guide helps building the sounds, but you will hear an „Ahaaaaa“ with the Jupiter-8 😊 And if you don‘t believe me, I‘ll send to you my Arturia patch ;)
Where can I find the video with you and Greg recreating thriller?
Can you dedicate a show to stacking sounds? I mean with midi you can use like 8 synthesizers (or more) to combine sounds. Wasn't that the power of 90's hits?
Anthony I can't find your recreation of Thriller
Whaaaa?
Hello Anthony Marineli im Andrei ❤❤❤❤ you guys thought me how to play the Bass On a keyboard i got casio 100 tones and i can play it. Love from Luton.
Sorry. Also, Anthony, I confess to not having seen this one! 'Lost one important nugget in last thread (re - re - re) regarding spirituality (or lack thereof! - i.e. - Ghosts in the Machine(s)! Hopefully this explains a little better the bit about Emaneul Swedenborg.
:)
Guess what I will be doing tonight.
