The lyrics of the Rush song "Freewill" comes to mind.
(You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill.)
I was thinking the same thing.
Greatest words of wisdom ever bestowed on me "You may choose your choices, but your choices choose your consequences." The freedom is yours but for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction and the human mind is great as construing unintended consequences as having meaning besides a physics equation balancing the books.
While those are some great words to live by, isn't it flawed a little? I mean when most people make their CHOICES, those CHOICES are based on the CONSEQUENCES associated with their respected CHOICES. Yes sometimes choices have consequences that we would never have fathomed would occur, but still yet, our choices are based on the consequences associated with them. Unless you're the type of person who doesn't give much thought into things, that is.
Orlando I.
I would venture the guess that the majority of humanity today are those who make choices without putting much thought into things. Hence, why world affairs are in the state they are in. I believe the mass of humankind has devolved to little more than animals, addicted to pushing buttons and acting on physical impulses.
Orlando I. Really though it is impossible to predict the future, there are too many variables for any particular outcome to any one action. Some times good intentions breed horror, some times selfish intentions breed glory. So it really comes down to probable outcomes. You just have to analyze the probabilities. At some point even the most remote possibility becomes inevitable, Like a slot machine it will eventually hit jackpot. So the real question is "Do I feel lucky." Hopefully you do.
Kevin Kiker
From this convo I've realized that acting based on the consequences of choices is bad faith because we are acting upon an unknowable. The choice must always be the end in itself. Risking your life to save your family sounds like Good Faith but the outcome is still uncertain so why do it? Anyone could argue a million reasons why it is good or bad to still do it but its all conjecture. For a choice like that and for all minor choices, the choice IS the consequence. Do something to do it; don't do something because...
Kevin Kiker Too many variables for us, perhaps. Never know whether there's something in existence that has no trouble at all handling all of them.
Also, I predict the Sun will rise tomorrow. I'm not analyzing any probabilities. Just predicting based on experience. I'll bet a very large sum on it ;)
(yes, I know, the Sun doesn't actually "rise," the Earth rotates, etc. You know what I mean, though)
Amazing video guys! Please keep running this philosophy series. Making intellectual and existential considerations this accessible is a beautiful rarity. Keep up the good work!
I love these videos! Explained in such a simple yet profound way. Thank you so much for them. Please keep making these videos, they are amazing!
I really enjoy these 8 bit philosophies, Keep em coming!
These are freaking great. I just wish you took more time with them (making them longer) and maybe tackled some more advanced, complicated ideas and theories. Thus far these have been pretty entry level stuff. :)
Very interesting and thought provoking series. In my opinion, Philosophy Tube and you are the only decent channels about philosophy on RUclips right now. Keep up the awesome work! :)
Really, folks, you had one of the most amazing ideas ever! Keep doing them pls!

Well done! Thanks for the video
Love to see one on Spinoza in the near future.
This is the best series on RUclips.
Another fantastic video :D
Freedom is oft rendered unenjoyable by the paradox of choice. They say if you give someone too much rope they'll inevitably hang themselves, but really, give someone too much freedom, then they'll be so consumed by possibilities that they'll do nothing: abundant freedom can become a prison.
I love this series.
The great thing about free will is we can make our own choices, the bad thing about it is that we have to live with those choices.
Perhaps the best video-game incorporated 8-bit Philosophy so far.
Awesome series!
this was really well done
This is a fantastic channel.
Really awesome. Can you please make one on whether there is such thing as good and evil.
"Isn't choosing not to choose also a choice?"
...
shiiiiiiii
Neil Peart thinks so.
great work, keep it up
Yessss♡ the power of the mind. The realization that life is in your hands, you define your reality through your thoughts and decisions! Choose love and positivity.

To quote Rush: If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice" ~ Freewill
Got kind of confused towards the end but great vid keep it up
I like that - "Existence precedes essence". You're born, and then you choose who you want to be. You are what you've done basically. And none of us are ever finished. I like that a whole lot better really than the idea that we spring in to the world with some roadmap already programmed in to our heads.
Hey, I have just stumbled upon this channel today, because I was talking to someone and I mentioned Sartre, I asked him if he knew about Sartre, and he did. I asked him about it, and he referred to this channel.
Just awesome :D
These are great.
Very nice! :)
These are great
I believe that we do have an amazing power to choose our actions and create our own identity. I must admit that it would be easier to let someone else make our choices, but in doing so, we would still be choosing to live by their choice.
It is true, choice is impossible to escape.
Great video
the allegory at the beggining of the video is genius
What man can say what is bad? What man can say what is good? If there is such a man able to decide what is bad or good his judgement defines nothing. Only a person can decide what is or is not good or bad. However one person can decide for another who also has the powers to decide
"if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice." I already learned this stuff from a band called rush
love this
Awesome!
I think I just found my new favorite thing.
Damn that was heavy!!!!!
Take my like, you brillant one.
Interesting. I don't quite agree with Satre, but I do like the use of Final Fantasy to explain it. :)
I lived most of my life in bad faith, assuming that a God controlled everything and would put me where I had to be when I needed to be there. After I gave up that fairy tale and started making choices of my own, I actually started getting somewhere.
Welcome to the club. It's good to have you with us.
Keep in mind that the fact that god does not exsist is the philosopher personal belief. I for one do believe in a god but I also believe Im free to do what I want. But what I personaly hate is when someone says they have no choice when in reality they have many although the most officent option is the most obviouse theirby they think they have no choice. Example their are three doors one red blue and green. Someone says the red door is dangerous blue is empty and the green leads to your destination. You may think you have no choice but to choose the green but in reality your just making a smart desicion
You see, the fact that you said "Welcome to the club, it's good to have you with us" implies that all life is is some gigantic Us Vs. Them fight, and the antithesis of of what philosophy is about.
Also, it sounds really fucking stupid.
FAiRY TaLe of SHeePle PuSSies
2:09 the HP says 1986/2014, and this was uploaded in 2014, so I wonder if one of the creators of this was born in 1986
Enjoy is subjective and relative. People are free to do as they will, or are ( physically) allowed and their will always be choice.
It has been said in the comments that laws inhibit freedoms. However laws only add consequence to action, they do not actually restrict the available choice. The only way to really restrict choice is by physical restraints: like tying someone to a tree, or murder which is the greatest form restricting freedom as the murdered person will never make a choice again. Possible consequences are different from actual restrictions but there are natural physical restrictions to our choices as well. I can not, for example, fly, or go without breathing. These physical restraints limit our freedoms to some extent, so a person could never be 100% free. That being said people do tend to strive to give up their freedom, constantly trying to push responsibility for ones actions onto someone or something else as justification. Or just following the flow of life and not making choices to do more or do different the the situation before you suggests you should do.
I love his way !
"Of course we are free, we have no choice to be otherwise" - Christopher Hitchens
These are cool. Do one on Wittgenstein!
thank you
Missed a golden opportunity at 1:31 to use the final fight from 'Double Dragon'.
Please don't ever end this series. Too *snicker* godlike, but seriously don't ever end it.
Coming back 8 years later to say that unfortunately they have stopped these a while ago. 😢 They definitely should come back with them
Amazing

To anyone who has ever taken or is in the IB program all of the 8 Bit Philosophy episodes are TOK moments, and what not.
Are we ever actually free? If freedom is having the ability to define ourselves by the choices we make in our lives, then we are not free. We are constantly being judged by people other than ourselves, which tends to inevitably cause us to make personal decisions that cater to the opinions of those people. Thus, we are acting in bad faith because we are not making decisions based on individual autonomy, but acting as someone else's perceived judgement of who we are.
Partially Examined Which is what Sartre also noticed, hence ''Hell is other people'' because it is ourselves and other people that makes us act in bad faith.
Partially Examined People's percieved judgement change with their own selves and they change with your actions. No-one can see who you truly are because your self is never defined.
Partially Examined Actually, by the definition you give, you ARE free. Others may define you differently than you define yourself, but your definition doesn't correspond to others, it corresponds to YOU defining YOURSELF. Now, you may have a different definition than someone else of yourself, but that doesn't mean you didn't define yourself. You are simply failing to convey your definition to others. (Just as different people have different opinions on what the definition of "Intelligence" is, but that doesn't mean no one defined Intelligence...they just aren't used by everyone.)
And truly, more often than not, we act based on our what we *think* others think of us, when really, not a damned person cares, the vast majority of the time.
+Partially Examined I.E Hell is other people
Love it
fantastic
ok, now I know, I can't watch more than a couple of these because my brain fucking HURTS!
I miss this series.
lets get one of these on de sade or stirner.
I don't know why it helps, but learning in 8-bit makes it stick better, somehow. Thank you for making these!
love it
That last part, though. "But is choosing not to choose not also a choice?" Confusing alliteration is confusing.
There is no freewill involved in Red Mage. Everybody knows that Red Mage is always the wrong decision.
Humans are adaptable animals. That is why when the situation gets rough people are so adept at being bad. People will more often pick survival over goodness. We are lifting ourselves up from desperation and with this we will see our better nature.

"If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice!... I will choose free will!"
A good argument against the very strong determinism argument.
Blew my mind
STAHP WITH THE MADNESS!
