    Linear regulators dissipate power depending on current draw as well as voltage drop. So if your device consumed 1mA, then the 5V regulator, supplied by a 12V battery will be dissipating 7mW.
    Milliwatts, folks. Sure it's more than the 5mW of the device but it's not an inferno!
    A switchmode power supply may infeed be less efficient at such low current and make significant electrical noise.
