In the UK, no-one is expected to ask someone to call other people to cover them if they are ill. People in some industries might swap shifts if they want a different day off, but it is a manager’s job to MANAGE this stuff.
This must be an American thing... I'm long retired, and over my 50+ years of employment, I was never asked to find my own sick-replacement. My last job there was just an automated sick reporting line, that you had to call at least an hour before your shift and leave a message. Coverage was handled by team leads. Of course, I also had unlimited sick time...3 months paid by the company health insurance, and any time after that was paid at 75% from government unemployment benefits. As long as I had provided doctor's note once a month, I continued getting paid. (it is amazing what private insurance can provide, when your taxes handles the cost of your health care). Plus, at my time of retirement I was up to 8 weeks paid vacation, along with the 14 days of stat-holidays each year. Seems like the USA just never got over slavery completely. I once worked for a Finland based company (Go Suomi!) and along with standard mandated Canadian time off (minimum 2 weeks per year) and sick benefits, they also closed for 3 weeks each Christmas. Work to live, never live to work! America has it so ass-backwards.
Yup. Welcome to nursing. "Shank you health care heros!" Gag.
Underlings dont train bosses!!!!
Hmm. I have also threatened to disconnect a customer and done so. Have a nice day.
