OK I figured out the design. The joint actually extends beyond the pivot about a centimeter (similar to an umbrella joint) and the elastic for the next segment is attached to the end of that extension.
...Joxman2k rushes off to his Laboritory MOHAHA!!!

Does anyone know what he uses to hinge the joints?

I do not understand how flexation (straightening of fingers) happens in this design. All I see is a metal joint with a tension cable. I'm assuming that the black string is an elastic.
...Is the elastic perhaps above the joint pivot?"
I've tried many designs and used rubber bands as a flexation tool, but you need to be on the money, plus the banding loses its properties in an uneven manner.
Hands have been driving me nuts since 1982.
Can anyone help me out understanding this?
    :)
