Starters are a touchy subject to talk about because there are so many reasons to like them. Design, general concept and inspiration, nostalgia, the anime ect. This could create what most would see as inconsistency and I completely understand that but I personally think there are so many reasons to like these guys that they can get into the same tier for completely different reasons altogether.
This tier list was all over the place. The anime would sway some opinions even though it shouldn't have and the reasoning for ranking some pokemon wasnt used throughout. An example was Froakie being ranked S tier. A big reason for that is Greninja, but then Charmander had Charizard held against him for that same reason. Yall gotta stay consistent when doing these rankings, if not what's the point?
Agreed. Although I really enjoyed this episode, they still did switch between "gets carried/brought down because of *insert evo*", like for example Greninja brings up Froakie, and for others like Squirtle and Torchic the evos get brought up and mentioned, but atleast it effects the tier minimally.
I feel like it's justified for the anime to sway some opinions. It is an experience with the Pokemon. Oshawott and Snivy were pretty fine for me but they became A and S tier worthy because of their anime appearance. I think that heavily influence on how you feel about the Pokemon should count.

The consistency is a little crazy. Keep in mind that C tier is meant to represent average, and S is meant to be completely flawless. Like you ranked Fuecoco high because of its variety in concepts, but rank Chimchar even higher with its far less conceptual representation. It felt like it was ranked so high because of nostalgia. It feels like the way you are ranking them are 0/5 - 5/5 instead of D-S.

Absolutely love these podcasts. They're always so funny. You guys also have to do a legendary / mythical Pokemon tier list sometime in the future as well. I also completely agree with Infamous! The CHIMCHAR line will always be number 1.
You held Charizard against Charmander but not Greninja against Froakie? Froakie was the least popular until the final forms were revealed. It still is not a really popular first evo. All other 4 had their marketable moments but froakie didn't. I hate piplup but it deserves to be the last member of S tier instead of froakie as it was extremely popular
@Omi.FiveEleven They said that, but I agree with this guy that it 100% did influence their decision on Froakie. Nobody wanted to play as Froakie until they saw Greninja, especially in the servers & social groups I was apart of at the time.
Mudkip is an S not becuase of the meme I'm a Wooper fan I like the dumb faces and its strong and can crush boulders. Also Brock had one and I read the Manga too Ruby also had one it's great and adorable.
PS. I like Amphibians too and Reptiles. Also sorry but Oshawott and Chespind are D tier the Anime did nothing for me expect try hard for me to like them. The same for piplup but c tier. Also Sobble is c tier it reminds me of a crying baby on a plane except worse cuase it can make me cry to and crying hurts the eyes and makes you fatigue. Also if I want a hard happy smile to earn that's what a cat is for. Also making Mudkip smile is funny.
I know I'm gonna be crucified,but here is my list. Warning! Very, biased! S tier : Chimchar, Charmander, Rowlett, Piplup. A tier : Bulbasaur, Tepig, Litten, Mudkip, Turtwig, Froakie. B tier : Snivy, Treecko, Oshawott, Cyndaquil, Sobble, Torchic. C tier : Squirtle, Scorbunny, Fennekin, Chikorita, Chespin, Totodile. D tier : Grookey, Popplio. No F tier, because even the last two I don't hate, they are just my least favorite. Overall the first stage starters are usually pretty good. I don't feel confortable ranking Gen 9 starters right now, but at this moment I think all three are around B tier, Fuecoco is my favorite.

To me, for base starters the anime is second only to the design in terms of determining how good it is, and the anime gives Chimchar arguably the greatest Arc of any pokemon in the anime period, so it's no surprise they ranked it high. Sole D tier, or even F tier belongs to Tepig imo.

Tepig is like a sole holder of F tier for me, but with the Sinnoh starters I think it's just that the gen 4 anime was so incredibly popular and all 3 starter families recieved a lot of love in it. The final evos are all way better imo, but it's understandable why the base are all A to me.

I don't understand why most of you are bashing on popplio so much. It's a little blue sea lion,and Pokémons are just cuter,more fictional versions of real-life animals. And popplio really gives off that vibe.
There’s definitely a “chaos” in the tier-list but I enjoy listening to the podcast. (Legit trying to catch up with every episode 🥲) Also, I love Mudkip the most because my first time playing Pokémon I legit used only the Mudkip line in emerald. (I do catch other Pokémon but to fill them in the party)

I noticed Infamous overly exaggerates a lot of things. Not sure how I feel about that. Chikorita didn't deserve that. Like yeah exaggeration for comedy, have fun but I don't see the appeal.
Plus Decidueye being based on the Grallistrix, an extinct Owl from Hawaii really makes it the best Starter conceptually for Alola (Plus the Robin Hood Inspiration too and the similarities With Green Arrow)
The only starters that deserve D Tier are Grookie and Chikorita. If you choose anything else is fine in my book. And Popplio deserves C Tier at least. I gotta say to you something tho, Turtwig is kinda too high, C Tier is the max, I personally lean more towards Chesnaught. Fennekin is a great Mon definitely A or B. Totodile C, don't hate the Mon. Same as Mudkip. And Snivy is cool, but I'd still put it in C Tier Most Grass starters got nothing on Water and Fire starters. Emboar is still really cool and is better than Infernape because it based on Zhu Bajie, another character from the Journey to the west. Wu Kong is a bit too popular with Goku being based on it. Infernape is still fine tho.
I think that also a lot of older starters are laughable in terms of design complexity and inspirations compared to newer starters. (even tho the Mons themselves look good) I admit that I Wouldn't have cared too much for Thyplosion if Hisuian Thyplosion wasn't a thing

Litten is the best and not because of the anime and I love what they did with Litten in it but I already loved it and it’s evolutions waaaay before that and they were already my favorites and thank you hybrid for agreeing with me on my baby kitten and also why did no one mention the anime for Litten.
Torchic is better than blaziken. Blaziken doesn't even look like a chicken. There is no reason for it to be a fighting type(except the fact that it looks like a human,sshhh... I have seen cock fighting this is not it) The only reason it's not hated like emboar is coz 1)it's from a Gameboy 2)it's designed to look cool(on your face)
Incredibly wrong. Blaziken was specifically designed to be ugly according to Ken Sugimori, but people liked it anyway. The fact that it doesn't look like a chicken is part of the appeal, since the whole point of Pokemon is that they're fantastical beasts, in Blaziken's case, it was designed after fighting chickens, so naturally it has the form of a martial artist.

Incredibly wrong. Blaziken was specifically designed to be ugly according to Ken Sugimori, but people liked it anyway. The fact that it doesn't look like a chicken is part of the appeal, since the whole point of Pokemon is that they're fantastical beasts, in Blaziken's case, it was designed after fighting chickens, so naturally it has the form of a martial artist.
