Just for clarification, yes obviously the numerator does NOT have to be > the denominator in criteria #1 and #2 since the cutoffs are 0.5 and 0.6, hence it can be a true exudative criteria even with a larger denominator than numerator. However, the point I was trying to illustrate is that as you increase the relative number of Protein or LDH (hence the numerator gets relatively larger, not *necessarily* larger than the denominator) you can better conceptualize the clinical context in which you'd have exudative effusions.
