Samhain, means both November in Irish, and Halloween. Samhain is the celebration of Halloween, where in celtic times, children would dress up in masks to protect them from spirits and monsters. During the night of Halloween, it was said that the veil between the spirit world and the human world was at its weakest, so spirits of all kinds would seep through. therefore to protect their children they would disguise them as monsters, and leave offerings to the spirits outside their homes or villages. The tradition of Halloween, originated from this, and has evolved into the classical trick or treating it is today from that. Mainly steming from Ireland, it spread to other Celtic countries.
