Robyn Hitchcock is a rabbit hole you will never regret going down...

Some Robyn Hitchcock is always welcome to my ears. He reminds me of those mad Englishmen of old, incredibly inventive.

I hope you'll look further into Robyn Hitchcock, a marvelously surreal song painter. "Madonna Of The Wasps", "One Long Pair Of Eyes", "Virginia Woolf", "Glass Hotel", "Balloon Man", I could go on and on. If you hear even one of those I'll be thrilled.

You have been diving into Robyn Hitchcock before, when you did the full album reaction to Soft Boys' "Underwater Moonlight", where Robyn is lead vocalist and wrote pretty much all of the songs.
I love this song, which is Robyn at his most Monty Python-esque. But I'm not sure the spoken word parts have anything at all to do with the rest of the lyrics. It may just have been Robyn's way of creating some emotional distance (for himself) to the main story by messing things up and being silly.

You've heard Robyn's former band, The Soft Boys, before. A veteran of what could best be described as surreal folk rock, he is an amazing and very worthwhile rabbithole to venture down. If it helps sway you, many XTC fans also swear by this guy, myself among them, and he was a major influence on REM, too. His album "Element of Light" is worthy of a full album review, IMO. You will not be disappointed! FWIW, this was an odd one to start with - I'd have gone with "One Long Pair of Eyes", "So You Think You're In Love", or "Airscape"... and Featherstonehaugh is pronounced "Fanshaw" :)

I really like this listening to people's favourite songs. I may or may not enjoy the song but it gives a new variety outside of the usual fare that gets listened to. Something about the first part of the song (probably the lead singers voice and delivery) reminds
    me of The Decemberists.

I do love me some Robyn Hitchcock, maybe not for everyone or all the time but he's a deep talent and a hellofa nice guy. I'd love for you to listen to "The Yip Song" off his 'Respect' album. He also did an EP (Planet England) with Andy Partridge that's a fun listen.

If only I could remember everything, I could cast the first stone at you, JP! To my clear loss, based on this listen, I've never chased up Robyn Hitchcock despite long knowing he was the one speaking the words in and at the end of Thomas Dolby's White City. His singing voice has passed me a few times - having never stopped to linger beside it, thank you for helping to point out it's a good one.👍

While 'Queen Elvis' is one of my favorite albums (#54 on my Top 100 list), this song has never done a whole lot for me. It's songs like "Madonna Of The Wasps", "Knife", "Superman" and "One Long Pair Of Eyes" that make this a standout album for me. I don't mind this song, but I kinda wish that it ended the album rather than "Superman". It would have made it so easy to skip it when I only had it on cassette. LOL!
It's really not a bad song. Just one of the weaker ones on the album. But that's just my opinion, for what that may be worth.

      The Soft Boys!
A Can Of Bees is a great album as well.
Invisible Hits is a great compilation of their singles also!

Oh nice! This album, Queen Elvis, is really good :) there's quite a bit of other good Robyn Hitchcock out there, too! You might also try 'Balloon Man', 'Flesh Number One (Beatle Dennis)', or for earlier stuff, 'Do Policemen SIng?' or his homage to his inspiration Syd Barrett, 'The Man Who Invented Himself'. :)

This is another musician that journalists like to speculate as to maybe what Syd Barrett might have sounded like if he had continued.

The Smiths? No. It's hard to get a bead on Robyn with one track - his catalog is so diverse, but every sone so inimitably Hitchcock. He's witty, surrealistic, darkly wry, transcendent, and hysterically humorous. You thought far too hard about analyzing the story - it's more like a stream of consciousness dream, it's the energy of it that counts. He's a unique genius, no doubt about it - give him 5 more chances at least, then you might start to see the outlines of his masterful bonkers way of flipping the top of your head off until light spills in, laughing or crying or melting. Thanks for playing this anyway, it's a outstanding track, but in no way representative, any more than any other one song of his. Think of the Beatles, such a broad span of musical ideas, but once you know them, you see their essence in every one, and see the genius there. I'm not exactly comparing them - Hitchcock's more of an outlier and acquired taste, though he is a personal favorite, and I see his depth and flair putting him really up there objectively.

I sooo love Robyn's surreal poetry. But my personal fave of this is learning the proper spelling of "Fanshaw". When I did a search of "how to pronounce Featherstonehaugh" it said; "the T is silent". 🤣🤣🤣
If more Robyn tickles your fancy, I'd suggest anything off of "Element of Light" or "Fegmania!".

I love Robyn Hitchcock, but am a bit perplexed why this song was suggested over many others.
Robyn had a collaboration w/ Andy Partridge of XTC recently w/ an EP called Planet England.

As far as the story, seemed to be (from my perspective) synapses firing randomly among some guys well into more than a few drinks or whatever, and likely some truths slipping out. Loved the song, which altogether created a mood that resonated with me. It's one I don't recall having heard. Your attempt to pick through the rap sections in this case actually seemed to draw out and add to the conversation happening within the song. Interesting reaction.

Appreciate your channel for tapping the 80s obscura like the batty Robyn H., but if you're going to do an Autumn-themed track out of season, it should have been Evidence of Autumn by Genesis!

Robyn have many better songs than Autumn Sea.

The Decemberists are heavily influenced by Robyn Hitchcock. Colin Meloy got his guitar chops as a teenager covering Robyn's songs, and was a guest musician on Hitchcock's Goodnight Oslo album. Robyn returned the favour by guesting on The Hazards of Love.
