SMCI Up [+500%] in One Year. Why?

  • Some investors are touting SMCI stock as the next NVIDIA, while others are classifying it in the same category as AI chip stocks. That's entirely wrong. Super Micro Computer or SMCI is a hardware retailer with a shady past that most investors probably don't know about. We cracked open the SMCI 10-K to learn more about this company that's seen some rather stellar revenues growth on the back of demand for NVIDIA GPUs. Unfortunately, that demand may dissipate once the supply problem is rectified and this 30-year old company will go back to doing what they've always been doing - but hopefully none of those widespread irregular accounting practices the SEC fined them for. That's a showstopper for us, not that we would have invested in $SMCI stock anyway. If you want a pick-and-shovel play on AI and the growth of big data, there are much more appealing AI stocks out there to choose from.

    Thank you for putting this out there. I have a small position in SMCI that has increased quite a bit. I’ve been on the fence about trimming and /or selling out. Information like this is very helpful. Even before this video, I had a bad gut feeling for some reason. Keep up the great work!

We did a piece that touched on this a little bit (link: www.nanalyze.com/2023/05/investing-ai-semiconductor-stocks/). And we're diving a bit more into semiconductors with an upcoming piece on EV chips. Stay tuned!

      Great question. Ticker confusion is a regular occurrence for retail investors which just goes to show how important it is to know what exactly we're investing in when we plug in a ticker.

      We would never consider this. We invest, we don't gamble. If we're going to invest in a company, we're going to invest with conviction. We never use stop losses. As far as SMCI goes, we're avoiding it.

    • @stefpix
      @stefpix 3 месяца назад

      @@Nanalyze yes, conviction is important. But for someone who already owns shares, and changed their mind, a stop loss may be useful. SMCI stock went up a lot. Since it is hyped it could go up more significantly or tank. I would not put a stop loss for a company stock I believe there is upside long term. Your replies could be more articulate and helpful in general. It would engage your audience and give you more subscribers. I understand you talk about the company, but in the end most who buy shares want to have a profit down the road.

    • @Nanalyze
      @Nanalyze  3 месяца назад +1

      @@stefpix If we buy a stock we do so with a horizon of a decade or more. We don't go jumping in and out of the market. We use dollar cost averaging to buy shares, and the reverse of that to exit a position when we decide to do so. We also have rules about trimming overweights. You said, "I would not put a stop loss for a company stock I believe there is upside long term." Exactly. We only hold companies we believe have long term upside. We don't jump in and out of the market trying to make a quick buck.
      Regarding your comment about "being more articulate and helpful," you must be new here. ;) Give a read through the comments and you'll see just how many people find our content helpful. We achieved our massive stack of great testimonials and reputation because we're engaging with readers and - especially - our thousands of paying subscribers. No worries there, but thank you for the advice. Your point on using stop losses in appropriate situations is noted, it's just not for us.

    • @stefpix
      @stefpix 3 месяца назад

      @@Nanalyze Yes, I am new there. But I went through the top comments, and some of your replies about the stock price were "watch the video". I understand that you do a lot of research and process a lot of information, but some are looking for a simpler advice.
      I just watched a video from a year ago about top semi companies, and it was mentioned about trimming NVDA and considering Synopsis SNPS. Those are interesting points. But trimming NVDA a year ago for SNPS would mean as of Friday Feb 9 2024 to have missed a 224% gain of NVDA stock vs 59% of SNPS, which is significant. My takeaway is that I will do a stop loss for the few SMCI shares I bought some days ago for about $505 and now are at $747. I appreciate you shedding light on the company. Some insider bought shares recently, but there were earlier sells. Probably it is safer for me to stick to a few companies and buy some leveraged ETFs, like SOXL, FNGU and BULZ, which are doing well for me.
      I am curious if you have ever made a video or mentioned in any video NVEC.
      Anyway I appreciate videos that offer such insight and perspectives. No one has a working crystal ball to predict everything in the future, anyway. But learning helps taking a good direction.

      From the 10-K. "We compete primarily with large vendors of x86-based general purpose servers and components." Principal competitors include "global technology vendors, such as Cisco, Dell, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, and Lenovo, ODMs, such as Foxconn, Quanta Computer, and Wiwynn Corporation, and OEMs, such as Inspur." Sounds like the company thinks they have some competition.

    • @Nanalyze
      @Nanalyze  3 месяца назад +1

      And this from the horse's mouth: "Barriers to entry in our market are relatively low and we expect increased challenges from existing as well as new competitors. Some of our principal competitors offer server solutions at a lower price, which has resulted in pricing pressures on sales of our server solutions." Those pricing pressures are why you see gross margins slide.

      Probably a bit apples to oranges to be honest. We find it's probably best to choose from a) a diversified portfolio of dividend growth stocks or b) a dividend growth ETF.
