In my opinion, she sets the standard for popular, musical theatre, and even some classical singing! She proves you can act without throwing away your voice! One of my favorite singers to this day after working with her years ago!

The Criswell/McGlinn performances and recordings from this period were seen as revelations. This song has been distorted belief in revivals, brassy and jazzy and loud. This is how it was conceived and should be done.

I have known Kim since junior high, we lived in the same neighborhood together, we went to school with each other, even saying in the high school course Together, made a amazing trip to Europe, she had an amazing voice then and amazing voice now. I wish you all the luck in the world Kim. Love you then, love you now.

Wonderful to hear these superb, gentle orchestrations. What a wonderful Broadway sound the 1930's had - before the amplified voice allowed for bigger orchestrations. Kim Criswell is stunning. How lucky Ethel Merman was to have this song as her ANYTHING GOES opener. How could you not love Reno after hearing this? I love that the song is one time through, it makes its statement, and then it fades away. The Johnny Green orchestration on the Merman recording is very similar to this one, I think.

The original 1934 Johnny Green recording is more up tempo and has a much more jazzy feeling than this, ideally suited to Merman with her great trumpet voice,. Kim is not Ethel, but then again who ever was or will ever be? She slows it down very effectively.
