- September 29th, 2023, will be etched in New York City's history as the day the skies opened with an unparalleled ferocity. The deluge was so intense that JFK Airport recorded its highest 24-hour rainfall since 1948, with an astonishing 8 inches pouring down.
Brooklyn faced nature's fury head-on, as three hours of ceaseless rain equaled an entire month's average downpour. Witness water roaring into basements, stranded vehicles, and impassable roads that brought the Big Apple to a standstill.
This video dives deep into the heart of the devastation, spotlighting the worst affected regions like Brooklyn and Long Island. From shattered rainfall records to streets that became rivers, experience the magnitude of NYC's epic flood crisis. They are seriously some of my favorite people to interview. #1 will always be Cajuns south of I-10 in Louisiana though.
@JonathanPetramala yes I know a ton of people from Louisiana. I honestly felt they were not prepared and obivouous to the true danger they were in. This girl saying she saying she was rushing to get to work is crazy, I'm sorry I'm calling in and not risking my life or vehicle.

I live in Brooklyn, in the area you filmed. I cried watching this video. We are one floor up but my downstairs neighbors flooded and we helped them. I went to Prospect Park yesterday after 8 straight days of rain. It was sunny and everyone was happy but everyone was talking about the rain and how scary it was. Seeing this helps me realize how dangerous it was. I’m so thankful that I’m OK and that I didn’t choose a garden apartment.
Glad you and your neighbors are ok!
Garden apartment?!! What sort of newspeak is this? I thought they were basement or subfloor apartments which of course come with a high flood risk.

Yes!! Helping but also very nice! 💓
It’s what makes the news…the bad that people do…
Over here in Germany it is getting worse with people. Sometimes I think, we need a bigger (global?) catastrophy, so people wake up and realize, we have to work together.
I love how ----- no matter how deep and quickly flowing the water becomes ----- there are always some knuckleheads in vehicles thinking, "Yeah! All right! We can do this!" and then they all end up having to be rescued.
Not to mention the expensive repair bill that will not be covered by their warranty!
Some? Looked like alot
Expensive lesson when the engine hydrolocks bending a rod or going right through the block.

People are dumb.
This is a powerful piece of storytelling - especially given the speed with which you brought it to RUclips. You tell a compelling story and stay out of the way of the camera. This is clearly about the people featured and not so much about you and your reactions. THe scenes of strangers coming together to solve problems in real time with real consequences is good medicine for so many feelings of division and conflict in the majority of media and mindset these days. How they bent their backs and pushed with mighty force to calmly escort the stalled cars to shallower waters was inspiring. Also, your conversation with the woman reaching into the muck with her bare hands to clear the drains and your conversation and suggestion that she take a shower soon was telling. It might be gross to go further into it but I think necessary for people to understand how much waste, sewage and other dangerous things are swirling about at their ankles in these situations. Blessings on you and all New Yorkers.
I appreciate your feedback! Thanks for watching!
Jonathan, thank you for the incredible film footage you put together in this documentary short. And, thanks for helping some of the folks you came across during the filming. What you captured on film clearly shows just how ill-prepared many cities, towns and hamlets are when it comes to proper water/sewage drainage. Thanks again.

It was encouraging to see someone actually clearing the storm drains. Flood water management works wayy better when it's not clogged with garbage.
Yep! I don't mind clearing them before major storms on my street but people come out acting guilty af.
We get too much lightning to go out during the rain and prevention helps. The city would require repeated drain clearing.
Exactly! It goes beyond that, too... it's important to pick up garbage anytime you see it. When the floods come, it all gets washed into the drains and clogs them up. Pick it up before it causes a problem.
This is why this happened. LOL at people crying climate change, when NYC has one of the worst sewage systems in the entire US.

I’m glad you helped
No one expects rainfall like this so they don’t have protective clothing
Walking around in floodwater in normal clothing can cause people to get very sick
Many people don’t realize that floods don’t just happen from blocked storm drains, the drainage areas can be so flooded that the sewage mixes with the rain water and flows throughout a large area above ground
This is an excellent point. Never wade through flood waters if you don't have to!
No one one expects anything! Because a big part of our global society is ignorant, and the leadership of big corporations and in politics that does know cold care, but doesn't - for the sake of short-term benefits and growth. Yet, humanity got warned in 1972 by the Club of Rome, or Rachel Carson. We could have done a lot in this 50 years. And now we start to see the results. Simple physics! Expect more storms and heavier floods, in the future!

Such a shame for the people living in those cool below ground apartments. I have seen videos featuring them and if they got flooded that really sucks for people living in them!!
Repent! Follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, this is the wrath of God
This climate change thing is pure BS, what caused these floods was the dirt in the city, the fault of a piggy and careless mayor who lets garbage accumulate and obstruct the drainage routes and block the path of the water. This is a thing for Democratic governments.
People should be warned that driving through deep flood water can short out the car's entire electrical system. It's very dangerous at night because you can't tell how deep it is. You won't be able to unlock the doors or roll down any windows and you get trapped. If the car drifts into deeper waters, you will drown. If you ever find yourself in this situation, break the glass of the door with a blunt object - or remove the headrest from your seat. Most importantly, aim at the corners of the glass. Stay safe out there.

No, they need to stay off the roads. That depth of water damages a car's electronics, and it's unsafe. They likely called their friends instead. That's why we have phones.
@@cacatr4495 Oh.......Everyone Disabled in NY????
Cant Folk Walk? Are NY citizens dependent on Vehicles?
Going off like it's a Round trip across the Nation 🤦♂️

Walking in deep water is also unsafe, due to unseen dangers in the water, and pollutants from cars, etc. Where I live (all my life), we have normally had severe flooding every summer through the monsoon season, so I know the dangers. If they can call their friends on the phone, it's much better judgement than being out in the deep water.
@@cacatr4495 Wow!!
So other than Excuses
You don't know what Waders are?
You don't have Paved roads......Sounds like some Serious Potholes in Your lands!
And Last but not Least You don't know what a Wash involves..... Cleansing of Contamination/Dirt Off the Body
Easily said when everyone has a Mobile phone.......Land line Cut due to Flooding🙊
Although Most importantly Your Phone has Credit🙊
Amazing job. You really see what happened, so much better than a typical local TV station report.
This happed 10 yrs ago there poor management of taxmoney
Damn that’s wild! NY been going through some shit these past few years from Earthquakes to Hurricanes to Rain Floods.
From Brazil here in Sao Paulo I have seen some, but for the past 10 years it is getting worse. I always found the under the level apartments kinda charming in NYC suburbs, actually most houses looks like it siding with doors. Now see it underwater is heart braking.
Loved the coming together in times of need. Thanks 🙏🏽 to and for everyone who helped. 🙌🏽 🫶🏽
THE MILITARY SHOULD BE DOING THIS!! THIS IS DISGUSTING NEW YORK ABANDONED BY OUR OWN GOVERNMENT

Wow just wow. Sending prayers to everyone in NYC. And the gentlemen who were helping motorist on their street who kept trying to drive through they are kind, generous heroes, the motorist should rethink traveling during this time
