- The Coolest Scale You Don't Know - The Arabian/Flamenco Scale - Ukulele Tutorial
New Ukulele tutorials every Wednesday (technique and theory) and Saturday (songs)
For today's lesson we are going to break down the coolest scale that you have never played... the Phrygian Dominant! I know, the name is terrifying, you can also think about it as the Arabian scale, the Flamenco Scale, the Gypsy Jazz scale and for all my theory nerds, the 5th mode of the harmonic minor scale. The scale has a very unique sound and the second you hear it you will have feelings of the Arabia, the desert, Aladdian times, but you will also hear it in Flamenco and Rumba music, both have a massive influence from northern Africa as well as Turkish and Balkan ideas, even influence in areas like Yugoslavia and the Slavic nations. In this lesson I will show you how to play it, show the intervals that are used so you can play it in any key, the chords associated with it, the most common chord progression used, how to improvise with it and even how to practice with it, so buckle up, it is time to travel across the world!

I love that scale! I can especially hear the Arabian sound in it! Arabian night, Aladin and all that stuff!
Great video. Definitely up for some more flamenco. Muchas gracias.

Sounds good

Freakinit dominant
Ha
Frank! Long time, good to see you are still playing my man. This was a lot of fun.
It's called Hijaz maqam and it's used in religious music.
Many variations exist,
Try rasing the 7th then it becomes 2 hijaz tetra chords
Or try playing a harmonic minor with raised 4th,or raised 4th with lowered 2nd
Interesting seeing this scale on the ukulele
Cool video bro 🎉
Thanks for the cool facts! What language is “hijaz maqam” ? What is the context for the other two scales? Where can I learn more? Thank you!! 🙏🏼
@@TenThumbsProductions
Hijaz is the name of the family
Maqam is synonym for modes i guess
Which is wider than scales and interchangeable
In western music there's harmonic minor or melodic SCALE
While in eastern music (arabic in my case) we have nahawand MAQAM which encapsulates 10s of minors
Absolutely loved this! Jim Pankey, 🪕banjo god, did a banjo Hava Na Gila and that got me picking a slightly more ‘Arabian’ version of this scale on the Banjolele. Thanks for including some chords to add a bit more voice to it. Looks like we all want some more flamenco content 😎👏👏👏👍
Tyler, thanks for the interesting video! 👏 This scale is also used in Greek music such as Rembetiko, where it is called Hitzás or Arabic "minor". A variety of different scales (Drómos) are used there, mostly from the Arabic region. So the musical roots are similar to those of flamenco. I have a small Greek baglamas. I can't play it properly but have tried to improvise on it in Greek scales
Love it!
Yes please more flamenco
Very, very cool! Thankyou Scale Master Tyler. So nice!
Absolutely love this, even though it was bit confusing
Yes we love flamenco
Loved this and would love more! Thank you for the excellent tutorial!

These type of lessons!! Don’t give me wrong learning a song is great, but this type of lesson gives us the tools to make our own!! *chefs kiss* thank you! Is there more like this?
Every Wednesday is a different technique!
Ooh do I get Brownie points . I know the phrygian scale and how "flamenco/arabic" it sounds.
Great lesson about it.
Absolutely! Here are 10 brownie points!
Hehe, this is making me want to learn Misirlou on my Uke. ❤
I’ve been thinking about doing that one…
that song would also be a great excuse to dust off my trumpet from Highschool band and start rebuilding my chops.
Love this kind of music. I have watched many of your videos over the past 2 years, and recently became a member of your Patreon lessons.
Thanks Tyler, lovely tutorial. From Jan - your new best friend from GNUF😊

That’s great to hear! Happy you liked it.
Very nice. I'm practising this scale. I use the 5th fret 2nd string for A tho
Correct, like the refrigerator . . .Phrygian = Fridgian :) love this scale!!!
Estupendo. Más de esto, por favor. 🎼🎼🎼
Gracias Mike!
Well Tyler that was a cool sound I didn't know and I haven't heard it before. something else for me to practice along with the two I put on instagram yesterday.
I like it
Now I can be a real gypsy 😎
Always down for scales
Más por favor 🎼🎼🎼
Hello Tyler ! I try to understand why A is the 4th of the E Phrygian Dominant scale (and not A#) ? Does this means than in terms of intervals, the Phrygian Dominan scale is H / WH / H / W / H / W / W ? Thanks to light me on this... And Yes, I like "exoctic" style of music, makes my head travelling (I start working on Hawaïan music style) ...
Is the Doric mode used a lot on the uke?
To clarify I believe you are talking about the Dorian mode? Modal composition isn’t very common on ukulele, but Dorian along with Mixolydian, are probably the two most common
Brilliant!
