Near, the developer of bsnes, recently took their own life after enduring years of cyberbullying. As ugly and hate filled as the internet can be at times, there's nothing anyone can do to diminish Near's achievements or their immense contributions to video game emulation. Near not only developed bsnes+Higan but also helped to advance other emulators, like Snes9x, and invented the bps patching format used by some of the mods in this video. I recommend reading this piece (penned by Near) to better appreciate the extent of their talent and commitment: arstechnica.com/gaming/2021/06/how-snes-emulators-got-a-few-pixels-from-complete-perfection/

polygon warp is a big part of the playstation’s identity, that’s why you’ve got thousands of indie devs currently trying to recreate it
I think it's beautiful.
It always looked like ass to me in how it rendered graphics, so the stabilization and elimination of warping now makes them look REALLY good. It's utterly incredible - especially because it ACTUALLY MAKES ME WANT TO PLAY ITS GAMES MORE. That's a massive feat - to attract without detracting nor changing things.

I love projects like this, because they don't change the game, but only take away the distracting outdated parts of it, so you can enjoy the great parts without being reminded that you're playing a emulator.
And then you get fantastic projects that DO change the game, because sometimes the game you love isn't what it could have been. Modding is sick.

Counter point, Emulators good.
Emulation is BEST for any consumer with half a brain.
is a shame that what Nintendo does to archive their classic games is by making it complicated for their dedicated fans, thinking emulation is piracy when all it does is improve the experiences people had many years ago but all they care is the money they can't get out of it which is an awful ideology
Fans don't make money off videogame preservation, Nintendo does. That's a big difference. But a group of programmers would never sell emulators or ROM patches...right?
They're taking advantage of copyright law
@@mortenera4423 emulators aren't illegal tho, so it's not wrong for them to profit,it's original software, not the one actually contained in the original console's architecture. And the fact that some people pay to make emulation better shows that it's not done for the sake of getting things for free.
Nintendo's single-handedly done so much damage to the public image of emulators that they can't even call their OWN emulators what they really are. Up until the day they finally took the whole thing down, that infamous legal page never added an "Okay if we emulate our own shit because it's our own shit" exception to emulation even though it'd be perfectly understandable to do so.
The problem is that emulation IS piracy.
Nerrels crusade for emulators is a noble one.

@@JetpackGamer456 yeah Nintendo is pretty mommy dommy.
You will if you start playing Mario World hacks.
All this makes me wish Nintendo would just step up with their emulation. I'm playing Metroid Fusion on the Wii U right now, and GBA games, while done well gameplay-wise on the system, are really lacking in visual options. There's something satisfying about playing these games on Nintendo's own hardware, so it's a true shame that the company's negligence has led to their hardware no longer being the best way to experience their games.
Honestly if I were Nintendo I'd just hire some of the more talented emulator developers and create an entire department just dedicated to getting legacy content working on Nintendo's modern hardware with as many options and features as possible. That way Nintendo can leave their legacy content to those who are passionate about working with it, and let their current development teams work on current games.
And even the Wii U is light-years ahead of the switch in terms of legacy games.
I think the Wii U emulation is perfect
Emulation on the wii u is still leaps and bounds better than the switches online service
I think they did hire a former nes dev emulator to work on the nes emu on Animal crossing, but I don't keep track pass the zelda remake/remasters.
I wish Nintendo would hire these people and they would creat emulators for the world to enjoy. But that will never happen for as long as I live. We can only dream.

Emulation is 100% legal, despite what Nintendo thinks. It’s only the distribution of roms online that are illegal.
Emulators and dumping your own Roms (in most cases) are legal. Downloading Roms online is not.
Pretty sure this was shown in another Nerrel video but imagine if Nintendo had a store on pc where you could purchase Roms to play on their emulators. That would be the smart thing to do if they don’t like emulation but Nintendo isn’t smart

Ooooh! Donkey Kong Country 2 in widescreen - that's the dream!!
Emulation devs and game modders are some of my most respected individuals, much of the time moreso than game devs nowadays. The sheer time and determination it takes to reverse engineer hard/software to perfection and beyond will never cease to amaze me, let alone that most of them do it solely out of their love for the hobby.
1:20 An accurate depiction of Nerrel? You make the call!
Honestly, the whole subject of emulation is meant to be argued as morally gray only because game companies want us to feel guilt for piracy... except, sometimes, piracy is our only option. Game preservation wasn't and will never be a priority for companies for monetary reasons, which explains why fewer and fewer games are made available for "backwards compatibility" as years go on. Although there will be those who use bullet points like "only a small percentage of users will ever use it" or "people prefer the latest and greatest", progress often requires looking back in order to look ahead, as some of the decisions we've made on what makes a video game "great" have resulted in worse experiences, both for the player and for the developer (unless you're an executive).
Well said.
Imagine how much more they could do with a profit incentive. Copyright law needs a big reform. These people deserve to make money off their hard work.

@@ZoneofDoom That was a good video! It actually helped me rethink my position. Obviously I still think copyright law needs a big reform, but the profit incentive argument will not be one that I will be using primarily moving forward. I think, before reaching that point, original consoles will stop working. So it'll be the only way to experience them, be it 100% accurate or not.
@@Gabi-enby Hopefully not
kinda pulling numbers out of my ass here but the most developed emulators are over 90% console accurate, i’d say that with a little more attention and open-sourcing we could easily get to 100% console accuracy across multiple systems within 5-10 years
@@logandunlap9156 software emulation will likely never reach 100% accuracy for a plethora of reasons, with one of the most obvious being that the average end user won't have the processing power to handle it without serious detriment to the game's performance.
