DARK CORNERS OF THIS SICK WORLD S06E14 - Развлечения
For years I thought the cop in this movie was Cameron Mitchell, and also that he played John Waynes murdered brother in The Searchers. In both roles, that was actually Walter Coy, who could have played Mitchell's twin brother in any movie, as far I'm concerned.
I like how the snake-eye's view is the same effect used in IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE.
Kathleen Hugues (Julia) was in ICFOS too.
1:06 That's Edward Platt, the Chief from Get Smart! :D
Faith Domergue (pronounced "Dah-mure," I'm told) had a foreign look about her as 50s B-movie leading ladies go, but she was from Louisiana originally and brought up in California. She is best remembered today for Cult of the Cobra, This Island Earth, and It Came from Beneath the Sea. I first saw her films as a kid, on TV, so I grew up calling her "Faith Dom-er-uck".
She's awesome
You should see her in WHERE DANGER LIVES, saw her in that and instantly fell in love.
i'll always remember this film for having that girl from "This Island Earth" in it. :p
that girl, was Faith Domergue, but how would you know that . Since you probably grew up in another era.
the entire film is completely redeemable because of that scene of Faith Doumergue eating a hotdog with gloves on.
I like this flick a lot. Always have since I first saw it on Sir Graves Ghastly Presents back in 1969. It works if you approach it on the level, specifically, of it being a horror FANTASY film rather than a gothic or classically themed horror movie. Great review. Thanks !
This film is an accidental gold mine for Classic TV fans. Cast members include David Janssen (The Fugitive, Harry O), Richard Long (The Big Valley), Jack Kelly (Maverick), William Reynolds (The FBI) and Marshall Thompson (Daktari).
Midland Redux I wanted to make the same comment. In addition, I spotted Edward Platt who played the chief on get smart (1965 to 1970). He is the one who places the curse on the GIs.
Can’t believe you didn’t mention Richard long was also in nanny and the professor 😀
Missed David Jansen but remembered the others, thanks for that.
And don't forget Edward Platt as The Chief!
I'd consider dumping an alligator into a swimming pool full of politicians.
the poor alligator, it'll be torn to pieces
And one of the politicians comes out of it with a new pair of leather boots.
Terrible thing to do to an alligator
A 1960s 30-inch 📺 set
Oh, damn, is that high priest the Chief of Control? Sorry about that, chief!
+watchwaddle Ha! You're right! I never realized. Missed it by *that* much!
Too bad he didn't have the Cone of Silence back then. He wouldn't have heard when they came to ask him to be in this movie.
Edward Platt! A name that will live in trivia. He did a ton of work in the 50s and 60s, including parts in "Rebel Without a Cause" and "North By Northwest". Then again, he also played a crook who plays a priest in a Godawful caper film set on a cross-country train: "The Rebel Set". It also includes Don Sullivan, the Elvis-wannabe in "The Giant Gila Monster"! The Fifties were NOT a Golden Age...

You forget the High Priest in Atlantis The Lost Continent (1961) by George Pal
The scientist in me wants to know what was meant by "asphyxiation by snake venom".
Perhaps paralysis of the diaphragm to prevent breathing.
Thanks Donald. Good explanation.
G.I.s and Cobra but no cool battles or weather dominator, I feel cheated.
Ughhhh i remember this movie, i stayed up half the night when i was younger and at around 3 in the morning after the movie was over i think it was tcm i was watching any way it on played the leopard man after this one. So in 2016 or 17 could you guys do the leopard man from 1943
I really like the scene with the tea kettle. Also I'm a huge RICHARD LONG fan
It's a shame we actually don't get many movies inspired by the snake goddess Lamia - I would actually like to see a vastly superior modern update on this one. Lamia according to legend was a Libyan goddess seduced by Zeus whose children were destroyed by Hera, and as a result went on a man-hating vendetta in which children were also targets. Frequently compared to the Hebrew legend of Lilith, and even regarded as one of the world's first vampires, Lamia was blamed for any disease and/or death that ancient science and medicine couldn't explain or cure, and often parents had to place certain charms and amulets over their babies' cribs to try to protect them from Lamia.
The anime Monster Musume led me to this movie as it features a lamia, a snake woman, as one of its monster girls... and I was not disappointed with the movie.
Yes, I have to give some concessions to what a 50s movie could show of a lamia and how one could pass off as a human woman and how Hollywood handled nudity, by going full evening gown naturally...
OK, mostly I wasn't disappointed with Faith Domergue. Either along side the monster, far from the monster or even as the monster, she was just fun to watch. As for the lamia itself, I used mythological references and my own imagination to fill in the gaps... hell, they're just mermaids minus the shell bikini anyway so it's not that hard.
I once read a book with a hat with a hidden room where there was just enough room for a black widdow. Sadly it was never used, but a really cool idea.
The writer probably saw CAT PEOPLE and thought he could do better.
+Glen Talbot Guess what , he was wrong.
Thats what I was thinking....
The show I saw this on as a kid made it sound like Jack Kelly and David Jansen were the leads. I don't remember being bored (I was a big Universal International fan as a kid), but even then, I recognized the plot as a reworking of the Mummy series.
The snake only had one eye since we only get one image (POV) of each of the perspective victims... Each of the intended victims had fairly successful tv shows : David Janssen THE FUGITIVE; Marshall Thompson DAKTARI; Jack Kelly MAVERICK; Richard Long THE BIG VALLEY-not to mention the fanatical high priest Edward Platt the chief on GET SMART...
When you look through your two eyes, doesn't the image merge into one? How did you come to the conclusion that the cobra had one eye?
One eyed snake?
Fun fact: the cobra woman was also Ruth in "This Island Earth"...
+Giancarlo Nurko Another fun fact , she had a great ass : )
Funner fact: Richard Long and Marshall Thompson were brothers-in-law.
no kidding, Ruth, gee arnt we clever!
Gotta keep up with the Richard Long flicks, dude. Original House on Haunted Hill!
Orson Welles' The Stranger or even the TV movie, Death Cruise.
Using animals to kill people? I think the movie was called The Bat, where Bela Lugosi used trained bats to attack people.
This is one of my favorite creature feature movies I grow up watching on Saturday evening after cartoons.
I would have an elephant to trample my enemies to death. We would claim it was an accident, that it just walked on them while they were lying on the sidewalk.
A few I'd love to see would be The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini from 1966 and The Alligator People from 1959, please!
+FunAndObscureDVD We have looked at the Alligator people and we may do it in the future, but it is very similar to reviews we have done already. Now The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini - click bait of that title alone makes it well worth looking into. And it has Karloff in it!
The Alligator People was a let-down for me. I'd heard about how strong alligator hide was and it turns out to be just some bad rubbery material!

Good old Edward Platt
Chief of Get Smart !
Who was also the High Priest in
Atlantis The Lost Continent (1961)
Oddly enough, I adore this movie. I first saw it when I bought Universal's "Classic Sci-Fi Collection - Volume 2." I find the characters so likable. I enjoy their personalities, interactions and overlapping dialog. So even the scenes in between the murders are easy to watch and even fun. It's one of those "warm blanket" movies I like to watch to relax.
Sure, the snake itself leaves something to be desired... But if I start complaining about lackluster effects, I'd have to exclude more than half the sci-fi, monster and horror movies of the 1950s. And I don't want to do that.
One of the best in its genre !
1:06 ->
Good old Edward Platt, Chief of Get Smart !
your quips are killing me. 😂
seems like a silly movie but i should check it out i got this in a dvd pack a few years ago, and the kind of animal i would use would probably be a rabid grizzly bear
1:07 hey! It’s the Chief from *Get Smart!*
Your editing is so good. That whole snake thing struck me as a bit homoerotic, then at the end it seems like you do too. Lol!
good one hah.
I spotted Faith Domergue from This Island Earth - Might give this a watch now
2:22 I will be eternally grateful if someone actually does this story. "The Further Adventures of the Speckled Band: Sex and the City"
Faith was an awesome actress,
yes gorgeous too!
This is one film, if done right, could benefit from a modern re-make.
I think this one of your best
I wouldn't trade a good copy of this movie for the whole hyperrated
cult-stinker Star Wars box.
Can you do Sherlock Holmes and the Last Vampire? It was part of the 1984 Sherlock Holmes TV series staring Jeremy Brett. While other episodes of the series were good, this full length movie almost wholly departed from the plot of the book it was based upon and two thirds of the time I was watching it, I had no idea what was going on. I felt like I had just wasted two hours of my life after it was over and thought that I would recommend it to you to review for your channel.
+Daniel Charland We are considering doing some TV stuff and that might be a candidate. I adore Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes and that series had made a point of sticking closely to the books, then they just threw it all out for that one. Massive disappointment.
You missed the wonderful bit where the pressure cooker in the kitchen is completely ignored because (among other things) the dry cleaning arrives and is left to blow up the kitchen.
I hate to tell the cops, but all snakes have brains last time I checked.
Actually, this is one of my favorites, even though Faith Domergue can't act.
She's a beautifull actress, you just haven't seen otherwise many people are attracted to movies she's in just to see her.
It's a time honored tradition in the south to get your enemy's drunk or catch them drunk and feed them to the hog's while passed out , so i hear .......
If I wanted an animal to kill someone, I would invite that someone to a picnic and sunbathe in the woods. Once we are there, start sunbathing, wait for them to fall asleep, cover them in biscuit crumbs and let the squirrels do all the work.
Normally I would say them being Air Force explains a lot, but this movie was probably set before September 18, 1947, so still Army.
Faith Domergue? Did Howard Hughes have anything to do with this movie?
Great C list cast.
Quite the cast. I didn't mind it.
Another movie I saw long time ago. I can't remember if I liked the movie or not. I must have liked it since I don't seem to have a strong allergic reaction to the review.
children of the corn
I would use locust, I would cover the bodies with mashed Brussels sprouts while they sleep.
+Duane C Dr. Phibes beat you to it.
I know, that's why I mentioned it. Excellent movie
I agree.
+Duane C Don't Dr. Phibes Raises Again and Theatre Of Blood. Prince was on a winning streak with those movies.
Here is what puzzles me. There are only three venomous snakes. Copperheads are nasty but not deadly. Timber rattlers and pygmy rattlers can be deadly, but are very rare in NY and essentially non-existent in NYC. Practical upshot: three snakebite deaths in NYC would have been all over the news. Three deaths from a snake only found in Asia? National news.
its only a script why so serious?
I think the reviewer here is trying to make himself the star of the show rather than giving a fair and accurate review. Actually Cult Of The Cobra is a pretty good and unusual B-movie and one that I have always liked. The exotic Indian scenes, the very attractive Faith Domergue, the other high-powered actors, and a pretty good storyline to boot. So what if it has flaws? Most things do. But remember the cardinal rule of Hollywood; "THE ILLUSION IS EVERYTHING" as Irwin Allen used to say. It's not about realism or historical accuracy or social justice----it's about ENTERTAINMENT.......because that's what people want and that's what makes money ( says Hollywood).
Universal 's days had long since passed with this one. Most likely the script had been siting on the shelf for years. Universal , like the other major studios in the 50's was struggling against film makers like American International who dominated the movie market in the 1950's. They already had success with films like Creature From The Black Lagoon, It Came From Outer Space , Cult looked like a throw back to something they would have done in the early 40's. America didn't have military bases in India , that was the British ( Hammer did a better job with this idea, The Reptile). No , it was a bad idea, and it looks like they just re-used all the sets , costumes and extras from A&C Meet The Mummy. But even the greats make a stinker now and again; the world forgave Spielberg for 1941.
American troops were stationed in India during WWII, but the nyc material seems to happen 10 years later in the 1950s.
Worst. Naga. Ever. Yeah, still very odd to have a naga/Hindu Snake person as a monster in a western movie. But yeah, not a good representation at all.
_Cult of the Cobra_ is like one of Private Frazer's stories from _Dad's Army_ ruclips.net/video/WF08XACmCSc/видео.html Except not as good.
"One by one you will die!" Yeah, that's the way it normally happens.
Ah, Richard Long and his perfectly coiffed hair. And the mysterious woman sent by an Indian priest is named Lisa Moya?!? Couldn't they have gone with a name even slightly more exotic sounding?
One of your funniest reviews in a while (and, no, that's not a dig at your other reviews). Great job, guys!
+Michael Denney I completely agree, it's one of the funniest we've done in a while, but I can't take much credit, the movie did all the work! There was so much dialogue we could use.
I thought he is lacking certainly not a real critic, of course i dont generally follow them.
