pepes is usually chicken or fish steamed in turmeric, lemongrass, basil and chili blend. it is a Javanese traditional food and its an acquired taste. it may not taste good at first but it grows on you.
Pepes ayam, made with kemangi leaf, coconut milk, salt, chili, chicken, wrapped in banana leaf. The kemangi and banana leaf wrap is what makes the pepes delicious and has that distinct aroma
Try gado-gado, mie ayam, nasi uduk, ketoprak. And u can visit Ragusa Italian Ice Cream, not far from your place. U can try nasi padang with rendang too. Soo good!
11:50: you call it Pepes. Pepes is basically a cooking method using banana leaf as a food wrappings, and then you might steam it or grill it. So it is basically a cooking method, but you could do it to food such chicken, tofu, fish, meat. You could as well mix it with any spices, chili is very common. Mushroom could also be added. Hope this will help. Enjoy your adventure in Jakarta, Indonesia, man.

11:47 Pepes ayam in Indonesian. Essentialy it's a steamed chicken wraped up in banana leaves, of course there's several spices mixed in, not sure about the specifics. That's about it: pepes is a way of cooking with banana leaves and ayam means chicken, put the two words together and you get pepes ayam, same as pepes "tahu" which means tofu. You get the idea This video is old but i hope that helps.
The leaf that u ate from the chicken is basil. This dish is called pepes ayam which is a chicken that has been marinated with turmeric, chilli, basil leaves n other spices and wrapped in banana leafs n steamed to cook it
Hat's off. I can't and I've been here over a year. "Coba" means try! You mean "gado gado" Cooked veg with peanut sauce and crackers. "Pepes" is steamed fish originally with yellow turmeric spices and chillies eaten with white rice always. You can't rent a moppet in Jakarta. You just use go-jek, someone taking you to places on a bike like Casey Neistat when he was in Jakarta.
"Pepes" is a cooking method where the main 'meat' and all necessary ingredients are wrapped in banana leaves and then grilled. As for the 'meat', it could be tofu, fish, mushrooms, chicken and such.
Hi Conner, while in Jakarta you should go to Sabang Street (Jalan Sabang) at night. The street is basically crowded with street food vendors. You can find just about any kinds of food there.. Enjoy your stay.
Hey man, nice video! Anyway, I want to to tell you one thing, be careful when eating Indonesian street food, especially fried food like that fried tempeh in the video. It's dangerous and unhealthy. It's not the tempeh that make it dangerous, it's the frying oil that they use. At 15:23 you can clearly see the oil is black. That indicates the oil has been used numerous of times before. It's very unhealthy and might cause multiple health problems. Frying oil can only be used 2 or 3 times maximum. If it turns black like in the video, it probably has been used more than 5 times. I don't know if you are going to read this but stay healthy!
I'm personally not into ABC sambal. You should try martabak telor with sour sauce called cuka. I think it'll be better. If you still in Jakarta, you can contact me to try some food in Sabang street. We can do food challenge across the street
Naah iya, biasanya saya juga kalo beli martabak telor di martabak hokky atau beli di martabak abang2 di pinggir jalan juga pake cuka, malah baru kali ini liat pake saos 😅
The chicken thing is pepes ayam. It’s basically a boiled chicken with spices Chili curry and they barbecue it to serve! Most are actually spicy. But pepes is anything wrapped in a banana leave or as we call it (Daun Pisang), and then cooked on an open fire but still in the banana leaf until u unwrap and eat! The sauce usually has turmeric, chilli, pepper, cabe merah or cabe ijo. Indonesian LOVE SPICE! Oh and the Tempe is made out of soy beans that are soaked in water then using ragu they fry it!
5:25 Man, ABC sauce is not the hottest sauce in Indonesia. The most spicy sauce as I remember is sambal jablay/mantah Btw, Why don't you try learning Bahasa Indonesia

ABC sauces belong to Heinz Kraft Indonesia. The brand is locally invented by ABC central food company long time ago. In 1998, the facility was sold to Heinz USA but the brand ABC itself belonged to the local owner (till today)

pepes is usually chicken or fish steamed in turmeric, lemongrass, basil and chili blend. it is a Javanese traditional food and its an acquired taste. it may not taste good at first but it grows on you.
@adink Lahm steam first. But there are other version steam + grill
Pepes ayam, made with kemangi leaf, coconut milk, salt, chili, chicken, wrapped in banana leaf. The kemangi and banana leaf wrap is what makes the pepes delicious and has that distinct aroma
Pepes ayam : chicken steam
Pepes tahu : tofu steam
Pepes is all wrapped by banana leaves
Try gado-gado, mie ayam, nasi uduk, ketoprak. And u can visit Ragusa Italian Ice Cream, not far from your place. U can try nasi padang with rendang too. Soo good!
11:50: you call it Pepes. Pepes is basically a cooking method using banana leaf as a food wrappings, and then you might steam it or grill it. So it is basically a cooking method, but you could do it to food such chicken, tofu, fish, meat. You could as well mix it with any spices, chili is very common. Mushroom could also be added. Hope this will help. Enjoy your adventure in Jakarta, Indonesia, man.
maann!! i really love you content bro!! especially at the end video!! God loves you Bro! AMEN!
I suggest you should go to BUBUR BARITO its really good and preety cheap dont try nasi goreng kebon sirih its overpriced
Hi Conner...
Glad to see a traveller vlogger who always remind everyone about faith like you. I have a same faith as you, so that makes me happy to see people like you who love love to share the Love of God. Anyway, i am lived in Jakarta currently and basically a local from North Sulawesi (Manado City). If you like to have a little help, contact me anytime. I'll be happy to help, and everything will be on me. Consider it as a treat of hospitality. Cheers...

Tempe di Amerika terkenal tau... banyak yang suka . Banyak bule jualan tempe
You get the idea
This video is old but i hope that helps.
14:46 not everyday. street food are not 100% healthy doh
Hi.. Conner i suggest you to come to Manado, North Sulawesi.. Come amd explore 😁

It should've been a moped instead of a moppet, did you mistyped 😂
@@kronigen Haaahaa... I don't know how to spell it, no, I didn't mis-typed it lol... Thanks!
"Pepes" is a cooking method where the main 'meat' and all necessary ingredients are wrapped in banana leaves and then grilled. As for the 'meat', it could be tofu, fish, mushrooms, chicken and such.
@@Si_nengatcha it can be grilled or steamed
Hi Conner, while in Jakarta you should go to Sabang Street (Jalan Sabang) at night. The street is basically crowded with street food vendors. You can find just about any kinds of food there.. Enjoy your stay.
Dude i eat tempe for lunch and dinner sometimes for breakfast, tempe for life...
God bless u!!!❤
I'm about gonna tell that but well said!
be carefull on the street's dude, there are some bad people roaming the street's
Just a tip in looking for a delicious street food, "just look at how crowded the tent is" ! You got it ! Very simple rule haha
Try boncabe level 30, it's the most spicy some sort like of powder but it's spicier than the original abc spicy sauce :)
Mickhael Albert Gunawan is not spicy but make my go to toilet for 1 hour
I'm personally not into ABC sambal. You should try martabak telor with sour sauce called cuka. I think it'll be better.
If you still in Jakarta, you can contact me to try some food in Sabang street. We can do food challenge across the street
Yeah, it's weird the chef didn't give the "martabak sauce"
@@iryuu1769 its martabak aceh, not martabak bangka or bandung or usual martabak
The most spicy sauce as I remember is sambal jablay/mantah
Btw, Why don't you try learning Bahasa Indonesia
Because it is not Universal Language... XD
@@LilyBeta but, why not if you want?
@@juljac5204 Simple. I don't. Though I dunno if in his case...
