At 50:24, the blood clot was the one thing that temporarily slowed down an otherwise outstanding 2006 season. After this start, he was excellent until the end of the regular season and phenomenal in the postseason. He really only struggled here in the 4th largely due to some misplays and bad luck. He put on a clinic with his changeup his first 3 1/3 innings. At 11:08, outstanding 3-1 changeup to Biggio and an excellent changeup inside to strike out Biggio swinging at 11:50. Another changeup with great location down and away to Lane at 26:04 and back inside with a changeup to strike out Lane swinging at 26:56. He started Burke off with an 86 mph fastball over the inside corner at 28:17 and got him looking at a 77 mph changeup over the inside corner for a 3-pitch strikeout at 29:03. Glavine struck out hitters at a much higher rate than he had since 1998 and an almost identical rate to 1998 because he was throwing that changeup inside in 2006. He got Taveras to swing and miss with another filthy 78 mph changeup away at 49:17, threw an 87 mph fastball right by Taveras down the middle at 49:51, and made Taveras look bad with another 78 mph changeup down and away for another strikeout at 50:06. Glavine was dominating with changeups between 77-79 mph and barely needed his fastball until the 4th and he did have his good fastball by 2006 Glavine standards at consistently 88-89 mph for a solid disparity between his fastball and 77-81 mph changeup. Lane was actually late on the 89 mph fastball swinging on 3-0 at 53:38. Glavine also threw an 88 mph fastball by Ensberg up in the zone at 1:30:25 and then got another very weak groundball hit back to him on an 81 mph changeup at 1:31:30. After Taveras led off the 5th with a triple, Glavine actually finished strong. Glavine got ahead of Biggio 0-2 with another nasty changeup at 1:23:59 and finally got some luck in his direction with the strikeout on the fastball up and in at 1:24:45. When Houston loaded the bases in the 4th, you could see Glavine switch to his fastball to try to get out of it. He came right after Burke with an 89 mph fastball for a strike at 56:36. He evened the count with an 89 mph fastball with excellent location over the inside corner at 57:40. But Glavine didn't get the call inside on the 2nd fastball at 56:53 and wound up walking Burke.
Glavine had been getting a lot of swings and misses on the changeup like the one to Everett at 40:18. But Houston was also out in front and trying to pull the changeup away for weak groundouts like the one hit by Berkman at 13:25 and the double play hit into by Quintero at 42:17. Very weak groundball back to Glavine by Ensberg on the changeup away at 27:27.
When Houston got to Glavine in the 4th, it started with Biggio's hit that dropped right in front of Chavez at 50:53 and the error by Chavez allowing Biggio to reach 2nd. Glavine threw a good 80 mph changeup down and away and Berkman was lucky to get the bloop hit just over Woodward's head at 51:49. Glavine threw another good 3-1 changeup at 54:01, but better hitting by Lane. Glavine was still going for the borderline pitch like the fastball at the knees and right over the outside corner at 59:46 and nearly got out of the inning at 1:00:04, but Delgado just missed the double play. Glavine's changeup was in the dirt at 1:02:23, but Lo Duca still has to block that pitch with a runner on 3rd.

At 1:08:55, Beltran already had 39 home runs, but would only finish with 41. Likewise, Delgado entered this game with 34 and quickly got to 38, but wound up stuck on 38 as he finished the season with a 13 game homerless drought and slump. Although he got to raise his average with Houston playing straight up at 14:13 and then after Beltran hit a hanging curveball for a double at 36:30, Delgado hit a better curveball to drive him in. These two were an extremely formidable 3-4 combination and both could always get on base. After they both walked to load the bases, Wright drove them both in with a double to deep right at 1:15:30. Wright was still the 3rd slugger in 2006, but produced the most in this game. Wright turned on a fastball for another double to leadoff the 8th at 2:01:59 and then stole 3rd with 1 out at 2:04:14. It didn't matter because Valentin doubled on a hanging curveball at 2:06:15. But this Met team had speed up and down the lineup, including from power threats. Chavez had gotten the Mets on the board with his speed at 23:10 and then drove in Valentin with a hit up the middle on a high fastball at 2:07:24. Both were important parts of this team with Valentin giving them another legitimate power hitter at second base.
At 18:44, Green was also a solid replacement for Floyd. Oddly, Green had been one of the great power hitters, particularly in 2001, but lost his power overnight between 2002 and 2003. His home runs turned into doubles while he otherwise remained identical.

At 2:33:30, Wagner threw a 100 mph fastball to Biggio who was understandably late and fouled it off. Wagner also threw four 99 mph fastballs to Berkman, including 3 in a row at 2:36:36, 2:37:01, and 2:37:25, all fouled off. But he had his sharp slider as well. Watch Berkman swing right over the top of an 89 mph slider and lose his bat at 2:34:47. Wagner came right in and tied up Quintero with a slider at 2:28:12 and threw a 98 mph fastball below the knees to Bruntlett at 2:30:00. Wagner just dominated Taveras at 2:31:15 starting with the 98 mph fastball right by him up and away, but Taveras missed the 97 mph fastball on the bunt attempt at 2:31:35 and then struck out chasing a slider in the dirt at 2:32:30.
At 1:52:02, Mota and Gagne were an incredible duo back when Gagne was the most dominant closer ever, particularly in 2003 when Mota also had an ERA below 2 in more than 100 innings. A huge pickup down the stretch to be able to get him for basically nothing as Cohen put it and a powerful combination with Wagner in the bullpen. Mota could consistently throw 96-97 mph as he did in this game, but it was the fastball/changeup combination that made him so tough when he was on. After everything to Taveras was a 95-96 mph fastball, Biggio was way out in front on the 86 mph changeup at 1:53:46. Biggio's timing was still way off on a 3rd straight changeup at 1:54:44 and Mota struck him out with a 4th straight changeup at 1:55:17. Mota came right at Lane who fouled off the 86 mph changeup weakly at 1:58:07 and was late on the 97 mph fastball and popped out to Delgado in foul territory at 1:58:38.
Game 1 of the NLCS showed a successful formula for the 2006 Mets and how good their pitching could be between Glavine, Mota, and Wagner.
