  • The Belgian Malinois is smart, energetic and extremely loyal. They need constant interaction with their owner. My service dog Vinny was named after a Multi-purpose K9 killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq in 2007. He has become a huge part of my life.

My girl is so similar. My go anywhere and do anything besty. Chill, but can also hump out 30 trail miles in a day. Best dogs ever if you can handle the working responsibility.

You're right, Kevin, the new rule is always the one you allow next for these K9s. If you aren't training them, they're training you.

I got my service dog from Labs Liberty back in June 2019.
He has been a true miracle!
That's a fantastic organization! Great folks!
I'm glad you have Vinnie. 🎉

Great video. I recognise so many of the things you describe also with my own malinois. Same her, his nose is the best I've ever experienced with dogs. Only difference to what you say: Our dog is somehow equally attached to me or to my wife. And regarding staying alone, we trained him to be able to stay at home for up to about 4-5 hours (with our 2 cats) without destroying anything. Basically he sleeps near the house door and waits. Best dog I ever had.

They can have different levels of drive. Vinny seems on the really relaxed side of the spectrum (for the breed). My old Mal had hyper drive and no off button. Very sensitive dogs. I'm glad you have Vinny, good match!

Great video Kevin needed that this morning. Vinny is a great dog but obviously, just like you explained in the video takes commitment. You guys have a great bond.

A big backyard isn't enough, these dogs need mental stimulation and engagement for more then they need anything else. 100% they are not for everyone. During GWOT and the SOF dogs got noticed everyone got them and never seen so many in pounds then ever before and continues to this day. Even SOF handlers getting puppies couldn't deal with them andnhad to get rid of them. Getting an already trained dog is far different then getting and raising a puppy. They will test your last nerve and go far beyond that. They need engagement and bodning with a handler. They are herders/working dogs and need that to fully fulfill themselves. Left unattended in a yard they may jump the fence or tear up your yard like you never seen. Even washout from programs aren't your average pets.

PSA: please don’t go out and buy one. They are very challenging creatures and everyone thinks they can do it and they end up in places like SoCal BMR. Don’t do it unless you have a need for it, period. It’s not a fashion accessory or a piece of larp kit.

Close enough neighbor of mine in The West of Ireland had one of these back in the early 80's. They owned a bar and he was in the back yard all the time. No one knew what breed he was... reality is everyone thought he was an Alsatian (German Shepard) of course I know now he wasnt. I got interested in these dogs a few years back but would never own one because I cant take care of a dog like that.
I was only telling my daughter about that dog yesterday.......I still think of him
Always seemed vicious but of course he never had proper care / exercise. He was very well taken care of otherwise though.Used to walk around the bar on ''dole day''🤣.........Jesus Ireland in the 80's🙄🙄

Random one… is it common for SOF dogs to damage/lose their hearing as a result of operations/training or being on ranges during weapons fire ect.? Do you worry about this for Vinny?
