As an American, I usually think the same when I hear people deny that the Civil War was about slavery, but it is a thing because not all education syllabi are the same. From school district to school district, often within the same county, you'll get vastly different learning experiences. We learned about Captain Cook, convicts and settlement... but nothing about the literal wars fought with the indigenous population. Thankfully, my parents bought me books on Aboriginal myths and legends, The Dreamtime etc. when I was a kid. It intrigued me, so when I got older and had access to wider sources of information, I educated myself.

We learned about Captain Cook, convicts and settlement... but nothing about the literal wars fought with the indigenous population.
