Not exactly rare, but I rep grinded for Winterspring Frost Saber when it was a huge time sink in vanilla and when I got it I realized I hate riding on cat mounts because their gait annoys me.
I got the Swift Zulian Tiger on the last week it was possible, but what I really wanted was the Raptor.
I get it. I got the Celestial Golem because it looks super cool, but then it flies in weird trajectories and that gets annoying. ^^
Speaking as someone who was doing that exact thing not even a year ago, it's a bit better now, but it's still about as annoying as working on Ravenholdt with a non-Rogue character. :/
I love how people are individuals have different opinions because cat mounts are my favorite 'gait' wise (Shadow Pan Cats).
Wolves are my favorite animal but their 'gait' annoys me! :D .. it makes me sad that I don't like any of the wolf mounts other then the hunter class wolfhawk.
simetra I spent 4 hours farming onyx eggs for the serpent dragons and realized I hate how they move forward so I would hold down W + A or D to move diagonally because it looks nicer that way
what I find amazing is you flying to each warbringer and they are actually there and not just two or three people just camping
Yeah I found that kind of amazing as well. Whenever I go chasing after Warbringers there are almost always 2-3 people camping them.
My rarest mount must be the Grove Warden, as it's not obtainable anymore.
My favorite mount is Time-Lost Proto Drake. You can also call it my luckiest. I had 20 days to spend on doing nothing, so I bought some gametime and decided to so some stuff. It was right before BFA pre-patch, so nobody wanted to do raids and stuff. I decided to farm some mounts, but realised quickly that the only mount that could fulfill my desires was the legendary and rumored Time-Lost Proto Drake.
I knew what had to be done. I heard rumors of how you couldn't just camp for it up in the cold Storm Peaks, you had to LIVE in the Storm Peaks. So I did what anyone would do when setting a goal. I planned my days, from when I wake up til I go to sleep. I got myself lots of food and sat down. For five days in a row I sat there. I got a party watching all the spawn points, and we researched the spawn timers. 2-8h. But the famed Time-Lost Proto Drake shared a spawn timer with another rare (at this point I'd call it a common). The infamous Vyragosa. It was said that Vyragosa spawned 9/10 times, and the Time-Lost Proto Drake spawned that 10th time.
Several nights I waited. Several times Vyragosa spawned, several times my persistance and patience was tested. Several times random people camped on MY spot and I just wanted to Typhoon them off a cliff. But I waited. I waited so Sargerasly long. And then, I read the mythic words. My party member spammed: "PROTO. PROTO. PROTO."
After 5 Days of barely any sleep, only sleeping the 2 first hours after every despawn, as it was guaranteed not to spawn, ot finally spawned. I swiftly clicked spacebar, my flight form activated and only God knows how tunnelvisioned I was. I saw for naught more than half a second before I took my decision. THAT PROTO DRAKE WAS GOING IN MY BAG. I got there, tagged the drake, and there it was. The so Lost-in-Time Drake of Proto. MY Reigns of the Time-Lost Proto Drake. I couldn't believe it. For 2 minutes I couldn't even look at the screen. I had the Time-Lost Proto Drake. My everlonging dream came true. The mount that all my friends, with just a gaze, would instantly know THEY DIDN'T HAVE. I had it. I was finally special.
And that was the story of how I got the Time-Lost Proto Drake.
Grove warden isnt that rare tho, Time-lost is more rare^^
Man, it's great to read another's story so similar to my own. I managed to get in 4 days. Sat my sorry ass in one location which was known to be a convergence of its flight paths. Kudos to your hunt because I used NPCScan & just left Wow running in the background while I tended to other things, but I never left that spot the 4 days I spent waiting for it to spawn. Great times. Got the time lost proto-drake while flying through Storm Peaks omw to Ulduar, never farmed for it, just ran into it. Was on my paladin, and he was the most stereotypical ret pally ever, human, tier 2, golden paladin hair. When I saw it, I insta-dismounted when flying, one shot it with judgement, then bubbled before I hit the ground. Must've been infuriating for anyone who saw. Most rewarding farm for a mount for me was probably farming for the Void Talon of the Dark Star. Looked for it in Nagrand once a day for every day in WoD when I went to check the bmah. Took me like a year and a half to get. Going through the portal is great too, such a cool and unique experience.

I had the same thing happen on my warrior. I actually died killing it, but I got to my body in time to loot it.
I had just finished farming my netherdrake, too. I was so excited about it and I ended up replacing it almost immediately.

Dude me too! And I also play a Ret Paladin, but a Draenei.
The protodrake thing happened to me but with Draenor mounts and while leveling alts, so I had to inmediatly change to a max lvl character and hope that no one happened to be there looking for them
And that's how I got Poundfist, the pig from frostfire ridge and the riverbeast in Talador
After farming for both invincible and ashes of al'ar for 2+ years I got them both on the same day. That was one of the best moments I've had in the entire game
I love using the addon Rarity for mount farming. It lists all the rare drop mounts you are missing ordered by expansion, tracks your attempts at them, calculates an approximate chance of getting it at however many attempts you are at and easily displays this information by telling you wether you are lucky or unlucky to get the mount at your next attempt.
Mount collecting is a serious addiction. Are you sure you want to enter into this willingly? :O
I was just mindlessly doing LFR Tomb of Sargeras on my druid and after I killed Mistress Sassz'ine, the Abyss Worm dropped and now it is probably the rarest mount I have right now considering the drop chance is unknown
I'm on a 6 mount farm rotation at the moment. Still working on KTs Ashes of Al'ar, Flametalon of Alysrazor, Pureblood Fire Hawk, Clutch of Ji'Kun, Solar Spirehawk, and finally my girl Onyxia..
Before I quit around mid Pandaria, I recall farming raven lord for about 1 1/2 years and getting the virteous stone drake in like 2 weeks. Before all that, I farmed mounts and hunted for rare pets on my hunter which were honestly the most fun I had in WoW. Loque'Nahak and Time Lost Proto Drake were probably my greatest nightmares as I was in middle school at the time

"Reins of the Infinite Timereaver" is maybe my rarest. Dropped after only a couple runs when I was gearing a resto shaman alt.
(Still running firelands for that damn motherf*cking bird from Alysrazor. Lost count on number of runs)

Same here, my keybind is R for Flight Form but on my warrior it's Battle Shout so I always find my self jumping and Battle Shouting after combat all the time. It's just not the same lmao
I casually walked into Tempest Keep years ago because I had nothing else to do. I was like... "Eh, something might drop!" The phoenix did. It was my first time there.
My friend almost unfriended me in game. He's still farming it. No regrets.

It's even more rewarding when a current content rare mount drops and you win the roll against your party members. I remember running Utagard Pinnacle in Wrath, and thinking to myself just before the mounted boss died, "what if the Blue Protodrake drops"? Well, it dropped and everyone was stoked. We all 'need' rolled for it, and I ended up with the mount. I've never seen it drop since. I felt like a badass at the time because I already had the Red Protodrake.
I've Mount farmed for 5years, Got the 400 mount achieve and im only missing 4 drops before BFA came out. it's really addictive and it becomes your playstyle, My rarest mount Probaly Spectral tiger, My luckiest mount probaly Heavenly onyx cloud and the other 4 World boss drops. and a addon i reccomend is Rarity

I joined a guild in Burning Crusade, I worked 2nd shift and I was so excited to find a group that started raids at 2am. In my first Kara run with the group Atuman's mount dropped and I won the roll. I felt guilty since I was brand new, so I passed it to the next highest roll : A player who quit the game almost immediately. Just prior to BFA launch I was doing old dungeon transmog runs and finally was awarded what was rightfully mine almost 10 years later.
Edit: Rarest mount I have is either the original Amani War Bear or the Big Blizzard Bear from blizzcon 3(?)
I am also addicted to mount farming...help....the one I spent the most on was the Onyxian mount. Every week for about 6 months straight with two of my friends. Some of my favorite memories in this game were spent mount or achievement farming. :)
Invincible - I don't know how many years I sunk into this on multiple characters. I finally got him late last year.
Raven Lord - I think about two years of intermittently trying to get it.
Mimiron's Head - Was running my friend through Ulduar for tansmogs and it dropped; she gave it to me because the face freaked her out lol.
Last week I just thought "oh, ill just do ICC while im in Northrend real quick". Got Invincible. I was in shock for a good half hour, only ever done ICC every now and again and for the shadowmourne quests.
DonkeyKiin i am so envious. You are like a friend of minr, he had 3 of it because he always gets it. And me? I have been farming him for close to 2 years on 3 chars and have never gotten it ahaha
I got my Invincible just a few weeks ago. I shrieked so loud that my roommate thought I had hurt myself. Only took 5+ years...
It's mental how it happens, just have to run them like you just passing through and it pops. One day I just want to fly past and spot the time lost protodrake :D

3 fav stories - I farmed invincible on multiple characters like crazy, had a nooby friend over explaining the routine and I said "and now we loot The Lich King and get nothing, to repeat again" - presto, an Invincible.
Farmed the Pandaria bosses and Rukhmar to no avail (during Legion of course). One day happened to fly in Spires of Arak (to try get a toy I think) and saw Rukhmar being attacked at around 70%. flew down, voila, a Spirehawk.
Time Lost Proto Drake - sat in Peaks every possible moment during wrath and most of cata. I stuck NPCscan on and played AVP for the 360 (yep, quite some time ago). Decided to glance at the screen, and NPCscan had failed to sound off, yet the drake had been found. As my heart sank (thinking it'd been long gone) I saw it phase just out of sight, and flew after it. Spazzing out super hard, flew off and killed it.
Basically the key to getting mounts is to not expect them. No, not think "it's unlikely", as in to completely 100% be certain it wont drop and you're just there for the routine or happenstance.
Bonus that wasn't mine: little brother (around 12 at the time) wanted the Aeonaxx mount and randomly got up during dinner to go to his PC to check - and it spawned. Sometimes sixth sense can be a thing I guess.
Rarest mount - probably the opposite to yours, the Razzashi raptor (just went for it with my father for a few months before removal)
Longest grind - so far most notorious one was 226 runs of Stratholme (post nerf) for the Deathcharger.
I had the blue and azure drake drop from malygos in one run. I already had the blue drake but it was pretty neat.

I'm getting obsessed with the collections. And I have - virtually none. I think it's because when I went through most the content, I never paid attention to it. But now I just love being able to go back, not struggle on the content and just farm these things. I'm with you! I also really want to vicious mounts, because not all of them are available anymore, so I want to go for those things. I just suck.

Once it was dead in Storm Peaks. And then years later I saw it (again dead) in WoD North Eastern Nagrand and thought to my self "devs.. are you trolling me?"
I got the reins of the ravenlord back in the day, when you still had to have a druid in your party to do their quest. Was just so cool looking back in the day.
I have been trying to get the raven lord mount for years i have 5 toons logged off outside and still not gotten it

I only have 2 rare mounts and both of them I got from just random dungeon runs trying to level up my character. The mounts are "Drake of the north wind" and "Rivendare's deathcharger". I'm pretty happy about that. :)
It took 3 years farming invincible, when it finally dropped the relief was just enormous.

I started farming it on my 12 characters, got it after the 4th run, then I told my friend I’d run him on the rest of my guys using lockout share and it dropped again 3 runs later....
Mount farming is definitely what i spend most of my time in WoW doing. Rarest mount is the Voidtalon that i was super lucky to find. Didn't camp for it or anything, but I knew enough to look for the portals everytime I passed by the spawn points. Saw it while passing by the shadowmoon points once and nearly had a heart attack. I've never seen any of the portals since.
Time lost proto drake, fuck that mount, i mean i got it, but it took me like 2 weeks of camping and i remember during the first week, i was camping the spawn points (way back in wotlk) and i saw it, i got closer and suddenly he died in front of me, some dude killed him, i stood there and he said "lol, i just got here" and flew away...you can guess how happy i was lmao.
Breathing Debris yeah I was farming him for a while and I had npc scan on and went to do a dungeon well when I came out he was dead in front of me I was pretty pissed
1. Rarest one is probably Core Hound along with some other mounts I have that can not be looted, given, or bought anymore.
2. I don't have an addon.
3. Quickest mount for me to get was Astral Cloud Serpent. 1 run.
4. Longest mount farm for me was Ashes of Al'ar. Farmed it for years.
I have every holiday rare drop mount except for the Big Love Rocket from Love is in the Air. After 7 years of running the dungeon I haven't been able to get it to drop.

I don't play WoW but in GW2 they introduced mounts in the latest expansion. When they advertised it they only revealed 4 mounts which everyone was hyped for. The day after the expansion came out someone realized they had also made a secret griffon gliding mount. To get it you had to finish the expansion and do a quest line and pay a pretty good sized amount of gold for it. I spent the rest of the weekend rushing through all the content and quest so that Monday I could be the first person in my guild to have the griffon mount when assembled for guild missions. Still my favorite of all the mounts so it was time and money well spent!
I have a mount story.
This takes place back in TBC, me and some friends play together in a guild, and we decide to go and do Tempest Keep, and we get to Kael'thas Sunstrider, kill him and the Ashes of Al'ar mount drops, our GM then Ninja loots it, disbands the guild and then server transfers, but most of the players in the guild actually reports him and Blizz cancels his account.
Either way since then back way in TBC, I've never seen the mount drop ever again, and I've been going there every week for 10 years, Ashes of Al'ar have never dropped for me since that occured.
I feel you, got over 200 runs on Ashes of Alar.. Losing a bit of my sanity everytime I hear "Perhaps I underestimated you. It would be unfair to make you fight all four advisors at once, but... fair treatment was never shown to my people. I'm just returning the favor."

I was in love with the firelands raid, for whatever reason. I farmed it for forever. I started playing with my boyfriend, like 2 years back,, and he had went with me on one of the runs I think for completion since he had missed firelands raid. But of course, the one time Alysrazor drops the mount, it drops, and he gets it. I was all up for a fair roll since it was his first time through, and now he rides it everytime we play together even to this day.

Was doing the headless horseman run during Hallows End, all I needed was the hallowed helm in order to get the "What a long strange trip it's been" achievement, and I got the headless horseman mount first, and then I got it again the next day, and then again a few days later...my husband still doesn't have it and he has never let me live it down.
In the BFA prepatch I got Astral Cloud Serpent, Raven Lord, Drake of the South Wind and Mim's Head all within a span of 3 weeks, was just smashing all those lockouts across 9 characters but god damn it was worth it.
Vega it took me 7 month’s to Get Raven lord 😪
i think one of the hardest mounts to get was the Lucid Nightmare. Before it was figured out it required hundreds of people working together to figure out the secret scavenger hunt and then once it was done spending hours in a mindless infinite maze looking for glowing orbs and their pedestals

I've wanted Mimiron's Head since WOTLK (10 years) and I FINALLY got it a few months ago. I actually fell out of my chair when I saw it, because I was CONVINCED that was the one I'd never have. I can't even tell you how many runs I had done beforehand. I also got Time-Lost Proto drake. I nearly had a heart attack for that one as well and just ran around the apartment cheering, lol. I love mount collecting and those are two of the mounts I always DREAMED of having.

My rarest mount is also my luckiest mount. It is the Drake of the North wind. I looted it back when Cataclysm had just launched, my first run in normal mode Vortex Pinnacle. Our group, unaware of what was going to happen, slain Altairus. Then the tiny picture of a Drake appears in the loot box. Everyone goes for Need. And out of the five players I am the lucky one !
I have a lot of rare mount that I had been farming for years, but this one is favourite memory of mount looting.

Greetings Crendor and to the Crendor Community! I'd say one of the rarest mounts I have is Baron Rivendare's Deathcharger. Pre-Cata I was racing a fellow guildie to get it and on the 41st run, it dropped for me! While I have never had a mount drop first try for me (unlike my buddy who got Ashes of A'lar his FIRST TRY *grumble grumble*), 2 years and 58 total runs later it FINALLY dropped during a bald Kael'thas glitch xD
I apparently have 188 mounts and I think my "rarest" is Grove Warden? I also the ZG mounts :P
I did feel REAL good when I got the mount from doing ICC Lich King Heroic back in the day with my guild. But mostly cause the fun of the fights.
I personally hate when Blizzard removes mounts or stuff that's like that. I think it's bad and unfair to new players or people that might have left. I don't really give a shit about the elitist pricks out there that feel their micro penis isn't as big a deal now that they have something in a digital space that others don't lol. It's so dumb.
I only care to have something for myself, not cause others don't have it.
The God Emperor I wouldn’t consider the grove warden rare. Less people prob have the mythic archimonde mount and that’s been soloable for over a year now, even tho grove warden was removed

I've gotten 2 mounts I never realized were a thing at the time. I started WoW again when WoD came out, and I was leveling my main Dwarf Shaman, and I was at the point when I could grind dungeons like Stratholme. My group killed the final boss and he dropped Rivendare's Deathcharger, which is my favorite mount I own to this day. The second mount was the Timereaver from the Timewalking Dungeons. It was a WotLK dungeon, and I got it as a random dungeon reward. I had no idea that could happen, and it's my greatest show-off mount I have. I know there are better, but it's just so cool to me and not everyone has it.
It's not wow, but I got the rathalos first try in ff14 but I still can't get the Titan mount :(
Hey Crendor, I'm a long time lover of farming mounts, since BC. I think my best feeling of getting was when I was farming Argent Dawn rep by doing Baron runs in Stratholme, solo, and before I got exhalted the mount dropped. My rarest I think are Clutch of jin-kun from mists and experiment 12-B from Dragon soul, and the corrupted firehawk from having 250 mounts. I don't run any addon for mount farming specifically I just do the dungeons and raids getting pets and transmogs, hoping for mount drops. But I remember running a rare mob patrol map addon at some point that showed all the patrol paths of rare mobs on the mini map. Helps with thoose pesky Draenor rare that drops mounts. Have fun mount farming!

My friend, who has been playing longer than me, always wanted to get the Blue Drake from The Nexus(?) in Northrend. The first time I helped him, it dropped for me. I gave it to him, and we've been mount farming together ever since.
I don't know how rare mounts are, but my most treasured mount is The Lucid Nightmare. My luckiest is Fire Hawk from Firelands. And ones that I really want that I still don't have is Ashes, The Green Infernal, and the Charhound.

The camel mount back when it was current content: I've found the figurine over 15 times and it was never the real one. Now that cross realm is a thing it's impossible to find it. Recently had a friend overseas invite me onto their empty server pre bfa, and finally got the mount. Best addon for farming it is Camel Spotter. I love mount collecting, as almost all of them have a story or memory of how I got it.
The only mount I ever farmed was the violet protodrake. It was during Wrath and I spent all year doing the holiday achievements. The craziest part was during Children's Week, I wasn't max level yet so I powerleveled all week to get to 85 so I could even get into the dungeon for the achievement. Then I paid people to carry me thru the dungeon after the event was over but I still had the whistle.
I am really proud of the Lucid Nightmare, even though its easy to find a guide to solve now its still a lot of effort and really cool puzzles for a cool looking shadow unicorn
The rarest thing I have is the "Swift" version of the TBC flying machine. I spent so much time and money trying to find that damned Khorium Ore that just spawns randomly on the mineral nodes in Outland.
Same thing for the Mekgineer's Chopper, and now everyone has them.
But like you mentioned, once I finally made it, the paint-job was awful so I just went back to flying the only thing I'd ever flown: the generic, golden, taxi Gryphon.
Something that I farmed for a long time were the Ashes of Al'ar which took about a half year of attempts between me and my brother sharing game-time.
Same thing with the rep-grind for the Nether Drakes.
Right now I'm trying to get that stupid Storm Drake out of the Valarjar cache, but no joy yet.
The one thing I got lucky on was that fox out of the Nightfallen Withered Training chest. My brother had been doing those runs for months and I think I got about 5 runs in when the Quest Item dropped for it. I use it sometimes, but my Dwarf looks ridiculous on it so I stick to my regular Brown Ram when forced into ground-only areas.
My favorite mount is definitely the sunhide gronnling from Dreanor. I got it on launch week and there were about 2 full 40 man raid groups of both alliance and horde camping for the boss and all hell broke loose when he finally spawned.
My luckiest one was probably the Grey Riding Camel. Found my first camel statue, and it was immediatly the one who got me to the area with the rare. My longest was, or to be precise, still is, the old Midnight from Karazhan. Never got it, never even seen it drop. The one I'm most proud of would be the Pureblood Fire Hawk. I got it back in Cata times when it still was a guaranteed drop from Ragnaros HC
One single time my brother and I decided to just fuck around ICC on one of his mount runs. He'd been at it for quite a while. Lo and Behold Invincible's reins drop. Since we're both there, we give it a roll.
I won, and he's been peeved about it ever since, even after his two spawn of horridon drops.
Idk if you have it, but Lucid Nightmare was added in Legion. The mount itself is okay. But the journey to get it takes you through a TON of old game content, classic and Wrath of the lich king, it's incredible
My rarest mount is most likely Spawn of Horridon, which dropped not once, but twice for me while I was farming for Clutch of Ji'kun(which I still don't have)! I also have two of the three Primordial Direhorns from the Warbringers as well, but my favorite one, even if it's not particularly rare, is the Prestigious War Wolf/Horse that you get from doing the Free for All quests on the Broken Isles. It was a big surprise to me once I actually got it, because I didn't even know it existed beforehand, and a very welcome one.
Rare mounts I have: Ashes of Al'ar, vitrious stonedrake, swift white hawkstrider, that mount from Sethekk Halls, de mount from the old Kharazhan, one of the Warscout mounts from Pnadaria.. Been farming the Stratholme mount and Invincible for aaaaaaaaaaaaages. Luckiest mounts - 9 fishing casts in Boralus and I had me de Great Sea Ray. A day later, the hyena mount dropped, during questing, in Voldun. I wasn't even farming - I was questing. Don't know about a mount farming add on though. Great video, and happy mountfarming! My rarest mount is the Grey Riding Camel from Uldum. I found a single camel statue while farming herbs in Uldum back in Cata and BAM! It led me to the camel hoarder boss. My luckiest mount drop was getting BOTH blue drakes from Malygos at the same time on like my 4th attempt ever. My most elusive mount is the Fiery Warhorse from old Karazhan, over 100 attempts, no mount.
My rarest mounts are probably the Onyxian Drake, The Pureblood Fire Hawk, and the Ashes of Al'ar. The Onyxian Drake was the first epic mount that I had drop for me. I had been farming it ever since I could first solo Onyxia's Lair and I was ecstatic when it dropped! The Drake of the North Wind and the Raven Lord have evaded me even though I've spent countless hours farming the bosses of those dungeons. I have 174 mounts, but a friend of mine has around 400.
The easiest way to pad out those mount numbers is doing reps that reward 3-6 recolors of the same mount like the Shado-pan Tigers or Golden Lotus Cranes.
Been running Sethekk Halls in Outland since Wrath, and just last year, I got the Raven Lord FINALLY!! Probably my favorite ground mount! The luckiest I got from a mount was probably getting Invincible to drop in ICC during a 3-man run of it. Once we saw it on the loot table, we all rolled for it. A 1/3 shot at it, and I got it! Been one of my favorite mounts so far!
All the Things; Rarity, & NPC Scan. I have 378 mounts and still don't have Invincible. Invincible was the reason I started farming mounts. I got Ashes of Alar in one chance and Jikun in 3 tries. Onyxia took me over 200 tries. The mount I am proud of is the alternate color Sky Golem for getting 300 toys. I am proud because i didn't collect toys, but I made the effort just for that mount and had fun collecting toys in order to get the mount.
I don't do LFR where possible, only if there's something I REALLY need. I did two LFR runs during WoD for some trinket or ring I needed and ended up getting two of those 'Hey you queued as healer when nobody else was, thanks!' bags that gave me Black Primal Raptor and White Polar Bear. On a slightly related note I also got the Infinite Timereaver randomly from a TW boss on one of the first ones I ever ran. I use that as my primary mount now, it's so beautiful.
Always nice to see that the most fun thing in a new xpac is to farm old world content for mounts
Aeonaxx back in Cata in Deepholm. Waited for 3.5 months and studied while waiting. But literally just logged in and waited. Hands were shaking when the rare alert went off!
Not aware if you got the Lucid Nightmare mount but there is an add on made for the final stage so you can track the room puzzle algorithm as you go and easily retrace your steps
I got the Black War Talbuck from actually PVPing in Halaa for marks during BC, though admittedly I farmed the powder during Wrath.
I've never really been a fan of mounts that are just rare drops, luck doesn't make me appreciate it. But I appreciate the mounts that took time and work, like the regular Talbucks, Cenarian Hippogryph or the Ratstallion, or my Darkmoon Dancing Bear. Can't forget my Epic Flyinging Machine I built in BC.
Though in terms of luck, I did get both Brewfest mounts within days of eachother. Most of my luck has been spent on pets. Got a Disgusting Oozeling while passively killing mobs while training my Venomhide Raptor and got Mr.Pinchy on my 3rd cast into a Highland Mixed School and 2nd wish.
Fiery War Horse is probably my favorite because it took me literal years until it finally dropped for me late into Legion.
As a mount collector I would love to see a videos of your going through your mount catalog and getting weekly updates on this, even if you don't get anything for the week the hunt is part of the reward. I'm at 375 between both factions 323 individual. While I have the Zulian Tiger as well, my craziest mount story is when my friend ran Stratholme for the Deathcharger and he whispered me that he got it. Then he said "Let's go get one for you now." I of course thought he was crazy, but sure enough it dropped. And that's kind of what started me as a collector.
I think my rarest one is the swift springstrider you get from farming eggs during noblegarden, i spent 3 or so hours just running around razor hill and bloodhoof village just to get a mount that i have never used since...
I'm a pretty casual player but the mount I put the most time into was the flamebreaker hypogryph (i think that's what it's called) from doing the molten front dailies. Took me something like two months and when I got it I was so satisfied. I still worked in the molten front for another month getting all of the achievements for the flamebreaker title.
Voidtalon of the Dark Star! if I recall correctly it only spawns for about 10 minutes after a certain amount of time after reset. My heart was pounding so fast when I saw the portal
I got Invincible and Midnight (old version) the first time/run I started to farm them. I also have the blazing drake, clutch from throne, both firelands mounts, mimiron's head, ashes, tot4w mount, and a few others. I farmed the crap out of those after going casual several years ago. There are several that still elude me, like Horridon's spawn, the experiment, and the time-lost protodrake. I've had the time-lost proto die in front of me on several occasions. The only add-on I use is rarity for mount farming.
I agree on going back to old content to look for stuff. I adore it. Only doing max-level stuff is like only seeing the tip of the iceberg in this game. There is so much stuff out there gathering dust and I love going back and checking it out even if it is just to get some transmog or to run it to get a mount.
It took me 3 months to get my time lost proto drake. I camped all day, and did nothing else until I got it (finally got it with a friend). My two luckiest drops were, 1. got invincible on my first lich king kill, and 2. got the astral Cloud Serpent, and onyxian Drake in the same night. I still hunt for aeonaxx, and his mount drop.
A mount I have a lot of fondness for is the Grove Warden. A random group of heroic raiders got it for me for free on my birthday (which was like a week before it would no longer be available). They didn't even know it was my birthday. It was very memorable when I finally was able to ride that thing well into Legion on all my characters!
Swift Zulian Tiger (Orange retired version) I had been farming it since ZG was endgame content. I didn't go in looking for gear, I went in looking for that mount. It finally dropped in Wrath!
Swift Spectral Tiger: My husband forked over the real money to buy the Loot Card for me on my birthday before the TCG was to be retired.
These def mean a lot to me. Not only 'WERE' they the only Cat Mounts you could use as Horde, but I obtained both with the help of loved ones! My guildie, a Tauren Boomkin ran with me in ZG every week to farm that boss and my sweet husband for the Spectral Tiger
I think my rarest mount is probably Rivendare's Deathcharger (I think a lot of people probably have it now since it's been out so long, but idk) I got it while just leveling a random character with a friend and doing the dungeon. When Rivendare died, I alt-tabbed and then my friend was like, "Hey, what's this Rivendare's Deathcharger thing?" when the loot popped up. Fatest I've ever tabbed back into a game.
I have that same adoration for my Blood-Tempered Ranseur that you do for your tiger mount. I got that thing for killing Dar'Khan way back when Burning Crusade first came out and it's no longer available. I still use it on my paladin to this day to show my pride for the Blood Knights.
I haven’t played since 5.4 but I had 150 something mounts (I remember getting the green kite and then a few others.) Mounts were literally the main reason I started playing- I was one of the first people in my server to get the dragonhawk for 100 back in Wrath when that was actually really hard to get.
Anyways- my rarest would definitely be the Time-Lost Protodrake. It took a few weeks of camping, and I even saw it’s corpse a couple of times. I was using a couple of addons- one to give me an overlay of it’s patrol, and another that made a crazy loud noise and auto targeted the rare spawn if I was close. To this day it is still one of my most prized possessions, and my favourite of the protodrakes. Such a beautiful mount- that icy blue maw makes my skin tingle just thinking about it~
As for my luckiest mount- that would have to be Baron Rivendare’s Deathcharger. I remember it vividly because I had only done maybe like 40 or 50 runs through Stratholme back when it had that absurd 1 in 5000 drop rate or whatever it was before they buffed it. And on the run I got it, I was skyping with a friend of mine, and since he knew I was grinding for the mount, I was going to trick him into thinking I got it by freaking the hell out. But RIGHT as I was thinking of doing that it actually dropped for real, and we both freaked out genuinely. I might be a Horde player but that blue deathcharger looks way too epic to pass up.

I really want to get back into it- so when the money is right I’m gonna hop in, grind to a high enough level, and dive back into my now very long list of mounts I need to catch up on. *Rarity* is by far the best mount farming addon imho :) Shows how what mounts you're missing, how many times you've done the boss that drops it, and what the drop chance is. I've always liked farming mounts but after getting that one it was much easier to keep track of them all, and you also forget which ones you're missing if you don't have a proper addon.
I got the Deepholm dragon mount back in the Cata days on my priest. I just camped spawn with NPC scan for 8 hours while I played Fallout 1 on my laptop. Just barely managed to beat the encounter before dying!
I farmed the time lost proto drake for like 18 months and never found it. Saw the corpse once, that stung.
I think the rarest mount I have is the OG non-epic Brewfest Ram from the first ever Brewfest. Most recent mounts I got were the Spawn of Horridon from ToT and the Armored Skyscreamer 2 days after BFA launched. They are now the only mounts I use as I run across Zandalar hanging out with King Rastakhan.
My frost wyrm is my favorite. I've earnedit during wrath and was so proud. Its kinda easy to get now, but it still brings back memories of wrath
My rarest mount is the giant chicken. I got it from somebody streaming on Twitch even though I wasn’t watching, I was just sort of there in Stormwind at the right time.
It was cool, it was the same day Holly showed hers off in Guild Grumps.
Most of my rare mounts such as Rivendares, White Hawk Strider, Blue Proto Drake ect I got from the old Call to Arms for tanks back in Cata
I've collected some kinda rare mounts but the rarest thing I grinded for was actually a pet, the dark whelping. I literally spent 3 full days over the summer mindlessly bashing dragon whelps in the badlands for it. It's still my most treasured pet to this day purely because of all the work I put into getting it.
I haven't really cared about mounts since vanilla, I just ride one that suits my mog.
However, I love the reactions when I get a lucky drop. It started when I got the Infinite Timereaver. It was really confusing at the time when everyone in the group said "grats", since I had no idea how rare it was.
My best "mount farming memory" was from an ICC mog run and got Invincible. I knew it was pretty rare, so I decided to wait with equipping it.
I queued up for LFR Kil'jaeden, and once he was down and everyone had looted, I equipped it. A few people went crazy and thought it was a bug. I played along until someone checked the loot, and concluded that that it must have been looted beforehand.
Good times.
I spent years farming the Onyxian Drake, finally got it and then four hours later i got the Spawn of Horridon from Throne of Thunder and then the Drake of the South Wind from Al'Akir a few days later.
I felt really good that week.
edit: The OG Brewfest Ram from the first Brewfest. Unless you did the quest during the event itself you can't get it anymore since they removed it after 07
I don't know what my rarest mount is, but the luckiest mount I got was from an Argus Rare Elite mob that's usually an objective for a WQ. I didn't even know it could drop a mount. Was pretty stoked that happened. The mount I am currently working towards is a mount that requires you collecting other mounts; the Fel Firehawk recolor for collecting 250 mounts. I have 208 in to the achievement so I am getting there!
Rarest Mount:
Headless Horseman's Mount. Got it my 2nd year trying, but then I got Invincible 2 weeks later.
Addons:
AllTheThings is a good addon if you plan on collecting transmog on top of mounts.
A must have combo is TomTom Waypoints and Paste since one allows you make waypoints to certain coordinates and the other lets you paste even more coordinates.
The only website I use is SimpleArmoury since it produces a clean and organized version of the Blizzard UI which helps you look at things like mounts with ease. Might just be me, but following a strict guideline to farm mounts sounds like it'd take the fun out of it.
Luckiest Mount:
Day I undeleted my priest, I went to the Timeless Isle to obtain some gear to get myself into LFR. I killed Huolon when he spawned and got the mount which lead me to buy 280 flying and farm out Cloud Serpent rep on a class I thought I didn't like. It's been my main ever since.
Mount that hasn't dropped:
Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent. I have a ton of 90+ alts and I try to kill Sha of Anger on them all every week, but still haven't gotten lucky.
I'm not the biggest mount farmer in general but I went really hard on the paragon mounts in legion. I got every one within a couple of months...apart from the one I wanted. It took over a year of four exalted characters doing rep missions every day and funnelling their rep tokens to my human but I finally got my Wild Dreamrunner and it's lovely.
I got the Garn Nighthowl right at the start of WoD when basically no one had it, it was a drop from a rare spawn. was so cool back then
I was farming transmog off of Tempest keep. Plate leggings and they didnt drop, but what did drop was ashes of alar. Rarely use it but when i do i feel good. A mount i didnt farm from drop chance but got through farming gold was the sky golem and i use that all the time one of my most favorite mounts in game.
My rarest mount is the venom hide ravasaur, the quest line was removed when cataclysm launched. The luckiest mount would have to be the azure drake, got it by chance on a random heroic during WoTLK. And The mount I farmed forever and never got was the Time lost protodrake, spent so much time just flying around with silver dragon on.
