  • It's easy to buy into the "Marcus Morris is like Kawhi Leonard 0.5 and is single-handedly dragging the Clippers to victories" narrative if you're not avidly checking the box-scores for the games and committing all the statlines to your internal long-term storage (i.e. your brain). Morris has had a handful of impressive scoring performances during the 'offs, hitting the twenty-point mark in four games, all of them wins for the Clippers.
But Morris has been inconsistent, and that's where the comparison with Kawhi dies. Just in this series, Morris has had shooting performances of 3-of-11, 3-of-11 (again), 2-of-4, and 2-of-8. This game was his first good game of the series. I would say that Morris can't be expected to step up every single game, but the thing is, he totally can be expected to step up every single game. When he was on the Knicks averaging 20 PPG per game, he was expected to step up every single game, and he mostly met those expectations. Certainly, he didn't have as many dud shooting nights as he is having now. Perhaps his soul-consuming hatred for New York-style pizza gave him the energy to dominate on the court. I know that when I'm thinking about how New York-style pizza is the grossest garbage ever, I am approximately 10% more accurate on jumpshots. And if somebody has a slice of that floppy triangular non-pizza in my vicinity, I suddenly gain the ability to dunk.
Morris is fond of taking tough shots, and that could be part of the reason that he hasn't been as successful in the playoffs as Clippers fans may have hoped. Morris can hit those shots, and I'm happy to see him hearkening back to the great midrange operators of the NBA's past, but a guy who counts on posting up and shooting fadeaways as a major component of his arsenal is never going to be as efficient as a guy who takes catch-and-shoot jumpers.
I don't have the answers here. If anybody, Tyronn Lue should have the answers. The answer might be "just let Morris keep doing what he does because sometimes it wins us games". I would ask Steve Ballmer what he thinks the answer is but that guy is uncomfortably sweaty all the time and is prone to fits of mania (DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS) so I don't like being near him.
