Started at 9 when I discovered the web dev tools and learned html just by looking at it and changing stuff. Got attached to it and continued to learn the 3 core web languages (js, css, html). Started to go to extra-curricular activities at my school, chose robotics (microcontroller programming) and chess. Learned C# for unity GameDev with Brackeys. Now, 16, taking harvard's CS50X and CS50W at the same time. I really feel like CS/SE is my element! Reeaaally happy that I discovered it :D!!

Something I read recently: If your employer puts you on a performance improvement program, start looking for a different job immediately. Usually they do that so they can terminate you due to low performance (don't know the legal term), which makes you ineligible for unemployment benefits. In the US at least, the amount a company has to pay towards unemployment insurance is determined by how many of their ex-employees are on unemployment; so a company has a clear goal of documenting any "low performance", if they wish to let you go.

How was starting with C++? I started from the stark opposite, Python. I’m about to start my CS degree. I’ll probably do Java because that to be what most classes focus on.

    • @dantedt3931
      @dantedt3931 2 года назад +4

I started with C++, when i was doing a degree in Applied Maths,it helped me to understand the inner workings of programming.
Learning Python later on was easier and i use it everyday with the Django framework to build web applications.
Java is a great language too, plus it has Spring Boot, a framework to build applications.
I’d say go with Java, it’s low enough to understand essential programming concepts.
All the best with the CS Degree.

First video from your channel I watch, and cool! I will complete 4 years coding in A couple months, and I love it! I’m not the greatest, my memory sucks, but I work hard!! In less than 4 years I went from being on the tools, subcontracting painting jobs, to having my own business with around 10 employees, all thanks to coding to be honest. I do my own web dev, SEO, sales, my business is automated, and it’s about to start running on its own CRM, customized. I will have more free time to eventually get good at the back end and improve at the front end too, plus my English is getting better!!. I keep coding for fun and to be ready for business ideas, …I just see opportunities at this thing , I am just not that good at coding , but there is so much money to be made!! Not necessary working for others,…cool stuff , I will follow your videos.

I'm so stuck now. I thought SW was the path I wanted to take. Took a few programming classes at my state college, did pretty well. I just don't know why I don't feel any interest in it anymore. Even if I can finish the last 2 years of schooling, I feel like getting a job, practicing for an interview, only to get a job that is something I'm not sure is even right for me is the right choice to make. I never really had any passions, so I picked this field for the money and career opportunities. I did more research into the field and tbh it does seem a bit depressing and probably has a high burn out rate. Working remote has pros, but always being alone in the house is already tough. Im taking online classes and I'm sick of being in my damn room cooped up. The issue is I don't have a backup plan either. Getting this CS degree is the quickest path to being done with school as I already have more than half the needed credits.

    • @nicklitz8046

Don't limit yourself to the career path of, "If I have a CS degree, I will have to be a SWE." SWE's transition to A LOT of roles outside of strictly writing code (which any SWE will probably tell you is less of their time than you'd think). Are you interested in people leading, product management, program management, user experience (UX/UI, human design), solutions consultant (wearing tons of hats but usually have a CS background or strength), etc. My point is. Having a CS degree has more benefits than simply, "I know how to write code." CS backgrounds are strong problem solvers, critical thinkers, generally pretty damn smart, creative, etc. There is a LOT of value in what you're learning that is not limited to software for any domain. You're also learning right now and that can, quite frankly, become very boring, especially at a university. I found the boot camp to be much more interactive and fun. I have an MIS degree and went to an online boot camp so I can absolutely relate for being locked up in your house for 6 months straight - at times it was daunting but it's been the best thing I ever did and has opened up doors I didn't know existed. That's personal - everyone has a different experience and outcome. That all said - follow your gut. If you REALLY aren't enjoying it - it's only going to get worse. In this field you are constantly learning and educating yourself - that never stops. So if you don't like that now - just know it never ends. Always new tech and versioning to deal with. Good luck but either way finish out that degree!

Remember what let you being passionate about programming. For me, is the beauty of automation and abstraction. When I feel me down, I try to remember a phrase coming from a neuroscientist called Andrew Huberman. "If you are feeling walking down the wrong path, and you are feeling disoriented, means that you are going towards the right way for learning." because learning itself is hard and depressing, but on the other side is fun and rewarding. I give you my advice. When you have 10 minutes break, take a walk. Go out. See your friends when you can. All of this experience is living in your head, so you are the only one who can change this to a positive experience. Keep up dude! It's temporany, won't last forever!

@@nicklitz8046 I agree. He can pivot into cybersecurity and become a cybersecurity analyst/engineer, GRC, compliance analyst, IT auditor, digital forensic analyst/examiner or get into cloud computing. You don't just have to be a SWE. There are so many options.

Hi, and now we have THE MOST SEROIUS question, after all i've just seen.... so
CAN we consider ourselfs as a developer after flash html\css crash course, then 3 months + with JS, and 2 months + React\Vue whatever ?? Who are we? The objects of good joykes? start ups? money spinners?
This guy just said that he finished college and he wanted it!
I think for those guys, who are about to jump on this "train" in a year, or 15 months it's gonna be the biggest diss..
Personaly, i'm drilling JS for about 3 months not because i understood that this is so amazing to help people( oh yea, bet companies, best winners ;), but i just literally don't have another option. There is a war in my country, not just rallies or smth but a f7cking war. and every night befor go to bed i have debates whether im on a righ way .. to hell or right choise, this is the most tremendous question of my life.

Wow. There's no way someone got a computer related degree and can't use the commandline. Whatever school they came from should lose their accreditation for letting them pass. That's completely insane.

Sam, I think you did a video on your channel or someone else's channel where you solve the "count the planes in the air" programming challenge. I don't know if it was a mock interview or not. Were you involved in a video like I am describing? I can't find it at all. It makes me wonder if I am even remembering correctly or not?

I admire your determination and handwork...unfortunately?..I'm not financially able to go to school....plus..me being 50 is a no brainer that it would cut into my time studying and trying to land a gig. So I only have either boot camps...which is ALSO not financially do-able...or else its self learning with Udemy or edX....along with RUclips..here's ho[ping! LoL!

This is super cool of you to share. And you're absolutely right, its the journey that forges us to be the people we wanna be, the end goal is just a milestone to count.

finishing my masters this summer, tbh it feels like it would have been better to do a react bootcamp my 1st year instead
