He was one of the girl’s brothers I think and he later died of HIV, Sad, B-52s rock. See ‘Athens GA Inside Out’ film for more on Athens quirky music scene in 1980s.

Ricky Wilson died in 1985 of aids. He had not told anyone of his illness, not even his younger sister Cindy, one of the singers in the band, who did not have a chance to say goodbye to him. Bouncing off the Satellites (released in 1986) is the last album which featured Ricky. The band took a hiatus from recording until 1989. The drummer switched to guitar and learned all of Ricky's parts of the older songs. The original line-up remained unchanged to this day, apart from added musicians. Cindy only took a hiatus from the recording of Good Stuff (1992) and the Flintstone movie soundtrack to take care of her family, although she did soon after join the band again for touring.

Cosmic Thing propelled them into popularity, but I was listening to them when people thought I was a weirdo for it and wearing two different color custom made vans (shoes) on different feet. And wearing Vuarnet wraparound sunglasses with leather side covers with neck string. 1979, skateboarding and riding BMX bikes in empty swimming pools, making snowboards and sneaking in the backside of a ski resort (Illegal at the time) and getting in 2-3 runs in cause you had to hike to the top.. Made scurfboards out of old surfboards, shorten them and glassed a skag in it ,and then being towed by a truck down a ditch with a one handle ski rope. Also made BMX Cruiser bikes before you could buy them from bike shop..then started racing Dirtbikes... I wasn't a weirdo, I was jus ahead of my time...like the B 52'S... We both were RADICAL!! The Fresno Rads!.. My teenage gang...

Great vintage photo. Loved their first couple of albums when they were still a garage band. Didn't care for their later over produced crap, like Legal Tender with those lame assed synthetic hand claps.

It's hard for me to think about the B-52s without remembering the Athens scene that they kick-started. In particular, I think of R.E.M., one of my favorite bands back in the 80s. And it's hard not to notice that the B-52s' music has, for the most part, held up better over time.

Wow, never heard this version before. The vocals sit better in the mix with this one. I love the album version, but to my ear, the vocal tracks always sounded somewhat disconnected from the song. I Also like the different guitar treatment in this one. Has a very T. Moore / L. Ranaldo feel, which is probably not entirely coincidental.

This is what happens musically when talent and creativity meld perfectly.....
The B-52s are an iconic one of kind band who came about organically from the sleepy college town of Athens, GA.....

Both were hugely influential in their respective scenes. The Ramones created the blueprint for punk in the mid 70s and a have a core of classics. The B-52 took longer to develop but were more musically diverse and had more staying power. I like and listen to both.

The guitar riff is awfully similar to English punk band the Cortinas with their song ''defiant pose''.. The Cortinas version came out a year earlier too.

      Pretty close! (ruclips.net/video/IKLLemtCTa8/видео.html)
I doubt the B-52s ever heard the Cortinas song. It wasn't exactly a top-ten radio hit.
Some talented person should create a mashup of the two songs. This is the highest form of expression today:

@@iliketowatch. I'm English, and I'd never heard of the Cortinas song either, until I happened upon it on RUclips.... Every now and again certain rifs repeat themselves, such as '''Come as you are''' by Nivarna is essentially '''Eighties'' by Killing Joke....
