As always, it has mutilple meanings, but according to Tyler the original intent was to convince his brother Jay to move forward with making his own music. You better not be home, you better be in the studio. Shed your skin, change and grow. You manifest a ceiling for yourself when you shy away from your passions.
Imagine looking up to your brother and all the successes he's found. Then you confess your struggles and insecurities about finding your own path, only for him to go and write a number one hit about his advice to you.
Yay! Scaled and Icy time! This whole era is so fun and colorful, and it's totally different from anything else they've done, so you're in for a treat!
They at least started writing this album in 2020, during lockdown I believe, hence why they have such long hair. Can you believe they still pulled off this level of creativity during all that?!
There are a lot of comments here with a rude undertone. Educate them without sounding condescending and unkind. They enjoy the music, they decided to go through on the lore journey, please remember it is not what you say, its how you say it. Good job guys! Cant wait for the next one!

I really should watch til the end before commenting lol last one : when I saw them in 2022 Tyler said some songs he can write in 30 minutes and some take longer. He then said the next song he was about to sing took 5 years to write. That song was The Judge .
Scaled and Icy gets a lot of hate for being more upbeat, but I liked it. Can't wait til you guys get to Clancy, it's unreal.
not sure if you'll see this but Tylers mother is not dead and his father is not an alcoholic. this song, Shy Away doesn't have much to do with the lore. except having the dragon in it. like Damian said, its about his brother.
I feel it has quite of bit of dema lore or at least Easter eggs. But Tyler DID say he wrote the song about his brother.
They're referencing My Blood where the characters mother is dead and the father became an alcoholic.
You guys NEED to watch the 'I Am Clancy' video before starting the album. It explains everything and then leads directly into the first track, Overcompensate.
I would also recommend seeing all the videos in the playlist on their channel called 'The Story' before doing so.
Welcome to the rabbit hole of Twenty One Pilots! They have so many deep BARS in their songs. Not sure if this is the list you guys have but you have to start with the earlier stuff because it all connects. Start with the album Vessels. That’s where it all starts to connect. They have an earlier album named after themselves but do those songs after. This is the order you should go in. Start with “Car radio”, then “Ode to Sleep”, “Migraine”, “Holding on to you”, “Guns for hands”, and “Trees”( live from the fox theatre). After that album you’re gonna head to “Blurryface”. From that album you should listen to “Stressed out” after that do “Lane Boy”, “Ride”, “Tear in my heart”, Fairy local”, The judge”, Message man”, “Goner” and finish with “Heavydirtysoul” Then it goes to the album “Trench”. Start with “Jumpsuit”(it’s the continuation of Heavydirtysoul) then “Nico and the Niners”, “Levitate” after that do “The Hype”(Regular version and Berlin version) then “Cholrine”, “Neon Gravestones”, followed by “Moph”, “Bandito”, “Pet Cheetah” and finish with “Leave the City”. After is the Scaled and Icy album with “Shy away”, “Saturday”, “Outside”, for the music videos. Then go in order from the album then check out the live performance which plays more into the Dema lore.
And then before the new album Clancy you need to watch the video “I am Clancy” which explains most of the lore. After that start with “ Overcompensate” then “Backslide” then “Routines in the night” followed by “Vignette” then “Navigating” and ending with “Paladin Striat”

57 versions of 1 of the tracks on Clancy. ( can’t remember which one).✌🏻

I’m not sure if you’ve heard it yet or not, but the lyric video to Redecorate is Tyler’s handwriting and gives us a bit of a peek into how he writes songs since we get cross outs and corrections in the video - just thought to recommend that one when you were talking about how he might write song lyrics. 😊

this song is about Tyler encouraging his younger brother Jay to pursue his dreams in music as well - Jay wanted Tyler to show him how to put a track together so Tyler did this song and ended up being the first single off Scaled and Icy
the whole Scaled and Icy album is a more upbeat sound
the idea behind this album is Clancy is trapped in Dema and has given in to the bishops (at the end of Levitate he's dragged back in and now is stuck) - they have him under control and are making him make happier sounding music to brainwash the other people in Dema to think everything is happy there
also, always write out "twenty one pilots" in the titles because fans will not search "21 pilots"
Have a look at the studio session videos they did, you can get a bit of their process through those, plus those are very interesting versions of the tracks. I'm personally a huge fan of the Berlin version of the Hype
Since you guys had previously mentioned that you would love to see Tyler at work in the booth/studio, then I recommend watching the linked video. Here Tyler breaks and reconstructs some of his more popular songs. It’s incredibly interesting and it gives an insight to Tyler’s creativity. If you haven’t already, you may need to listen to Ride, Chlorine, Smithereens, and My Blood to get the full experience, but it’s not necessary. Cheers!

Every song on the Scaled & Icy album sounds like it's from a different decade.
Good Day sounds very 60's morning show, Saturday has a 70s vibe, Choker is a bit 80's and 90's... etc
Hmm I always saw this as she’d you skin to make the change you need to make…. If you’re talking snakes… they shed their skin to grow, so that’s how I take it. That’s what this song is about…. Not shying away from taking the chance to grow, don’t doubt yourself & put a ceiling in your ambition, aim for the heights and break through it. Better not be here …. Don’t be in the same place move forward. Was written for his brother to inspire him to take the step to release the music he was making… & he did just that.

Don't gatekeep what's lore and what isn't. The opening scene where Tyler is looking off camera and it has neon lights above him, I think it's safe to say the general theory here is that they are in Dema and are being controlled and forced into making the video as propaganda. You also see Trash the dragon flying overhead. The video for this song can absolutely be considered part of the lore even if not "core" lore.
