T. Laz's gimmick is a straight downside. Whereas other characters get positives and negative traits to create an interesting balance tradeoff, Lazarus is just a straight downside. There is no positive to having to split items and hp between two alternating characters, you literally just have to hope you get something really good on both of them. So you need twice the luck of a regular run, otherwise you're only good enough every other room. There's no skill involved with it to actually finesse a victory, it's literally just about needing to get more good items than average because what's good enough to win you a regular run is only good enough to win you half of it as Tainted Lazarus. With J&E, you at least get to use the benefits of the items you split between your characters simultaneously. Here it's just 'Oh you got a damage up? Enjoy only benefitting from it on 50% of the rooms', and then 'Oh you found a second damage up? Enjoy having to decide between being mediocre on every room or being good on half and miserable on the other'. There's no payoff to his gimmick, it's a straight downside that makes you pray for good rng.

NL, Tainted Lazarus is apparently getting a major rework so you may want to wait to play him until after that. Especially since you will probably end up trying him anyways if his gimmick changes enough.

Who would know the right tone more than the author themself? A reader would have their interpretation, authors know why and what they were writing when they wrote it

I highly recommend checking something that Michael Kramer has read for Brandon Sanderson. If an author has worked with the voice actor for a long time, they know how to instigate the tone. I am by no means saying there are some horrendous audiobook reads. That said selfhelp books are usually read by the author or someone else in the field that has been a public speaker and reads it in the right tone.
