My opinion is, don't believe all the hype, don't smoke a pack a day, but the occassional one probably isn't bad for you. Although I'd recommend natural cigerrettes because they have virtually no carcinogens. As cancerous as weed. Also all of my relatives that smoked (virtually all of them) didn't die from cancer, and my mom who never smoked got colon cancer. Also her dad died of a brain tumor. Its a gene thing, if you have the polymorphism you are more likely to get that form of cancer regardless if you smoke but it can be aggravated by smoking.
the thing is that lung cancer is even rare among smokers--significantly less rare, but still rare. so 3 out of four grandparents dying of, even if they are smokers, implies 1 of 2 things: they all died quite old, when risk for all cancers shoot up, but also when dying generally shoots way up; or they have something else in common other than smoking, like maybe where they lived. but they smoked, so that's what killed them. similarly, indoor allergies are getting more prevelent even as smoking, and especially smoking indoors, has fallen off a cliff. but smoking is bad so smoking is to blame. i think this is the irrational attitude toward smoking that she's talking about in the video. smoking is a bad habit and is bad for you, like a sweet tooth or a drinking problem or an unchecked internet habit, but it's not that big of a deal really, not as big of a deal as it's treated in some circles.

While her schtick is amusing and usually harmless, this is not. And her claim that "everything" that was said about homosexuality in the 70's is now said about second hand smoke is patently false. No on ever said, in the 70's of otherwise, that homosexuality causes cancer. Reputable doctors now say smoking causes cancer and the risks of second hand smoke are not trivial. I trust them rather than Fran - whose scientific training as far as I know is nil. She has no evidence that current analysis of second hand smoke is wrong, let alone completely and fundamentally wrong. Her "feeling" that this is "just like homosexuality" and that all current analysis will be fully rejected is based on nothing other than getting a joke in here and there. But this in not funny and not amusing. I remember NYC with smoke filled bars, and I remember smoking on planes. I don't want to go back, however "boring" now might be compared with then.
@pamount oh for gods sake, im not confused about objective evidence! I meant that I'm sure doctors and scientists used to presents "evidence" that was suppoused to be "objective" about homosexuality being a deasise. You must remember that in terms of empirical science methodology there isn't actually such thing as OBJECTIVE. About second hand smoking: it might be dangerous, but Fran Lebowitz doesn't believe so and that's her opinion. About evidence being objective: look above.
@pamount She's talking about second hand smoking. also, i'm sure they had loads ofOBJECTIVE EVIDENCE against homosexuality back in days it was illegal.
I like everything about her... except thinking it's OK to blow toxic cigarette smoke in someone else's face. There is no Constitutional right to smoke wherever you want. Let's presume second hand smoke is actually GOOD FOR YOU... she still has no right to decide to blow it on others... nasty.
Fran only says that because she has no power or influence to change laws and people's attitudes about smoking and she's making her point humorous. I doubt she actually thinks that
This is very dangerous logic. If the constitution protects you from smells that you subjectively think are "nasty", to the point that we can make laws about it, then we can also ban public use of cars (someone might smell them!) and perfume (not everybody likes it, some people are allergic), not to mention incense, scented candles, barbecues, cheese, leaving the house without showering, etc. If you want to support general public bans, it had better be for things that are a threat to public health, not just annoying to you personally.
@@adudzik You're so confused. She can smoke inside her home, with the windows shut. Toxic cigarette smoke isn't just "annoying", like perfume... it's also toxic. Maybe learn about rights. Smoking isn't a right. Go back to Fox News now.

Now you are going back to saying that it's toxic, so you are proving my point: it matters, a lot, that cigarette smoke is a risk to public health. If it wasn't, the fact that you think it's "nasty" would be irrelevant. I don't know why you keep saying smoking isn't a right, neither myself nor Leibowitz has argued that it is so it seems like a straw man. Could you actually read my words and think about them before you respond again, instead of hurling insults? You don't have to act like Donald Trump, he's not your leader anymore.

@@minamur I think bans indoors have more to do with breathability, fire hazards and discomfort to non-smokers. I found it hard to breathe in some Vegas casinos when I was little. I don't care whether or not secondhand smoke is dangerous. My problem with it is that is smells terrible, and worse, gives me an instant a prolonged headache. Not to mention burning my throat and nose.

Your vehicle has killed cats, dogs, hedgegogs, birds, deer and all other sort of animals in their millions. @@jimjiminyjaroo300 I was asking a question. How can someone smoke for so long (55 years) and not get lung cancer?
@@techlover231 simply put cancer is genetics+carcinogens, some people don’t have the genetic predisposition and get lucky, despite engaging in cancer related behavior. Others can avoid everything and still get cancer.
@@lawdogattorneyatlaw4886 Thanks for the explanation. You don't know if you have that genetic predisposition, it's a bit of a lottery. Maybe you're lucky in one area ( ie smoking) but unlucky in other areas. I think unfortunately we all have a predisposition to something, so we need to be living a healthy life style for that reason.

Lol, her last comment about smoking is so funny to me. "If this little puff of smoke is so dangerous, imagine how dangerous the car exhaust is." Yeah, car exhaust is that bad.
I smoke cigarettes 🚬
I smoke two cigarettes a day and I love it
Wish I could do that anytime. When I smoked cigarettes. I almost always chained them together. Oof

How bout smoking and drinking when you turn fifty. It will take at least thirty years to catch up to you. Enjoy life in your golden years. Oh yeah....start eating junk food too...

You can talk to cool people even if you don’t d smoke.
Smoking. A chain-smoking persons often have no idea how foul their car, their apartment or house smells. Sometimes being close to multi-pack-a-day smokers is an exercise in civility. You don't want to be impolite and tell them that they stink. I suppose it is ultimately a matter of degree. One of my friends is addicted to cigarettes and I wish he would cut way back or quit. I feel badly for him when I hear people dismiss him as having no self respect.
I thank G-d for You
I'm sorry I must have missed your reply for so long. There is medical evidence for second hand smoke being unhealthy to people. I accept that as being objective. I don't accept homosexuality as being unhealthy. Looking back I just find it bizarre this argument took place between you and me. Smoking and homosexuality are two completely different things.
Amazing how the addiction to cigarettes can warp even the most intelligent persons brain.
Engaging in homosexual sex right next to me won't affect my health in way way, but your cigarette smoke in a closed environment will affect my health. Every genius has their flaws and with Fran it's her stupid views on "smoker's rights".

Smoking, so cool until you have emphysema, heart disease or cancer. Even nicotine craving is just that, physiologic craving.
Then dont smoke if you are that concerned...
its still cool, but you just have some difficulties to deal with. the hardships do not change how cool something is.

Do I even have to say how much I love this?
Yeah but sucks when I stink like cigarettes after visiting a smoke filled bar. I like in Tokyo so this happens every time I go out.
interesting and funny observation fran, but don't quite agree. I do think bars should be allowed to have smoking tho...arguments could be made against playing rock music, or playing pool, or even telling dirty jokes in bars....If I want a classy bar, with no smoke, and high morals, I'll go there. If I want a beer and a cigarette, and want to play acid rock on the box, i'll go there...when I go to n. york I want to unwind in a dive where I can get a cheap beer, sneek a cigarette, and get a bit raunchy. Sadly these spots are dissapearing all over....I remember "cheap shots" bar on 2nd ave, and miss it. The clean, square crowd is a drag, and that smoke- ban id forced morality in my book...If you don't like smoke then go somewhere else you uptight fuckers- you'll prolly get cancer anyhow! From being uptight.

@@fakerating What is your problem? You said: "Let's presume second hand smoke is actually GOOD FOR YOU." Your words. You wrote that. I was responding to it.
And one more thing: if you think perfumes aren't toxic, you're the one watching Fox. The cosmetics industry has been in regulatory battles for decades.

hmmm. i mean... like.... no, lol. like, she's funny, for sure, and what she says about gay bars and homophobia is true, but like....... no. about the smoking. like, no, dude. you dont even really have to refute something like that, you can kinda just dismiss it out of hand. when she says second hand smoke isnt dangerous, you dont even need a counterargument, you can just say "what? .....no, dude...."
a gay bar being popular and safe but not allowing smoking inside sounds like a win-win. you wont be raided by the police (as often, anyway. cops are still very homophobic) and you're less likely to fucking die of cancer. how is that a negative? imagine someone defending drinking motor oil like this
Sooooo sorry that you have to smoke outside cause your smoke will trigger my asthma. I rather not die if an attack because you're too fucking special to go outside. You can hear people doing the kiss up laughing at her speeches as of she is such an insightful person.
well, what happens is the same as second hand smoke. It's no different. that's an easy question.
I remember the late nights looking for a pack of smokes, it was horrible, even more so was that I quit because my Mother died from smoking, and I don't think any of us gave a shit whether or not she died from second hand smoke or the fact that she was a two pack a day user. It's regrettable that Fran jokes about this because what she's actually kidding herself about is Death. Not very many things I regret, but Smoking is one of them, and it will leave scars for the rest of my life.
