      Hello. I'm trying to start this as a hobby. I have my great grandmother's 10" skillet. One of the first things she bought when she came to America. Could you tell me what kind of power source you are using. Hope all is well with you and thank you.

      @@willpatterson4866 in a video he uses a DC power supply. Do a deep dive on his videos there was a link to one he bought on Amazon. They do a great job. His early videos on setting up an E-tank are well worth a look. Very simple to do. Great results. Epitome of working smarter not harder. guy named Mudbroker on youtube also does great videos on cleaning. Watch about setting up a lye tank if you haven't already.

    Let me clarify how I recharged my tractor battery. I would disconnect the jumper cables from battery and my skillet before I hooked it to automatic charger. When charged, I would reconnect jumper cables to both battery and skillet after disconnecting battery from charger. I agree with Mr. Larry Stephens, I did not use battery while it was hooked to charger for the reason he stated. The risk IS NOT worth it. The point of my previous comment was that I used a battery to supply power to a tank because I couldn't find a manual battery charger. And I didn't know another electrical power supply that I could find and use. That is why I was so happy that Steven did this video; he showed me a product that would supply continuous and known amperage. Again, I thank him for doing this video and look forward to seeing other videos in the future.

    I can't tell you how happy that you did this video. I can't find a old manual battery charger in North Louisiana either and had to invent another power supply. Being a country boy, I "borrowed" deep cycle battery from my 1986 Ford tractor and used 12 gauage jumper cables to connect battery to cookware. Works fine; I recharge battery every 12-14 hours with automatic charger. Biggest drawback is that I didn't know what amperage was being sent to my tank. Now that I know where to purchase an alternative electrical power supply and won't have to worry about recharging battery or unknown amperage. This is my first attempt at making comment on anybody's site so I hope it goes through. I really enjoy your channel as well as your presentation and knowledge. Also thank you for responding to an email question that I sent you several weeks ago; I think a great number of people in your position wouldn't have responded to a novice like myself. Your response also including a personal note concerning my 90 year old Daddy being in the hospital for nearly 2 months; I really thank you for your concern. God bless you and your family too.

    I metal detect as another hobby and "electrolosize", as I say, a lot of items using a manual battery charger and they eventually died. Even small items can take a very long time depending on how bad the rust is. I made mine from a plastic tote, rebar or a brake rotor and a hanger to run the charge to the rusted piece. Worked like a charm. When I was reading about building a tank there were several articles that said not to use stainless steel. As far as the compound you need to use Arm and Hammer washing soda (sodium carbonate) and not baking soda (sodium bi-carbonate). Happy hunting....

    I can say one thing you must have convinced a lot of people on your RUclips channel to buy one of these power supplies and leads. Both of the ones that you have listed are not available they are sold out.
    I'm glad you said something about the fan. When you first started the box it sounded pretty loud and normally that's an indication of something not me very well. But after the test you put that box through proves that it's a pretty good built supplier.
    I've never have tried this out yet but come this fall I'm going to have a project going on in the garage. I'm finally going to pull the motor out of my pickup truck and over the winter rebuild it and have it ready for the spring. I'm not crazy about using battery chargers like others have. I like the idea of what you stated at the beginning of this video. You want to be able to control the amperage and voltage going to your parts.
    I rarely enjoyed your video and I definitely made sure to hit the like and subscribe button. I figured that's the least I can do for someone sharing some good information.

PSU not getting hot. I've sat an additional fan on top the PSU as a precaution. All is good so far and tank looks like it's removing a lot of crud! 😉

    Thanks for showing this! I have been looking for a non-automatic battery charger and had no luck. A DC power supply seems like the answer.
    Also I've read about using stainless steel for the sacrificial anode in electrolyis and warnings about creating highly toxic by-products. They said that if your electrolyte is turning yellow, it is a sign that you are producing hexavalent chromium which is very toxic and carcinogenic. But then another source said it is doubtful that will happen at low voltage. An issue worth researching.

    I have been speculating for a while that this would work, and you have proven it. I am fortunate to have 3 big upright 2/10/40/200 amp manual battery chargers, one still new in the box! Your stainless tank appears to be very conductive to support that percentage of current as compared to the output setting on the power supply. My stainless plates are not as conductive, but they still work. Just a little slower. I only register 2 or 3 amps on the meter when I set the charger to 10 amps. As for the #14 pan and its sad condition, it should still work well for pizza! I don't know that I have ever seen a Red Mountain #14. I only see Century #14s.

    I was reading a post on a group site and someone said how good your videos were. I’m a newbie and have been bitten by a big cast iron bug. I am so eager to learn all things about cast iron. Funny thing is I’m trying to make a e-tank and had the problem of finding a battery charger. Someone on the site suggest Schumacher SM 1437 from Blains. I researched it and they have the best price. It’s a manual 6/25/125 amp and also has a timer on it for a couple of hours. I’m guessing this will be ok. I know nothing about doing this. I’ll look for a video on building a tank and see if I can find out what amperage I need to use.
    I’m so glad I found your videos. Thanks for putting them out there and teaching us what you have learned. I needed to find someone who had information and didn’t mind sharing it. I enjoyed the video on DC power. Thank you.

      Ah yes, such a blessing. Here are some more WONDERFUL nuggets of wisdom from your supposed creator of the universe: "For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me." (Matthew 10:35-27)
      So much for the whole family values thing, eh, and the mutual support of your kin?

    • @Josieundergrace
      @Josieundergrace 3 года назад +1

      What Jesus said and you quoted here is true though. When God shows you the Truth and you receive it, naturally you would be separated spiritually from who doesn't believe in Jesus (this is the work of Holy Spirit), and it can happen within family members as you specifically pointed out in this comment. However, perhaps think of this from this angle: you want to follow the faith that will cost you something, if not, it is just another "staff" you believe/possess for a while and throw it away when it doesn't fit to your circumstance. In other word, game it, not just watch it. Jesus said in John 16:33 "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.". As a believer and a follower, we know there will be troubles due to our faith in Christ, and often time we need to confront with it by speaking truth in love.
      May God open your eyes of understanding, my friend. You'd be blessed hundred folds more if you know who He truly is and accept Him as your Savior. God bless!

    You can use your adjustable DC power supply as a battery charger too, first turn down the current all the way and go up to about 10% current, then set the voltage to the maximum charge voltage (~14.1V for starter battery, 4.2V for a 1S lipo cell, etc), then hook it to the battery, see the voltage indeed drops, then turn up the current to whatever you want (constant current mode), it will eventually land on the voltage you set and stop the current when it reaches the voltage you set because it would be in constant voltage mode. Do not touch the voltage knobs after you initially set it!!! This is why battery chargers exist, because people "accidentally" or really stupidly bump or touch the voltage knobs after setting the end voltage, to prevent stupid they make battery chargers so you cannot accidentally change the end voltage.

    Great video Sir. I'm a retired Marine in search of new hobbies and restoring old cast iron cookware is high on my list. I made an electrolysis tank out of a tote to see if it would work but sourcing and installing multiple anodes became a frustration. The idea of using a stainless steel kettle is intriguing as it would enable 360 degree coverage of the artifact and eliminate multiple wires/connection (failure) points. This seems effective and efficient in terms of achieving good rust removing results. My only hesitation is that many people suggest that a stainless steel tank will increase the chance of producing toxic fumes which is an obvious concern. Having said that you seem healthy and unaffected using your method. Please advise if you're still using this method or if you have switched to something else. God bless and Semper Fi, Ken

    So what I find odd is why only 6 volts with 9.97 amps? That supply is usually CC or CV in operation which is Constant Current or Constant Voltage I wonder what would have happened if you started with the voltage wide open with the current low and once you saw the CV light on start raising the current to see if you can get it at 30 volts @ 9.97 Amps and see if it affects the electrolysis action any differently. Also what do you use as your electrolyte, Baking soda, or Washing soda or 50/50 vinegar & water with Salt mixture. The Stainless steel pot is Genius, good video.

    • @tiggywinkle1000
      @tiggywinkle1000 2 года назад

      Will definitely work - and they push out quite a hefty current at 5V - and it's the current that does the work; there's only a small PD across the piece you're working on anyway.
      I built my supply for nothing from scrap lying around in the workshop - it uses an old PC PSU fan for cooling, but it is analogue PSU, not switch mode like a PC PSU.
      Mine gives about 12 Amps continuous and left on working for a while actually heats up the 25 gallon tank of washing soda solution ! Fitted an MCB off an old mains distribution board to stop problems if the terminals went together by mistake.

    Thank you for the useful Cast Iron information, your great channel, and all of the effort you put into it. I appreciate it.
    Aside from skillets, I also like to restore my waffle irons, muffin pans, etc., which for now I scrub with short nylon bristled brushes after back and forth lye-baths and Evaporust-baths as needed, a system that is not only slow but is both tedious and laborious (just like this sentence).
    Anyway, E-tanks seem like the way to go. And you do make it look so easy!!
    However, I've always been a bit leery (scared to death) of using an e-tank myself on account of my complete and utter lack of electrical knowledge. You have it all detailed here pretty clearly with these components, and have described the fundamentals in prior videos and thus have armed me with some confidence.
    However, I still have a few (maybe dumb) questions.
    Can it damage or dissolve the cast iron in any way, like maybe by leaving it on for too long, or at too many amps?
    Can it adversely affect nickel or chrome plating, it seems as if it would, although I do see some commenters here saying that it does not.
    The main fear though (beside immediate death by electrocution) is : Can I damage the cast iron item in any way?
    Thanks!!!

    • @castIroncookware
      @castIroncookware  4 года назад

      The only risk of damage that I know of is if you allow the cast iron to touch the sacrificial anodes, causing an ark and possibly burn a spot on the cast iron. I have never had that to happen neither have I heard it happening.

    You won’t find a power source producing much more than 10 amps if it is wired for 120 V because most 120 V outlets have 15 amp fuses/breakers; some may have 20 amp, but that is the max.
    If you want more amps, you will have to go to a device using a 240 V outlet. The max amp draw from a “home” single phase 240 V outlet is 50 amps. Also, 50 amps from a 240 V outlet is equivalent to 100 amps from a 120 V outlet-this take home message is don’t mess around with electricity if you don’t know what you’re doing. You will literally melt your wires. And from there, things get very bad very quickly.

    Hi David, just set up my first “tank”. Bought a DC power supply, variable up to ten amps. Got my first piece in, cranked it up to ten and it started processing immediately. So much activity I got a little worried and turned it down a few notches lol. Question, how high do you think I can set the amperage without damaging a piece of cast iron cookware? I’m using the A&H wash as you suggested at ~1 cup per 5 gal water. Many thanks in advance (maybe…you’ve given me a new obsession with your videos, they are outstanding!)

      Maximum amps are mostly depended on the size of your part, your anode and the conductivity of your electrolyte (the liquid). I had the mistake of not properly mixing soda into water, and amps whent up after I did that. Then I added another anode and got more amps again.

    Stainless steel contains chromium. The electrodes, and thus the chromium is consumed, and you end up with poisonous chromates in your electrolyte.

    Stainless probably isn't a good choice for the positive electrode. Hexavalent chromium will be formed in the solution as the chromium leaches out of the stainless. This is some nasty stuff,.

    Well Sir, I sure do Have a Better Source for Power Supply Than That Overpriced Labratory Box of Bees. It's a Welding Machine! See During Electrolysis Your Voltage Really is off the chart if you measure in voltage, But it is Amperage what really gets the Marblings Sizzling. Amazon Has Welding machines that are capable of 150-200 Amps at the Maximum for 50-60$. I'd say since your old 12volt battery charger was a 40 amp you will be able to match that but it would read 1-40amps at 100% duty cycle and the remaining amps you would have to take breaks, but at 40 amps any welder will be able to do that since most rods run 50amps and up, but I do reccomend an amp meter if the unit does not have one sine some manufacturers don't use amps and use their own made up units like "power" with the rheostat dial reads from 1-4 and hopefully they explain how much amps go in each quarter, but for sure your powersupply's diodes will thank you since they will go out if you max that power supply out.
