Marc Bolan was my way into Popular Music without a doubt it started a life long love of Rock. As a 12yr old I would pre order the singles and get down to my local record store on release day to pick the latest Bolan wonder up. Of course in retrospect the lyrics were often nonsense but the music was exciting and although his star only burned bright for a short time Marc Bolan was a bright light in those early 1970s.❤
Actually pretty good guitar player but only showed 'flashes' of it. I can do without some of the vocal theatrics when he goes too 'goat boy' but there are TONS of great tracks too. Hugely influential on future rockers
Electric Warrior is my go to T Rex album. Have the vinyl and deluxe cd. Evokes so many memories of that era. Have another ‘best of’ cd so probably won’t buy Bolan Boogie but I’m glad it’s out there.
Marc was an influence from day one. Used to collect the singles from hearing 20th Century Boy but I did see the band on Top Of The Pops doing Ride A White Swan but I was hooked from the opening of 20th Century Boy. Played in a tribute band (TooRex) for a bit in 2003. Still have a big grin on my face whenever T.Rex come on the radio.
Hi Phil, Thanks for reviewing my favourite artist, Marc Bolan. The recently released ‘Bolan Boogie’ is a very different album to the original ‘Bolan Boogie’ which came out in the early 70’s. I might be wrong but I’m pretty sure that the original album was released as a sort of ‘cash in’ album by Fly Records. At the time, Marc had recently found success just as his contract was up with Fly and he quit in order to set up his own label and I believe he even attempted to prevent it being released at the time? It comprised of both Tyrannosaurus Rex and T.Rex songs. However it became a sort of classic album in its own right even though it was basically a compilation release. At first I wasn’t sure about the 7” size of these new CD releases but having purchased a couple I think they look terrific. Cheers, Jim
I used to have a couple of T. Rex albums and I really liked Bolan's awesome guitar playing, his pop sounding vocals and the odd lyrics in all of his songs to bad we lost him way too soon thanks again Phil.🎶🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁🎶
To me Roger, Marc Bolan looked like a true rock star, he sounded like a true rock star and he lived the life of a true rock star. He was the real deal. Most importantly, he had the songs. A very underrated songwriter, in those early 70s, Bowie saw him as his biggest rival. I echo your thoughts- went way too soon.
Wasn't the DJ Stuart Henry on radio one on a Saturday morning? I seem to remember when T.rex had a new single out, I'd hear it there first. He'd announce it at the beginning of the show then you had to wait and wait until it came on. Great memories
Great! Anyone without a T.Rex collection should definitely get this. I already have a 3xCD 54 track set (got it in a Chaaradee ‘dive’), called ‘Solid Gold: The Definitive Collection’, which actually sounds pretty fantastic, so I’m already sorted. But anyone who isn’t should get this one. 🤘😎🤘
Electric warrior was the first album I bought with my own money when it came out in such exciting times as you say . Whilst I own all the tracks multiple times the physical packaging is tempting me as a completist!
Can't go wrong with the mighty classics, very nice packaging. Love that picture of Marc with the Flying V, one of my favorites, also like that other one from the same photo session where he is about to lick the fretboard. Very cool that they included There Was A Time / Raw Ramp / Electric Boogie on this edition, stunning B-side!
Marc and T.Rex were my first band! I still have all their vinyl. Phil, your description of growing up in the seventies was bang on, mate. Thank you for this and the walk down memory lane. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
I'm from Germany & was in my early teens when T Rex was big - a major band in Germany at the time as I recall. They & The Beatles are actually two of the first bands I can distinctly remember hearing on the radio & knowing who they were
I was far from around for it, but that Metal Guru TotP is very powerful, it crosses generationally in a way that even that Beatles' Ed Sullivan doesn't quite, watching the T. Rex footage, you 'get' it, the appeal, the resonance, like an act of visceral time travel... Do you care for the new-wave/new-rom band Japan? Speaking of old TV performances that pass the test the time, the Ghosts of My Life TotP is incredibly impactful and existentially charged. Works even if one were not familiar with the music prior. Thanks for uploading, always!
By gum Phil, that took me back to what was a superb time in music. Well presented and loved the passion you clearly have for this group. Take care. Dave✅✅
Remember this era so well Phil. I too have the album "Bolan Boogie" on vinyl, as well as "Electric Warrior" and "Slider". But the original from '71, was more of a compilation of T. Rex and Tyrannosaurus Rex songs. Which in all essence I much preferred, as this is just another "Greatest Hits" or "Best Of" in my book. The original had identity, and character, and was popular album with the fans back in the day.Even although it borrowed heavily from "EW".There are and have been plenty of compilations down the years, so to call this release "Bolan Boogie" seems a little wrong in my book.As there are so much of the original track list missing on this new release. But -hey! What the hell. What was Marc's saying, and I paraphrase "Always try to keep a little bit of Marc in your heart?" Indeed. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Ooh the pain when I got Free Story back from a so-called friend at school, and discovered it had beer spilt on it and it was scratched. The pain...(I might have cried) I learnt a lesson, and never leant another vinyl album out again!
Nice review Phil. After seeing your review of a little while back concerning the expanded packaging of some cd's, I was intrigued by this idea. A fortnight ago, in my local HMV, there was this and also the T.Rex album 'Tanx', which I've always found hard to come by, in this new expanded edition with the deluxe packaging. I picked up 'Tanx', like this a two cd edition with a companion disc of outtakes, works in progress and single B sides for £24.99. At around £12.50 per disc this was well worth it. I think that this sort of packaging could really catch on. Good luck and have a great Christmas.
Hey Phil, I was more a Slade & Sweet guy than T. Rex but I liked their music. I've managed to acquire a couple of really broad Bolan CD comps but this looks like a thing of beauty. Still own my original 45's. When I went to LP I graduated to Purple, Quo, Led Zep & Heep etc. cheers mate.👍
Nice Phil always informative who doesn’t like a little T.REX or 70’s glam. Keep up the great work. I’m the biggest T. REX fan and Now Spinning fan . Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Its a strange thing but I have always been very much an album guy. However, I first started getting into rock music by listening to singles. No doubt down to cost of albums which pocket money didn't really stretch to.
Looks like a great set and I dig the packaging but 2015’s compilation set ‘For All The Cats’ has a more comprehensive collection featuring 49 tracks so you get more value for money, although this new set does look very appealing and may attract a younger audience.
There are SO MANY T Rex comps/anthologies...Some good ones that may be harder to find: Radio Sessions And Broadcasts 1967 -1977 Unchained. Home Recordings & Studio Outtakes 1972-1977 (quality hugely varies) Anthology (The Early Years) (ditto) Whatever Happened To The Teenage Dream? (Zinc + Tanx, plus demos/rarities/outtakes)
Hi Phil - OK, where do I start. To be honest T Rex never did anything for me. OK - yes they had quite a few catchy songs and hits, but I just didnt like them. Here I was late 60's listening to Blues, Blues Rock, Prog Rock and Folk - then along came T Rex !! You have to be joking - right lololol. I saw them as light weight popsters, still do lol. Bolan wanted to be star and yes he had a degree of success, but the one thing that I was really disappointed about was when he dropped John Peel like a hot potato because John didnt like his latest single. John and Marc were great friends and John had promoted Marc and T Rex, even going on tour with them. Bolan just couldnt handle the negative criticism of the single, and they never spoke again. After what John had done for both Tyrannosaurus Rex, and T Rex to be treated like that - and to one of my favourite people in the world, was unforgiveable. I think John knew at the end of the day that Bolan would move on - but not in that way - that really hurt John, but thats the industry eh? Nice review Phil - I quite like the format, but I wont be buying it !! Wouldnt do if we were all the same eh? lol. Take care. Cya Doug
So does it stand up for you as music or is it just nostalgia? I'm about your age and loved Slade, T Rex. Sweet and so on but I feel that's now consigned to the same cupboard as The Wheels On The Bus. Not saying it should be, it's just how a feel about that music. Oddly I still like Mott The Hoople and early Status Quo.
Okay... 1. I think it Is a female thing, coz every woman I've ever known, her record collection And CD collection were thrashed 2. I Hate this format. Recently got the Sparks thing on CD and it's the same way...where the hell is that guna fit? And it was at least $12 more than just a regular sized set ...now, to try to make more money on old titles, they're gonna try to re-release everything in this format, just to squeeze out our remaining pennies ! Also, why is the sound so poor on every Edsel release? This has been going on for years with Edsel, Sparks sounds like crap...at least in my speakers, but I remember the Gillan collection being especially egregious. Sorry for bitchin'. Love Bolan but I have so many Best of's for T.Rex ( T-Rextasy was best)
I agree, they have used the name to signify the classic compilation but this is aimed at new fans discovering the music of T-Rex and keep Marc’s name out there. I only have the old version on CD and my vinyl copy is trashed so this is ideal for me. Phil
Hi, I agree, you are right. There should have been some sort of design element that paid homage to the original. Perhaps even a short bit of text telling the story behind the original compilation and the status is has amongst original fans. Thank you - Phil

It was Marc bolan that got me into music,I have always loved his music, he was taken from us too soon.
Thanks for this one Phil. You never forget the first band you saw live and yes it was T. Rex in Glasgow October 29, 1971 🎸

Great memories
Stuart Henry was brilliant. He also had specially recorded sessions for his shows.
I bet this is yet another compilation that doesn’t have my favourite T-Rex song on it! The incredibly underrated ‘Buick Mackane’ 👍🏽
From The Slider - good tune. One of their best albums IMO
Great! Anyone without a T.Rex collection should definitely get this.

Think I've got that 3 CD box so many years ago, one of the best comps I've seen.

@@southsheff first LP bought for me. Chokes me up now. I was 13 . What brilliant times. Look at it not. A mess.
Me too, aged 13. Still got the poster and the insert all in tact.
Many thanks, love Marc✌️🤘
Bought the Tanx version Really excellent Great Video Phil

I would add Suzy Quattro to the 3 Bands you mentioned. That's what I grew Up with!

Yes 👍 I saw Japan for the first time supporting Blue Oyster Cult !
Perfect design! Well done Phil for getting Marc's name out there, great comp!👍
Thanks 👍

You too !
Need a remastered Best Of T.Rex
Bolan was a one-off total genius!!
Totally agree
Where's Cadalac ? ...... one of my fave songs of Marc , so melancholic
It was actually Cadilac and also misspelled.

The old version on LP and cd cured me from the Summer time blues
Tell me what a Raw Ramp is ?
This will hopefully be arriving from Santa next Wednesday!
Those who misspelled 'Santa' (again) may be in for some new Death Metal!😃

Same age and same path. Then punk happened.

Bolan Boogie was the first album I ever bought, and this isn't Bolan Boogie. 🤨
Nothing like the original
It’s a new version for a new audience.

I accept that Phil, but maybe they might have chosen a new title for it. That original track listing is ingrained in every fibre of my being.

It bears no resemblance whatsoever to the original Bolan Boogie. It's just another excuse for another compilation
T.Rex was my band. Still collect them. Slade. Sweet.John Kongas. ccs. Led Zeppelin.Beatles. Yes. Barclay James Harvest. Still collect them all today.
Thank you - all great bands
John Kongos, South Africa's very own sorta John Lennon. Made some great records, too.
